Jack is not a 'wimp'. He is educated and professional. Jack is respecting 'Wahine' whilst asking questions that everyone would like to ask, to understand both 'Maori', this huge Hikoi that took place and the Haka in parliment. What does a 'Soft' or 'Harsh' approach have to do with asking questions with reference to these huge significant events that have just happening and with the proposed changes to the 'Treaty'. Seymour was challenged when being interviewed because it is Seymour and the team making changes to the 'Treaty' - The hikoi are not people who just walked out for no reason, thousands of people are feeling the same.

As Maori we determine our own rights which may differ from from place to place and tribe to tribe etc. If I'm a Maori from say Wellington and I am in Auckland and want to fish I have to seek permission from the local tribe. @7:25 I'm yet to hear any real tangible way that we exist with '2 sovereign nations' inside NZ. Do we draw a line down the middle like the Korean peninsula? How does one determine whose laws they follow? If someone actually has answers to these sorts of questions, I would like to hear your ideas and perspectives. I understand that the honoring of the treaty was far from perfect, but we cannot simply 'undo' past wrongdoings as some may suggest. We need to look to the future. So my question is, what will nz look like in 100, 200, 500 more years? Honoring a treaty signed by a collection of chiefs, with an empire that lost power over centuries earlier, of neither who could have predicted the changes to the society... just seems a bit 'silly' for lack of a better word... I feel like we need this treaty principles bill in some form (not necessarily exactly the principles presented) to make it more consistent with the day to day lives of people who live in a modern integrated society of which BOTH parties centuries early never could have predicted. Why dont the Iwi leaders of today (not the maori party) get together and have a discussion with 'the crown' (whoever that even means??) and discuss the principles.

She speaks as if there is an Homogeneous group identifiable as Maori within NZ. She talks as if the people she represents - the 2.6% - are one issue kiwis. The greatest sin of all is that she exploits the myth of Maoridom - that anyone who agrees with her is a Maori and anyone who disagrees with her is WRONG. As a komatua, I DO NOT accept any of that. What I do accept is that Seymour is an opportunistic piece of garbage who has seized the day with a weak and ineffective PM (whose lips move in time with the latest self-help trash that he's reading) and is happy to bully him because he knows that Luxon is too weak and too craven and too hungry for the "baubles of office"to oppose him. The Treaty is. The Treaty stands. The Treaty is alive. However, it's not a piece of waste that can be picked up and used for political ends. For my money, The Maori Party is as bad as Seymour. Their posturing is for their own greedy political ends - it has nothing to do with right and wrong. And no amount of double speak by Ngarewa Packer or her ilk - no amount of redefining alternative facts as she does - will change any of that.

If we don’t address these historical injustices, we risk repeating the same harmful cycle.

In New Zealand, the Treaty of Waitangi, signed in 1840, established agreements between the Crown and Māori tribes, guaranteeing Māori rights to their lands and resources. However, historical breaches of the Treaty saw the Crown unjustly confiscate vast areas of Māori land, leading to significant socio-economic disadvantages. Today, these injustices are reflected in disparities in health, education, and employment opportunities for Māori compared to other New Zealanders. Efforts to address these inequities include targeted initiatives and policies aimed at improving outcomes for Māori, alongside ongoing Treaty settlements to acknowledge and redress past grievances.

Existence here, when my comment is read is good faith, refers to the Treaty principles being altered long after the ink on the compact is dry. Despite the obvious socioeconomic status of the group in general, educational outcomes, jobs, whatever you'd like me to cite to reinforce my "ridiculous" and "absurd" argument. Statistics are never mendacious, but mendacious people can make them say whatever they like. When judged fairly, it should be obvious that Maori do not have too many rights in this country. Ultimately, all New Zealanders should fear and question Atlas's intercession into our democracy, and consider exactly what they want to accomplish by sowing all of this division. I foresee a future where New Zealand is sold off piecemeal to corporate interests, and a US-style healthcare system is implemented off the back of depriving one's fellow man of the scintilla of pride and authority they wield. And the worst of us will of course say "Well, we lost everything that made us New Zealanders, but at least no Maori flew higher than a Pakeha." We should resist this outcome with all of our might. Who wants to disagree with this? Principle 1. The Government of New Zealand has full power to govern, and Parliament has full power to make laws. They do so in the best interests of everyone, and in accordance with the rule of law and the maintenance of a free and democratic society. Principle 2: Rights of Hapū and Iwi Māori The Crown recognises, and will respect and protect, the rights that hapū and iwi Māori had under the Treaty of Waitangi at the time they signed it. If those rights differ from the rights of everyone, it will only be when agreed in the settlement of a historical treaty claim under the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975. Principle 3: Right to Equality Everyone is equal before the law and is entitled to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination. Everyone is entitled to the equal enjoyment of the same fundamental human rights without discrimination.

