After leaving Dewetsdorp we turned off to see if we could visit the Jimmie Roos School but special permission is required, so we were not allowed access. Then we took off and found a gravel road which took us on a beautiful drive to Reddersburg. On this road we got to see some amazing birdlife, an absolutely beautiful cow which had a serious attitude and some stunning scenery. We could not believe our eyes when we saw the magnificent churches in this small Free State town. Driving through the streets we could also see a proud community working together. The Sarie Marais Hotel is under new management and they were finishing off the renovations when we visited and were open for business. Then we stopped off at the N6 Farm Stall, where they explained to us how they were helping the local community by selling their products. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #reddersburg #freestate #jimmieroos #travelongravel

That cow has a few admirers already and boy, was she gorgeous! 😍🐄 The Sarie Marais Hotel was such a bright example of what can be achieved if one puts deeds to words. I agree with you fully, the community spirit we saw in this town, is absolutely exemplary and needs to be commended. 👌🏻

Another very surprising town - as soon as you diverted off the main drag, the hidden charm of the town was revealed. Clearly lots of history, great community spirit, beautifully maintained churches with their outstanding gardens, freely roaming pigs (lovely to see them!) - even a windmill (windpump!) in the town. The gravel road to get there was especially enjoyable. So much to see - that glamorous cow was the standout for me, but I also loved the geese/birds and buck along the way and that little oasis of water.

Oh yes, the charm is always found off the main roads and that's why we always stray away from them! 😁 So happy that you're in agreement about the cow, she was the highlight on the gravel road for us too, what superior attitude she had! And with good reason! 😍🐄 The pigs in town were wonderful to see, Sonia thought they were just the cutest things! 🐷

In my day, Jimmie Roos was a school for boys from broken homes, though the boys were not necessarily troubled. One could access freely as well; it even then had to attempt to shake of a "juvi image." Klipfontein was General Christiaan De Wet's main farm, our of three, which included Rooipoort where Jimmie Roos is, and Nuwejaarsfontein. Stilfontein was the neighbouring farm to the west of Nuwejaarsfontein. Mr Gideo Joubert, then chairmain of the Wool Board, owned Klipfontein. Mrs Joubert and her excellent team of Basotho ladies were quite industrious, as they weaved the merino wool into all kind of blankets, tapestries and whatnot. We often visited, also their farm manager Johan de Beer and his family. Job creation even in the 1960's was quite a thing. Thanks for showing me the towns I could never see, all around Dewetsdorp. I only ever saw and visited farms in the districts, but Never Zastron, Wepener, Smithfield or Reddersburg. My Darlingsmost Wificle and I just laughed when the two of you inadvertently skipped Reddersburg. Unlike here in Cape Town, Free State people have an extremely strong sense of ubuntu ("I am, because we are" and pronounced ooh-booon-too) and we really miss that. People in the city should learn from these rural folks how to stand together and face the storms. The sense of community in Dewetsdorp was overwhelming in a most positive way. We often had visitors to our home on Rooipoort, and while coffee was served, one of us would slip a gift of produce into their cars' trunks. There was locally harvested honey, all kind of veggies, most divine strawberries, etc. Even biltong can jump into the trunk of an Opel Rekord faster than 007 could.

We would've liked to take a drive to the school itself to observe the buildings and grounds, but we were expressly told to call the Principal for access, but decided against it. We chose not to include close-up footage of it, but there were security guards and two booms as we entered the area and we were specifically told that it was a school for 'naughty' boys. We took that at face value since we had no other information at hand and assumed that the security guard, who was quite well-versed, would know. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Be that as it may, the location we thought was super interesting, so I'm sure the school has a rich history. So here I thought Stilfontein was another settlement and now I learn it's the name of a farm, thank you for the info. 👌🏻 It was very enlightening to read about how you gifted produce to visitors, I would imagine that those recipients would have been so grateful for receiving it. If only we could all be like that again and practice it in our daily lives. You specifically mentioned produce, so it wasn't a gift of great monetary value, but still so very valuable. Those are really the gifts that come from the heart and hands and count the most. Thank you for sharing that with us. 🍓🍯

@@DustBugsTravel Pity you didn't call. You missed out on something of importance in that district, indeed. I take after my father, who easily drives onto premises with signposts reading 'TRESSPASSERS WILL BE SHOT" as he did at Kon Tiki near Infanta. I was once escorted away by some Recces for driving up their road, although signposts were absent - so I was innocent.

