S1 - Ep 171 - Steytlerville - A Beautiful Town in the Eastern Cape!

The rock formations we saw as we were driving through Pienaarspoort and at Draaikraans on our way to Steytlerville was something out of this world and something we had never seen before. It was wonderful to have had the privilege to experience that. Driving over the Groot Rivier as we entered the town of Steytlerville just somehow made us feel that this place was special. The wide dual main road which was so impressively clean as you cruised down it was brilliant. We really had no clue the Eastern Cape had such beautiful places hiding in plain sight. The highlights for us were the Lady de Waal Bridge as one enters the town and of course the three old churches, the cute houses and the friendly people. I am flabbergasted. Watching this video brought back so many memories. Today I am 58. My brothers and I were enrolled in the boarding school around 1976. Mr. Sangerhause was the headmaster of the boarding school. Before entering the town, we as kids used to swim in the river on weekends. We attended the huge church on Sundays and went to Carel du Toit. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. It keeps the memories alive. Thank you so much.

Ag, man, that was moerse lekker! What a lovely surprise to discover your channel. I have very fond memories of Steytlerville: we lived in the town for about six months in 1957 when my father was the clerk of works (liaison between the then Cape Provincial Roads Dept. and the civil engineering contractor) on the tarring of the main street, both the section known as Piet Retief St and the Sarel Cilliers St section. We stayed in a small annexe to a boarding house, both still standing in Piet Retief St. The boarding house is a little single-storey building with a green roof and yellow trim around the windows and doors and is opposite the little curio shop that sells fruit and vegetables as well and has a deli. You have absolutely made this ouk's day here in Australia! Dankie!!!!

Agreed! We're not big on major research before we visit a site, but thought the part of the Algoa Sea was rather interesting. Those rock formations at Draaikrans literally rocked our world! 😁 Glad you enjoyed it too! ⛰️👌🏻

Read somewhere the church was the largest (think seating) in SA until the Groote Kerk in Cape town decided it was not on and added a balcony which restored there ego. Interesting it also have one of the widest main roads, because there is only one road in and out of town, and it was this wide for the ox wagons to be able to turn around to exit town. Pragtige dorp! Interesting info about the Groote Kerk! 👌🏻 We believe the church in Steytlerville is still the largest Edwardian-style church in the country and what a beautiful building it is! ⛪ We love those wide roads and can always imagine the ox wagons going along them in days gone by! That must've been a sight to see. 🐂 You should definitely pay this lovely town a visit when you're able to, you'll love all the little bits of history to be found here. 🤩🚗

Those rock formations are amazing. So many faces in them! Cant help seeing faces. Our earth is so wonderful with all the geology and history. I love the beautiful churches you take pictures of. I have only once been to Steytlerville and it is the one time I saw lightening actual bolt down to the earth. Aarde toe gebliksem! What an awesome sight! Unfortunately the farm stay we had booked was at the end of an absolutely impossible long road, full of sharp stones. We felt to sorry for Miss Opal and her tyres, so we pushed on to Uitenhage. From here, you guys could do Baviaanskloof, which is also lovely

Those rock formations at Draaikrans were some of the most spectacular we've ever seen, especially those vertical layers! 😍🥰 The grand old Edwardian church was truly something to behold, it's sheer size was mind-blowing. ⛪ Your experience of lightning sounds awesome, that would give anyone a newfound respect for nature and its strength. ⚡ We're planning Baviaanskloof for a future trip and with a slightly more offroad vehicle. 😁🚗

An impressive church to visit is the Llandaff Oratory situated just before Van-Reneen's pass en-route to Durban from Harrismith. There's also a nice tea garden situated on the same property. Steytlerville looks like an impressive town to visit.

Well, well, well the first travellers went over but you could go through the mountains, how beautiful they are. Those rock formations were amazing at Draaikrans. Just loved the flag paintings at Noordpoort. Lady de Waal bridge great. Very nice town although I have not heard of . Thank you for taking me onlong.
