We left Soebatsfontein and travelled on a beautiful scenic gravel road all the way to Hondeklip Bay. We arrived late in the afternoon, went to our accommodation directly to check in and then immediately started our exploration of the small fishing village. Situated along the Namaqualand coast, we found this little place to be very quiet. We did not see many people around. I'm pretty sure it gets much busier during the holiday season. We wanted to see the rock which looked like a dog because that is how this village got its name. In the beginning we struggled to see the resemblance, but I think we finally were able to figure it out, more-or-less at least. Then, after a short drive through the village, the light started to fade so we returned to our accommodation for the night and continued exploring the next morning. We had to go to the beautiful lighthouse we saw from our chalet and that is exactly what we did! We were very happy that we were able to drive right up to this impressive structure. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #hondeklipbay #hondeklipbaai #northerncape #soebatsfontein

Hi you two! Thank you for taking me along on this Namakwa trip. So real South Africa! According to Wikipedia, Hondeklipbaai was once a harbour to export copper ore from the mines around Springbok. This apparently moved to Port Nolloth. I think any fishing and boating enthusiast will love this place. Keep up the cuppas and stay safe!
@DustBugsTravel

Hello there! Interesting info about the copper exports from this particular harbour, we didn't know that. We heard quite a bit about copper later on this trip, which was a first for us. Definitely an idyllic place for anyone who loves fishing, I completely agree! I thought you may enjoy the cuppas with the lighthouse in the background. 🎑☕ We're glad to have had you on the backseat for this one and we'll see you soon again! 🚗

Thank you again for a fabulous trip. The poor little Kwid rattled a lot. The scenery so typical of that coast, not your usual pretty but absolutely beautiful and beguiling. So difficult to explain to anyone who has not experienced it. Much appreciated.

I'm glad you enjoyed our visit to Hondeklip Bay! 🤩🌊 The Kwiddie is not the quietest ride at the best of times, but that doesn't bother us in the slightest. The road to the lighthouse was extra sandy in places, but it turned out to be no problem for the little car, which remains an absolute beast! 🚗😍 I love your description of the scenery as 'beguiling', so incredibly apt. Thanks for coming along with us!

Lekker ou Hondeklipbaai. In the days when you could still drive on the beach, Hondeklipbaai was the gathering point, we drive up the remains of the Aristea, and then back on the road about 14km and we turn south at the gate where the Namaqua National Park, the coastal section is now. And there the fun started...but I will spare you the boring betails.. 🙂. In the holiday season Hondeklipbaai is very busy. When we camp in the Park a lot of us drive out to Hondeklipbaai to get some supplies and to eat some fish and chips...look at the sea....have some wine with old friends form previous camps . If the Westcoast is in your blood, it does not matter what the elements throw at you...yes and thanx for showing this part of the country to the rest of the world...

I just knew you'll have some special memories of this place and I wasn't wrong! 😁 I can hear your love for the West Coast as I read your comment. We had an absolute blast exploring this part of our country, to which we've never been before. We don't mind bad weather at all and happily take it as it comes, but the lack of cellphone signal is sometimes a struggle for us. 😏 We messed up by missing the Aristea shipwreck, I'm quite bummed about that. 🥴 We had one spot of signal between Soebatsfontein and Hondeklip Bay and not again until we were long gone out of the village and only realised it then. 🙄 Thanks for visiting this part of the country with us and for sharing your special memories, I appreciate that. We shall see you in the next town and no prizes for guessing where that will be! 😁🚗

@@DustBugsTravel me too, thank you.. I'd forgotten about this little village ..was sad to see their rooftops off . Growing up in Zambia, i remember we used to sit around the old wooden stoke, eat dumplings and dance langarm(sp). Mum taught us to sing all the nice Afrikaans tunes about the trains on Namaqualand's line, about Om Maarman who would bring broet, Kanyas and Fat and we had a special one on Hondeklipbaai. I cannot remember the words anymore but the little tune is ringing in my mind but the words have all but disappeared
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Жыл бұрын
Sounds like very fond memories those. Langarm is spelt 100% correctly. 👌Don't worry about not remembering the lyrics to the song, as long as the tune lingers, it will always remind you of special times with Mum! 😊🎼

