Yes! Titokowaru was a total legend! Pity about the way that ended. "I Shall Not Die!" James Belich was one of my lecturers at Auckland Uni when I studied this. One of my essays was about Titokowaru. When he was finally captured and put on trial by a British Judge, under British law, he was acquitted on all counts. That means that under British law, the behaviour of the colonial government was so bad that the Maori were legally entitled to go to war with them. After that acquittal, the trials were stopped, and the colonial government simply enacted legislation declaring the other two leaders to be outlaws. At the first serious battle at Te Ngutu O Te Manu, the Beak of the Bird Pa, Titokowaru's forces absolutely spanked a government force that outnumbered them something like 10 to 1. And I mean spanked. The attack was obliterated, and the Maori chased the government forces back to their own home base. I think it was sometime after this that Governor Bowen announced a reward of a thousand pounds, for Titokowaru, dead or alive. Titokowaru immediately responded by having sheets printed up and pasted in towns around the area offering a reward of one pig for the head of the Governor!

Atrocities did not happen on both sides. Lake Kopuera, Rangiaowhia, Parihaka. What happened in these places was savage. This is not a 50/50 story mate. Go and watch the RNZ NZ wars series, Vincent O’Malley breaks down the sources he’s built his interpretation on, they are extremely, strong first hand accounts of things that really happened, from the perspective of other Europeans. This is not a 50/50 story, review our history please my brother. Much love though ❤️

I sense a lot of emotion in the RNZ reporters voice when talking about Europeans setting up quarries and sewerage treatment plants on Sacred Maori land. While that can be interpreted as disrespectful by the Pakeha, I would ask her where would we be without quarries, sewerage treatment and other innovative activities of the modern era? She is a direct beneficiary from all of this hard fought toil yet looks down her govt funded nose at all the people who lay the ground work of modern society. This is why I lament the emotional take-over of government funded media and institutions in NZ by people with an axe to grind.

@@pube66 Maybe it was the only suitable place, or maybe they were being disrespectful, who knows. The problem that I have is that the miracles of the modern age are always dismissed by these modern woke left types. They paint a harmonious picture of life pre colonisation and blame Europeans for everything bad that happens all the while using every piece of modern technology in their day to day life. If they spent one day in the Stone Age, these RNZ reporters would be begging for some of the comforts that colonisation brings, yet they never acknowledge this. Are you truly comfortable with the idea of disregarding the sanctity of ancestral burial sites simply for the convenience of disposing you shit? Is this disregard for cultural heritage merely a tool for promoting your racist agenda, showcasing a concerning level of ignorance? It is quite ironic that you claim I am not the colonizer, yet your actions and attitudes suggest otherwise.

Maori are no better than any other race, 19th century Maori had their share of xenophobic racists just like any other group. It is popular now to portray Maori warriors as heroic, honourable freedom fighters protecting their land, and some were but many were out right racists conducting a campaign of ethnic cleansing and that should be remembered.