We loved the antelope on the gravel road too, it's always great to see life as we pass by on these backroads. 🦌🦆 The Sarie Marais Hotel has undergone quite the transformation and even more so since our visit. It had gotten a fresh coat of paint in as trendy a colour as the interior and it looks fantastic now, judging from pics we've seen. I believe Gerard Moerdyk designed both those sandstone churches, we thought it was only the bigger one. He indeed had a singular talent and a magnificent eye to envisage such beauty. ⛪ I haven't been to the Voortrekker Monument in many years, but I agree that it is a spectacular building and so unique in design. 🏛️ It must've been quite a sight on your drive to work every day. I also remember seeing it in the distance often as we drove by. Thank you once again for exploring with us! 😁🚗

But whoe, I must shamefully admit that I have NEVER been to the 'centre' of this town ! One always just passes through but next time I definitely will go through the business hub.

It even has a different colour jacket on now than when we were there recently and captured on video. I'm sure you'll enjoy your next stopover there a lot! The rest of town is definitely also worth a drive through. 😁🚗

@@lobofelipelobo In all of the world's countries, rural depopulation follows industrialization and it it no different here. And, when a neo-Marxist pro-socialist government came into power 28 years ago, the local oligarchy were so corrupt that it had killed of an economy that once was one of the strongest in the world. Ideology never results in good governance, as the many failed communist states in the world had proven over the past century. Our national airlines, now a flying dodo, was once the world's #1, as were our railways, power utility, scientific and medical research, etc. Today, raw sewage run in streets, there's water restrictions even when dams overflow as inept people cannot manage infrastructure, and all of this means that jobs are lost, businesses close and poverty increases in the name of Karl Marx. He lived in Cape Town in the 1800's and the effect of his sick mind is felt to this day. The British, in their typical delusion, saw that evil man as a "great leader. & philosopher."

Skuinskoek was a very nice surprise. I first tasted that at Kleinplasie Open Air Museum in Worcester, never experienced it in the Free State before. Black geese were present but not all too common; not to be confused with the black swans that were imported for the Royal visit of 1947-ish (their descendants are at Worcester's dilapidated caravan park, another forgotten place that was popular in its day.) Any stock farmer here, please tell us what kind of cow that was - never seen any like that before. At Rooipoort, we just had Frisians. I saw a street in Sandton on YT today; roads in the Free State are much better than the supposed tarmac in the wealthiest square mile of Africa.

Sonia just loves skuinskoek and now whenever we see it, it has to be bought. 😁 And she always announces it's for breakfast with coffee the following morning, but let's just say there are very few, if any at all, left when it comes to breakfast time. 🤣 Interesting that you saw it first in Worcester, we again have never seen it in the Western Cape! I would also love to know what kind of cow that was, at this point all I know is that we think she's one of the most beautiful cows we've ever seen! 😍🐄 To your point of roads and streets, we honestly had no issue with the potholes we saw and experienced on this trip. Granted, some of them were very bad indeed, but if one takes it slow, it poses no real threat. It is what it is and that's certainly not going to keep us away in the future. And I agree with you, I've also seen roads in affluent suburbs and towns that are also not in the greatest condition either! 🚗🛣️