So we did struggle a little to see the dog in the rock, I'm not going to lie. 🙄🐶 Other viewers have explained that the village actually does get quite busy during holiday season, so it sounds like it's not always that quiet. There are certainly enough accommodation establishments in town, so it would make sense. It certainly was a very interesting village and I'm sure many artists would find numerous beautiful scenes to paint and draw. Thanks for taking this drive with us! 🤩🚗

Thanks for once again taking me back on roads years ago traveled. My dad worked for Namaqualand Ventures(they had to go from farm to farm to see if it would be viable for De Beers to mine there). We stood for a long time at koinaas?? and Hondeklipbaai were where all shopping happened. This were in the 1960's and at that time the Canning Co were going strong. The last camp were at Kleinzee and begining of 1970 we moved to the then Transvaal as Namaqwa Ventures were disbanded. Thank you once again. Hope you will take the road to Koinaas and from there go to Springbok via the Wildeperdhoekpas. Be safe.

It's our pleasure to take you to places of which you have fond and special memories. 😊 That sounds like quite an interesting time in your life and your dad certainly had an interesting job! Koingnaas, we later learnt, is spelt with 'ng', but it's silent for the most part as we understand it and almost everyone says 'Koinaas'.. This trip was a few weeks ago already and we took a different route, so didn't do the Wildeperdehoek Pass this time around. We'll remember that for a future possible trip back to the area. We so appreciate you watching our video! 🤩🚗

Our pondok was actually quite comfortable, albeit very compact. 😁 We were so tired that night that we literally just fell into bed. I knew you would appreciate that open-air art gallery. We drove past it a couple of times and I didn't even notice it, until Sonia said I should turn around and stop there. It was great to see such imagination and certainly put a smile on our faces! 🖼️ The road which eventually led to the ligthouse was rather thick with sand, so the wheels were churning ever so slightly, but luckily we made it through! 😁🚗

We've never been to this particular part of the West Coast and we weren't expecting a small village like this either, so that was rather surprising to us too. Like you, we were also always under the impression that it's more of a holiday destination, rather than a small fishing village. It just goes to show that one doesn't really know unless one visits in person. We certainly learnt that more than once on this trip. That canning company must've been quite a big operation before it closed down, it was sad to see those buildings all but destroyed. 😢 The lighthouse was literally the highlight of our visit to Hondeklip Bay, that was magnificent to see and we even got up several times during the night to see it flashing! 🎑🤩

My heartbeat increased, spectacular scenery. Like the old yellow car body and plough with the koppie as background. Lost for words. The Kwid is challenged by the corrugations and starting to produce a musical vibrating melody. Reminded me of past experiences. We once travelled the western part of Namibië, north of the canyon to a place called Helmeringshausen, in a Fiat Uno. The Uno vibrated similarly. But we were accompanied by two 4x4s, the Uno handled the roads much better than the other two vehicles, especially the more sandy roads. Keep up the good stuff, appreciate what you endure to supply prima footage and chats to our houses.

😁 The Kwiddie is never quiet or rattle-free, but it certainly voiced its opinion of the roads we encountered in Namaqualand rather loudly. 😍🚗 Love your story about the Uno and the two 4x4 companions, I was an Uno owner myself and loved that little car so much! Netjies! I visited Hondeklipbay about 12 years ago and this little village is expanding for sure. There was no paving when i was there. I stayed in Honnehok chalets for 2 days. The actual Hondeklip's nose was struck of by lightning years ago. There is also a shipwreck named Aristea nearby who run on the rocks years ago. I believe not much is left now. I lost a beer nearby the wreck to cool down is the icy waters but the tide took it. Anyone who can find it now ows me for a 12 year old KWV. Safe travel!

Another fun adventure, thank you. I was on the edge of my seat whilst you were negotiating your way on that very sandy, narrow road to reach the lighthouse - but my goodness, seeing how delighted you were at successfully conquering that quest in the Kwid, was worth all the nervousness I felt. I was just concerned, because I don’t think we had any supper (with the restaurants seemingly closed and you not wanting to share). I had a grumbly tummy all night and we only had coffee the next morning (no boere beskuit or mosbolletjies!)

