Excellent. It will take me many hours to absorb this information and apply pieces to my current work in process, but learning is part of the joy of writing! Thank you!

Hi, I have a question. I'm writing fantasy novel with teenager protagonists. While main plot is adventurous quest, the story itself is reach with symbolism and subtexts. So, one publisher, while appreciating complexity of the story, turned me down since it should be categorized as YA fantasy, and for that audience story seem to be too complex and therefore not that profitable. On the another hand, it is not standard fantasy (for adults) since protagonists are teenagers. He did not read whole novel, just synopsis (with all spoilers included) and two chapters. I still think that young audience can enjoy main plot without much distraction to subtle symbolism and subtext. I put it there for those who will get it and enjoy the story on another more rich level too. Do you have any advice on this issue? Thank you very much for your work and making it available for us all. ps: English is not my first language.

Agents will always be concerned with where a book fits in the market, and this can be challenging for stories such as yours. However, I would keep querying and get feedback from other agents. If they keep telling you the same thing, that is probably a sign that, in order for the book to succeed in traditional publishing, you may have to tweak some things. You might also want to research comparative titles that fit to see how similar books are marketed.

@@KMWeilandAuthor Thank you for quick response. Yes, I was planning to revisit the story before contacting other publishers. When writing in native language it is a small market here in my country. Greeting from Croatia :)

Why do you call it a three act structure when it is obviously a 4 act structure? I mean, aside form outdated naming conventions by scriptwriters there is no reason to carry this unclear language just for tradition sake.
