This was so insensitive of Penny. She knows first hand that Leonard's mum is a cold hearted ice queen, a spiteful, selfish and all round abusive hypocrite who permanently emotionally damaged at least one of her sons through a continuous stream of neglect and emotional manipulation. Leonard's trauma at a childhood bereft of any happiness, warmth, nurture or care under a domineering, expedient parental figure is one of the saddest parts of the show that is routinely played for laughs and very, very rarely addressed for the horrendous cruelty that it is. It's a real shame Penny just doesn't care at all, and even when Leonard is revealed in the final scene of the episode for...understandably manipulating this shit-show of a situation into his favour, Penny just teams up with his mum to humiliate him further and perpetuate her horrible cycle of neglect and humiliation.

Yeah this episode still pisses me off every time I see it bc every time he asks/begs her not to read it or at least not talk to him about it she does exactly that and then acts surprised when he gets upset, as if it isn’t completely embarrassing

Penny's behavior in this scene is really off. You can clearly see how uncomfortable Leonard is with this book (who wouldn't with a mother like that?) but Penny doesn't take him seriously at all and laughs the whole time as if the whole thing is a joke instead of being empathetic and considerate towards her own boyfriend.

Yeah, but Penny is sort of a jerk. It is pretty well established that she was a mean girl, a bully, in high school. She is kind of mean to all of them, especially Howard.
