Such a warm hearted and cosy, brilliantly written comedy full of fantastic dialogue a perfect blend of comedy, nostalgia, emotion, morals and character.

I have the boxset as well as as a DVD of the only film spin-off yet here I am watching it again. There were sitcoms just as great (Rising Damp, Steptoe and Son, Dad's Army, On the Buses) but The Likely Lads brings back so many memories. Even the theme song makes me happy.

Great! A savage exploration of genuine friendship challenged by class and aspiration. A serious critique of human relationships of the sort that the facile world of modern TV thinks is too trivial to dissect. Brilliant!

i consider it's due to the evaporation of the social-ist strata from tv programming, so prevalent in shows of the 60s and 70s: the good life, till death us do part, on the buses, the rag trade.

Back in the 780s when so many of our finest sitcoms were first being aired, I thought Fawlty Towers was cream of the crop, bit In now find that this, Porridge and Rising Damp are those to have aged best. All three have a warmth and heart to them not found these days, and certainly not in the plethora of by-the-numbers predictably lame US so-called comedies whose constant repeats today clog up our goggle box in such an inane, saccharine and predictable manner.

Bob may be getting married but neither can live without the other despite their contrasting fortunes.A truly great series made possible by a still unrivalled writing duo and two actors who fitted the roles to perfection. The only drawback is the awful background music in the restaurant which grates.

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view!" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