@@DustBugsTravel Worcester is the only place in the WC where skuinskoek was known, to my knowledge. It actually is a Hantam-Tankwa kinda thing, or even Namakwaland. Brilliant to see how the local crafters and bakers are supported by local outlets. I particularly liked those old footed arger stoves, Were they used as heaters or actually for sale? You always seem to bring out the best of the little dorpies. I hope one day through the vision and hard work of citizens with passion our towns will return to their former beauty. This country is so worth seeing, well done for inspiring us to go and see whats on offer out in the countryside. AGA stoves ran on anthracite, usually, and couldn't burn coal or wood, therefore a costly exercise. In our kitdchen on Rooipoort, we had a very shiny black anthracite stove, and that fuel cam in bags via rail, and collected at Dewetsdorp station. AGA was a common brand, but a bit upmarket as those were expensive even back then. The wood burning Welcome Dover was more of an Average Joe's item.

There is simply no point in doing otherwise and luckily so much beauty and good remain everywhere if one just wants to see it. 🤩 We found the whole concept of the farmstall very inspiring and a very good example to all of us of how we can work together to help lift a community, especially when going through tough times. As far as I could tell, the stoves were used for heating since it can get pretty cold in the Free State. 🥶 Whether or not they were actually for sale, I don't know. Philippolis is a nice touristy town that is unfortunately dieing due to neglect like all the small towns...To take in the history of Philippolis, you would need to include a visit to Hobhouse and the War Museum in Bloemfontein, both have lots of history around Emily Hobhouse. The town Hobhouse was named after Emily...

We did indeed visit Philippolis on this trip and that video will be uploaded in the next week or two. Although we love and appreciate the historical facts of a town, it's not all about the history for us and we just love pottering around a place to see what we happen upon. We're like typical tourists, but in our own country and we're loving it! 😁 Hobhouse wasn't on our route this time around, but we might include it in a return trip to the Free State. I'm very familiar with Bloemfontein and the War Museum in the city, but our only stops in the City of Roses will be to visit family and friends and to drive past buildings and places which hold personal significance for me. 👌🏻

That Irish surrender deserves a mention. I know a descendant of those Irish, a Mr Gibson, who told me that the Irish often fought on the side of the Boers, as for them opposing the English. Tribalism and racism is quite a thing in UK & Northern Ireland, but perhaps all over Ireland? Anyhow, it wasn't for a lack of gumption or their ire being in deficit that caused them to surrender. It seemed to have been a political decision and not a walk-over by De Wet. An interesting part of history. We also have Scots and Welsh as friends, they all hold the same views. 😀

I mentioned the Battle of Mosterdshoek above. I have not been to the site but apparently the battle took place over two days; the Boers were stationed on a hill and could fire down on the camp. There was little or no shelter and the Tommies were exposed to accurate rifle fire. They ran out of ammunition as well as food and had to surrender. As far as I can recall the fallen are buried in the local cemetery - the poor cemetery is not maintained very well but the distinctive British War Grave crosses are clearly visible. There is an article on the battle on the web.

A fellow viewer informed us that both stone churches were designed by Gerard Moerdyk and both are very impressive structures. 💒 I'm not sure if the bell chimes on the hour, I always hope we happen to be at or in the vicinity of a church when the bells chime, but it doesn't happen all that often. Most bells we've come across sadly don't chime anymore. My folks lived in Kroonstad for about ten years, so I know the town well. We'll certainly visit again, but it will be for the sole purpose of visiting gravestones and properties associated with my family. ❤️ I never thought that the farmstall slogan may be a play on loadshedding, how clever if that is indeed the case! 🥧💡

Not too difficult to guess what the main trade of the Sarie Marais Hotel is! To me it looks like a brothel.

Having walked around the hotel myself, I didn't get that vibe at all and I don't think your assumption is correct. It's not fair in my view to make that assumption based on the decor of the place, if that is what you're basing your assumption on. We thought the new owners took great initiative to bring a little colour and quirkiness to a southern Free State town. Kudo's to them! 👌🏻🏨
