bbc drama generally was. sitcoms and dramas like this didn't have much of a budget, so they needed to have a strong depth of writing.

Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, the writers, wrote a similar episode in Porridge. A simple night in. Brilliant. No scene changes just dialogue. Hilarious.

What does it mean when a Brit ends a sentence with: "this, though, but"? As in: "Canny little place, this, though, but."
@eatmywords
@eatmywords 2 жыл бұрын
just atrocious grammar mate. translated: "this is a fine establishment, however..." the use of the conjunction "though" is unnecessary, and is probably just slang northern dialect. ending the sentence with the conjunction "but" is more dramatic irony; allows you to interpret the negativity without actually stating it.

@@eatmywords Atrocious grammar? What are you, an English teacher? So what, all parts of the UK have their own way of saying things. Different phrases and meanings. Like where I live in the NE of Scotland can have different sayings to say the North of Scotland. Geordies will say things differently to Londoners. I suppose you speak the Queen's English all the time do you?

Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