The principles outlined in the Treaty of Waitangi could marginalize Māori needs by focusing on broad, general policies that prioritize the interests of the majority, which may overlook the unique cultural, historical, and socio-economic needs of Māori. The principle of “best interests of everyone” could dilute specific Māori concerns, while the conditional recognition of rights based on settled Treaty claims excludes iwi or hapū without settlements. Additionally, the focus on formal equality in Principle 3 could prevent targeted support for Māori, ignoring historical inequities and undermining Māori self-determination (tino rangatiratanga). Without clear integration of Treaty obligations, policies might fail to fully protect Māori rights or prioritize their distinct needs.

I live in Canada so we have a very similar setup. The Maori are being asked to make concessions and changes and perhaps removing the crown part would be a mutual concession on the part of the Pakeha and all other non-Maori people. Just a suggestion, because the Maori may be getting frustrated at being asked to step into more modern times yet on the other foot the crown stays which is also outdated. Very often in negotiations both sides need to give something to get something in a quid-pro-quo relationship. If both put a forward together into 2025 removing dual legacy items that may really help. Does it really matter if the King is no longer the head of state in NZ? Here in Canada it would not change much to be honest and I am sure its the same in Australia and New Zealand.

Just as an adjunct to my earlier comment that the Maori Party exploits the myth of Maoridom, I add this: The Treaty was signed on behalf of the Crown by one principal (there were more than one signatory for the Crown but the signatures were in effect one) and 504 Maori Chiefs. There was no Maori race that was represented by one entity like the Crown was. Each tribe had it's view and some chose not to sign. That tribalism still remains. The head of Tainui is NOT my Queen. She is a product of a group set up by Maniapoto in the 1860's to try to amalgamate the voice of Maori in what was called the Tainui Confederation of Tribes". It didn't work then and it's not working now. Packer is like the rest of New Zealanders - she has many parts to her whakapapa and a representative of Maoridom is not one of them. Maybe read up on King Tawhiao and his attempts to unify Maori iwi and hapu to reduce the brutal ethnic cleaning and massacre of Maori as well as the illegal land stealing. Maori traditionally do not do the ‘King’ type of social organising. The English saw this opportunity to exploit and take advantage of the ‘divide and conquer’ and illegal assertion of a non elected representative, meant that they could reduce hundreds of thousands of hectares to be owned by a few people, that they would give a few blankets and muskets and voila, they own land that had been occupied, farmed, used and ancestors buried in for hundreds of years, stolen. The Kingatitanga movement is a unifying voice to reduce the barbarism, illegal, violent and cruel actions of the crown. Tools like you, only benefited the crown. And still so. 3000 attendees from all iwi and political organisations attended the hui this year. All except NZ First and ACT. They were invited but said they were busy. How convenient. Luxon also didn’t attend. He met privately in January though. So in summary, the kingitanga movement is what was organised to protect Maori from exploitation due to the isolation and de centralised governance of maori and the exploitative actions of the crown who used their ‘king’ authoritarian structure to commit their acts of crime and violence and have their actions defended by their ‘king’. That’s all it is. All iwi attended the hui this year by the way. And to confirm, 90% of Maori support the kingitanga movement and why they exist. Your lame attempt to say that they don’t support the movement, by saying that certain Maori don’t accept the king as their king, or queen as their queen, is an ignorant and silly statement. 100% of Maori don’t accept anyone as their king or queen. They don’t function like that. No one requires that from the kingitanga movement. To say that the way Maori perceive kings or queens, in some way minimises their support for the kingitanga movement that seeks to unify the Maori voice in order to reduce harm to Maori, is reflective of your understanding on this topic.

Be clear Debbie, you are forming arguments that don’t exist under the treaty principles Bill. You are lying to Māori and fear mongering to your own ends and are not sharing what this bill actually means to Māori. 90% of people on the hikoi had no idea what they were actually marching for or against. They had no idea what the treaty principles bill actually said or stands for. Be truthful to your people.

@Davidseymour is either intentionally or mistakenly using the Equal rights for All New Zealanders arguement to effectively change/nullify Tino Rangatira Status i.e. Te Tiriti O Waitangi(Legal Contract) between the Crown and Iwi Hapu (Tangata Whenua). Equal Rights for all New Zealanders (Every NZ citizen) are already protected by Law under the Humans Right Act 1993 and The NZ Bill of Rights Act 1990. They are two separate things which the Courts (Independently) Have already ruled on. Its confusing or misleading everyone that they are the same things. If he wants to effectively change Tino Rangtiratanga status now, that will need to be signed by Iwi and the crown, not the Government

I understood some of what she was saying but using Te Reo buzzwords to avoid clearly answering questions was not helpful. I guess if you know the majority won't understand what you are saying, and will be too afraid to ask what does "pono and tika" mean, then you can get away with it, sounds fishy to me. They both mean true and correct. So that does in no way answers the question.
