Unbeyond Anthologies welcome back label inductee S0MBRA for their debut multi-track release with us, the striking “The Darkened Path Ahead” EP.
A defining step in the producer’s artistic evolution and a showcase of their new musical ethos, “The Darkened Path Ahead” fuses atmospheric 140 with luscious jazz flourishes, making for a surreal, enthralling collection of hypnotic dancefloor shakers. All four tracks are a clear outlay of S0MBRA’s thoroughly refined skills as a musician, weaving samples with precision and attention to detail.
Opener “Loose Ground” encapsulates all of the best elements of S0MBRA’s new approach, with rich production and an effortlessly infectious groove, a trait shared by the entrancing closing title track. “Fatigue” takes things in a deeper direction, while “Late Night Visitor” taps into a more sinister atmosphere and aggressive flow.
“‘The Darkened Path Ahead’ is a major stylistic diversion for me. After a series of difficult and transformative years, I was moved to trade in the orchestral arrangements and acidic sound design of my past material for deep sub bass and dusty jazz samples. The dark, nocturnal atmosphere remains constant, but the music has been simplified and grounded, the grandiosity shot down from the sky and stripped down to core components. No distractions. It’s time to face what’s ahead.” said S0MBRA. “‘The Darkened Path Ahead’ represents the struggle through life's obstacles toward a cloudy and uncertain future. This EP is not the end result of my musical reinvention. It's just the first step, the commitment to begin a new journey.”
