S03E12 Retraining A Race Trotter To A Riding Horse

Training a race trotter to become a riding horse is in many ways the quintessence of retraining a badly trained riding horse. So everything you need to know for retraining a riding horse with troubles, you need to know when reschooling a trotter. It takes time, patience and knowledge, and a toolbox of methods to help the horse change its learned habits.
We show example videos of one of our horses and discuss what we see.

Glad you like it, and that it is understandable in English. We have many friends and students that are to Norwegian speakers, and Norwegians generally understand English well, so we chose to speak English. :)

This is immensely helpful, thank you! I’m in the US and we have harness racing as well; although it’s less popular. We mostly use the Standarbred breed, although there are others allowed in smaller races. I have been considering adopting an off the track Standardbred and retraining for eventing, but I’ve had a hard time finding a good source of information on retraining their gate. Thank you so, so much!!

That's interesting! We have several students who ride standardbreds, and the procedure is the same. Good luck with your training!

I soak up all of your videos like a sponge. It has made me such a better instructor, Rider, trainer. And I have been doing this for 50 years! Congratulations on your 50th video! Do you have a video that teaches the difference between lateral and unilateral half halts? I'm not very clear on them. Thank you so much for all you do! You are a joy and a gift to this world!
