Late models were doing close to that at the Bristol Dirt Nationals the past few years. In 2001 or 2002, World of Outlaws hosted 410 sprint cars at Bristol on dirt, and they were clocking almost 160.

Eh. World of outlaws refused to come back to race on dirt at Bristol because of safety concerns. They put dirt on Bristol in 2000 or 2001 and raced sprint cars on it.

My dad raced there for years. He said the drivers had a meeting about the speed. The drivers were concerned the dirt track cars werent designed to take an impact into the wall at that speed and someone may get killed. Thats why they cut the track down.

They can go about 150 at bulls gap in East Tennessee and Cherokee speedway in Greenville South Carolina. They don't even prep a track like that. Sunday day races back in the day were amazing. Atomic when I was a kid would take rubber and those cars in the 89s 90s flying

"Black oil" sounds like bitumen, and if you mix that with sand or gravel you basically have asphalt, so while it might have started out as a dirt track, they more or less asphalted it.

My mom raced a dirt outlaw latemodel here a few times when she raced and my dad was her pit crew and crew chief and engine builder car builder ect but they said that this was crazzy and a blast and they had to really buckle the car down as in add extra Zeus fastners to the body and made sure the hood pins was adjusted and as tight as possible and that the body pannels had no edges that could get caught by the air and also they made sure that the car was as aerodynamic and as much downforce as possible body wise but atill legal and she said they was flat footed whole way around but made for boring racing cause it was follow the leader the whole race from lap 10-last lap but if the latemodels rab thier feature first then they had side by side racing for the first 10 laps and it was wild lile it was the last lap cause as soon as the line was worked in it was then follow the leader and very hard to pass so you had to pass as much as you coulf at the start of the race. I wish i could have raced on the old surface but closest thing to this i raced at every sat night was mobile intl speedway half mile high bank copy of the old bristol lay out and no walls except front stretch and i have ran a sprint car there twice and the police officer clocked me at 175 mph fown front stretch we never lift at all and it was scary the forst time i ran a sprint there coming from a pro truck and sportsman car which the truck had 405 hp to a 750 hp sprint was a huge jumk but fun and worth it

Lancaster motor speedway in SC is also very fast, it’s a 1/2 mile track. World of outlaws races there and we’re hitting 160+ mph. They said they weren’t coming back until they installed catch fences lol

Pretty cool! I worked at an indoor Karting center with a high rubber buildup(super grippy). Sometimes a kart would get an oil leak and if it was not a crazy leak it would actually make the track faster. If the leak got worse it would quickly kill the track but it was really fun to learn that a little oil made the track faster.

I'm just going off what I remember I don't know about the actual length of this track but I used to hear that Cherokee Speedway "the place your mama warned you about" was the fastest track in the southeast? But judging by how black that track is I'm seeing here I think somebody told me a story that's a lot of rubber on that dirt!

Florida uses oil on some of their track. Dirt has more sand in it, they use the tar oil as a binder.

@HoltAircraft when I was racing back in the 80s, it was asphalt oil. Stuff used to make asphalt. Before it's processed, sometimes it was just used oil on the smaller ones. It was a pain in the ass to wash off. Jacksonville Speedway , Fla. is the only name that comes to mind.

I raced at Grand isle when I was 14 just getting started in what is now super late model,it was extremely fast even with the old 358's 410 and 502 motors only making like 500 HP, These cars we run today make over a thousand HP,I ran Bristol dirt series 2 years ago my sister crashed at 147 mph I was clocked at 177 Scott bloomquest hit 188 in practice laps,You go 3 wide sideways at 160 plus that's racing, Nascar is like watching a train one line

The look of the dirt late models around the early 90s and late 90s was still being used around here all the way until I would say 2011 or 13. God I miss that style. I still know a few friends that still have old modifieds and old late models

Glazed over with a mix of oil and dirt airstrip sealant it basically became a concrete track with glue all the way around. It's popular with dirt RC tracks in California and the east coast now.

There are a few roads in the mountains where I live where they do this. It creates something similar to heavily used asphalt. There are a few holes and ruts but other than that you can send it and you can get some good controlled slides in.

Seen an old bloomquist car, casebolt, O’Neil. I remember watching them guys in the Lucas oil series when theyy come to bardstown ky. Waited out a rainstorm in night during the start of qualifying and O’Neil came out and set the track record. Those cars were so freaking fast that night with all that moisture in the dirt! People have always said they’re faster on dirt than on asphalt!

Listen, I am not a legal expert but i do work in the parts business at a junkyard. We have to send off EPA rainwater runoff samples so id say the EPA frowned on dumping oil around the track to "treat" it for dust ... lol .

I just wanted to clear some things up for those of you who are watching this and are not into racing: A track does not have a speed itself, so no track can be "fast". What the narrator is referring to in this video is the speed of the cars that used to race on it were going faster than what they did on other tracks. The cars are what is carrying the speed, while traveling along the track - which is always stationary.

Back in the early 80's i was in circle track dirt racing. We went to this track in Tazewell Tennessee. It was just a bowl cut in between two hills. A 1/4 mile bowl with high bank turns. Nothing on the inside. When they watered it, the water trailer would be sliding down the bank at an angle. The bad part was the outside fence. It was made out of 2" cast iron water pipe. Hitting it, it would break up and spear through the car killing some drivers.

From what i’ve heard they built a lotta fast cars. Won the Dirt Track World Championship one year. I’d love to hear some stories if anyone has any or have heard of them.