Oh no, you've just forgotten that the Kwiddie has handled much worse roads for much longer on previous trips! This one was maybe a little different because of the sand, but it still made it through like the little trooper it is! 🚗 🤩 I actuallly find it rather strange that you would've forgotten the memorable dinner the evening before. 🤷🏼‍♂️ You still complimented the chef on the two-minute noodles he bought at the container shop in the village. A small question: What is your relationship to Namaqualand? You seem to have such a love for the place. That is my place though i never grew up there. Family is there. My Mum left the place, specifically Port Nolloth in the 60's for a holiday to Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) and Zambia. She never returned. We ended up staying in Zambia until 1994. In 94, instead of coming back immediately, i settled with my family in Botswana till 2004. Only came back 2004 to South Africa and settled in Limpopo. Brought her back in 97 but she never stayed long. She got her heart's wish. She always said that when she dies, she wants to be buried in the same place Ouma and Oupa were buried. She got her wish and rests in the same old cemetery of Concordia with her parents. Over the years back, I have been home a few times but mostly to Springbok and Concordia, Last trip, went up to Port Nolloth. I have made stopovers along the way from Pretoria to Springbok. I really want to get into the interior and see the places off the beaten track - Reinvasmark, Bitterfontein etc The NC has so much to offer, so many beautiful places

Wow, thank you so much for sharing your family history with us. It's so special that your mother was buried where she wished to be. 🤗 When my wife heard you live in Limpopo, she had a very wide smile on her face. She was born in Tzaneen and still loves the province dearly. 😍 Now to answer your question. We love nature in all its forms, period. We have no specific association with the Namaqualand region, other than my mom-in-law who was born in Vanrhynsdorp, but we never really explored the area until this trip. I'm not sure how many of our videos you've seen, but we love the diversity of landscapes, vegetation, coastlines, etc. that this wonderful country have to offer. So as long as we can be in nature and experience the local natural beauty of a place, we're literally in heaven. We're glad you're tagging along. Check out our drive through Bitterfontein and neighbouring Nuwerus in Episode 137. I'm sure you've seen the ones of Springbok and Port Nolloth already! 😁🚗

We're glad to hear that you're enjoying travelling with us through our videos! 🚗 We're very vigilant and feel quite safe while travelling for the most part. We've really only ever felt unsafe once on all our travels. We try our best to avoid travelling after dark, but it's not always possible. When we leave home on a trip, we leave in the early hours of the morning since our distances have become much further from home lately. Other times, we explore so much and get so carried away, that we leave a specific place too late to arrive at our place of accommodation before dark. It doesn't happen that often though. We just feel much more comfortable driving during the day. I hope you're planning a trip in the not-too-distant future! 🤩🇿🇦

When visiting, please take your own water, as that place has even less than most. This is why it remains under-developed.

Indeed. It's a good policy to always carry one's own water supply for drinking, coffee, etc. We always do when we travel by vehicle, irrespective of our destination. Our hosts in Hondeklip Bay didn't advise us to bring our own water. However, we only stayed in the village for one night. It may be different for longer-term visitors. 🤷🏼‍♂️ There were several large water storage tanks next to our chalet, which were interesting to see.

@@DustBugsTravel Back in the day, it was a request on a local tourism website. Some years ago, I initiated the Bottles for Beaufort initiative.

Very poor community, no job opportunities. Again you will notice the harsh dry environment. Water is a scarce commodity.

We noticed the arid environment throughout the Namaqualand region and I believe at one point, perhaps still I'm not sure, visitors to Hondeklip Bay were requested and encouraged to bring their own water. A scarce commodity indeed. And a critical one at that since water is life. 💧

Wat het julle gedink van daai Hondeklipbaai ? Is dit net vakansie gangers plekkie of bly mense daar permanent? Want daai plekkielyk baie stil en rustig. Baie oulik .

Hondeklipbaai is essentially a fishing village and the vast majority of residents are permanent as far as we could tell. We didn't see many holidaymakers, but we weren't there in peak season, so can't say for sure how many holidaymakers actually visit the village. It's very small, peaceful and quiet as you say. The weather here will almost certainly be a lot cooler than the inland areas of the Namaqualand because of the cool air from the ocean. The closest big centre would be Springbok, over 100km away, and partially gravel, depending on which route you take. 😁🚗

We've been through Napier a time or two, but don't know the town well at all. Since it's inland, you may very well experience summers on the warmer side and coldish winters. We actually stayed over there on a farm just outside town about a year ago. It was still when we didn't explore towns in great detail like we do now, but you can certainly check out Episode 40 to get a feel for the vibe of the place. 😁🚗
