S1 - Ep 474 - Frankfort, Free State!

My family visited Frankfort about 50 years ago). I only have 2 memories. My mom sent me in to the department store to buy a crochet hook. Being English, I had no idea what that was in Afrikaans. (I was about 12) No-one could understand me, and sent me to the fishing department for a hook. Another memory was that my dad had caught a fish and put it in a bucket of water. My sister, who was about 5, cried bitterly for the poor fish and made my dad take it back to the river. The fish supposedly went back, and we did not question it. Thinking back on it, I doubt that it took it back. Probably gave it to some other fisherman.

This is probably one of the most amazing church buildings you have ever shown on this channel. The dome roof is very impressive. Been in town many times as a sales rep but never inside the church.

what I also love is learning about some of the history of the two Anglo Boer wars which we never learnt at school and the memorial statues erected. The church is absolutely stunning. Proving you can never keep an South African down.

Hi you two! What a place Frankfort is! Quite bigger than I thought. To see so much green in a Free State town is quite surprising, especially those wonderful willows along the river. The DRC is also amazing. Thank you Sonia for the history you tell us. You guys seem to manage to find a more interesting and beautiful place with each trip you make. I can't wait for the next one! Absolutely beautiful NG church, especially the spectacular dome roof. Amazing bell and clock mechanism in the church steeple dating back to 1911 ..... and still functioning! Very cute little English church as well. The willow trees lining the Wilge river is just picture perfect. The lodge on the banks of the river, which is currently being revamped, will be a prime destination for rejuvenation of body and soul when completed. Thank you for the visit to Frankfort which is far larger than I imagined the town to be.

Thank you so much for showing us fantastic Frankfort. My husband's sister in law lives there and attends the NG kerk. She has always said it's a beautiful church and she wasn't exaggerating! She says she walks past that bridge every day on her daily walk.

When I hear Frankfort I immediately think of a sausage! I have been through there once or twice. The old bridge is truly beautiful. Willows are indeed calming. Willow bark is the source of aspirin. There is something very touching about the church that was burned down and rebuilt. You are very brave to climb that ladder but isn't it amazing to see the clock works. I wonder what the bell with the hole in it sounds like now. Probably from ding ding to dang dung! Love the bus painted with cosmos. I grow lots of cosmos in my garden. Animals dressed in clothes are creepy 🥴😬

I was very fortunate to be able to see the workings of the church clock up close, it was a fantastic experience. The entire thing is in such wonderful shape and even the bell with the bulletholes in, added a lot of character to this wonderful church complex. 🚙💒

Hi guys lovely big town with all the facilities even a take away and bar called plaats jaapies they have a good sense of humour!!! The little bridge over the willow River and trees perfect name. Love the rondevelles and nice big pub and grill with thatched roof. Golf and bowls club good sign things are going well. The stone buildings of the police station and prison stunning. Beautiful voortrekker garden well kept ( I wonder if they may have been prisoners doing the work) I'm going to have to follow you Curtis stunning loved the dome and the pipe organ the music fitted the scene what a privilege to be able to see the clock mechanism. The history was interesting and the old bell still standing!!! ( little bakie parked outside) .Great you found the name boards sad about the station buildings. Thought frankfort to be a thriving place clean and tidy just a note willow trees have properties that cure head aches they say if you stand under one it can help you with pain .brilliant video thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

You raise an interesting point about prisoners possibly working in the Voortrekker Garden. This practice was quite common in my younger days, but I think has all but been phased out since. I do believe they were municipal workers, but with the correctional facility just across the road, anything is possible! 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'll certainly remember to go and stand under a willow tree next time I have a headache. If I can find one when that happens, they're not all that common where we live. 🌴

It makes me so sad, how the stations have been destroyed in South Africa. I remember as a child when we watched the train go past at a Siding and the train driver waving at us, as he drove past. Today's children will never know that experience

Hi there. I'm really enjoying your videos of Free State Towns, most of which I've never visited. Just a question please: I notice that you no longer visit cemeteries. I always found them interesting. I know many of them were neglected and in poor condition - Is that maybe the reason? Travel safe and enjoy!

I'm glad you're enjoying the Free State so far, it's a special place! 🧡 I will also always find cemeteries and gravestones interesting. Neglect, decay and such don't faze us one bit, as is evident from some of the places we visit and include in our videos. Cemeteries are located for the most part on the outskirts of towns though and there are oftentimes vagrants moving around these areas. There have been an incident or two where I felt that they got too close to our vehicle for my liking. We travel for fun and safety will always be my top priority. I got tired of having to look over my shoulder the entire time to make sure that Sonia was safe, so I decided to give them a skip on this trip. I may reconsider this decision on future trips, quite a few viewers have asked about them. 🚙🏛️

Has the name Free State been changed like some of the other provinces. If I came back to South Africa I wouldn't recognise a lot of names. Frankfort looks like a lovely place..

The name of the province was Orange Free State until 1994, so only the 'Orange' was dropped afterwards. I, for one, am super happy that the name is almost the same as it always was. We knew it as the Free State anyway, for the most part. 🚙🧡

We hope to make a return visit to the Free State some time in the future and will keep Villiers in mind. We have no firm plans for such a trip just yet though. 🚙🙂
