NASCAR has held hundreds of races and dozens of those occurred in my backyard: the Greenville-Spartanburg Metro area. Not only was it the original location scouted out for Talladega Super Speedway, but it routinely finds itself in the top 3 TV markets for NASCAR and solidly in the top 10 for other motorsports. So, why don't we have a race here in GSP? And if we wanted a race, where's the most likely location for it? Well, let's find out.

@@S1apShoes Hey Slap I was just watching your latest vid on losing your home track. I feel your pain their as way too many historic sport venues are being lost to the real estate goons. Anyway this one showed up in the recommendations, so I am revisiting it. First off sorry for the super long comment and I broke it into a couple of parts. Couple of points: 1) I'm an Australian NASCAR fan and I absolutely agree on your views on real estate developers. They are a curse here just as much as they are everywhere else. AND YES we have lost some of our great tracks as well. 2) I went to college in America in the late 80s and fell in love with NASCAR back then. And yeah it was so awesome to watch Marcus Ambrose do well in NASCAR. 3) I also have a pilots license and I learned to fly at a airport very similar to Greenville. I want you to put the following number into Google *00180AD.* That will get you an airport diagram so you'll know what parts of field I am talking about. Remember pilots don't call things A, B, C we call then Alpha, Bravo, Charlie,.. 4) My boss through the late 90s early 2000s was a semi-retired open wheel driver and team owner in the category Scott Dixon raced right before he moved to America. *That boss raced at the Adelaide Grand Prix track and he once explained to me what made it a great track.* He told me that first complex (turns 1-2-3) was incredibly hard to get right and could easily wreck a lap and even a race. If you got it wrong you were at the mercy of the racing gods at turn 4. You could be so wide open the next 3 cars could just go past. It was a combination of hard braking, off camber and quick direction changes that unsettled even the best set-up cars. He once told me that those rapid right-left or left-right flip flops (as he called them) were just hard to get right. So part of the layout I'm suggesting is all towards that rapid change of direction. end part 1.

An option would be to take Hallett and give it some upgrades. It's a small little flowing roadie that has a mix of high speed straights and smooth corners that would give a Watkins Glen feel to it. It would need some pretty serious upgrades on the facility end, but it's very close to U.S. 412. There would need to be a few upgrades, but a sufficiently moneyed and motivated organization could do it.

NASCAR and the track did have talks and were extremely close to making it happen. The issue then, and now, was cost. You're basically saying, 'Don't have local fairs because tents are silly expensive'. I don't think it's a problem if the idea at the end is ROI for the investors/promoters putting up the money. For a new raceway to make it's money back would take years. For a weekend race to make back the money for portable bleachers would be an afternoon.

Here me out. So I come from a railroad background. Go for ABS. Have the local busnesses that use the rail line chip in for its reset location. Its a spur line for the small industires. NS/CSX aren't big on that kind of small carload traffic anyways. Its part of their plans to try and drop as much of that as possible. So they might just drop it altogether. (Railroad issue solved) 2. Allow local buisnesses to Sponcer construction, and even field a car. Get the locals to WANT to have the track there. It could attract them business. 3. Upgrade the toll road. Great idea. I'm from Adelaide, AUS, and for a city of a similar size we had a V8 supercars event that regularly pulled 200k over the weekend for a city street circuit. I will say from working at an airport similar to the one proposed, it's not as simple as just shutting down for a week or so while the preparations and race are done, and a lot of stuff can go to tge major airports due to fees or fixed base locations or even just total traffic the other airports can handle. Still, the market is definitely there.

one thing i have to mention though (as an amature pilot) there is no way the FAA or anyone involved in the flight school will go for the idea of allowing their runways to be converted into a temporary speedway. while it is a good logistical idea it just likely wont come to fruition. Unfortunately its a lot easier to get flying lessons than most people think so the chances of an international airport allowing a flight school to operate out of its single runway in a landlocked region are incredibly slim. and personally i dont know how much I would trust a runway that's been raced on knowing the tech that goes into those runways these days.

I grew up in Joliet and was lucky to have been able to attend a race while visiting my parents there one summer. My neighbor was a vendor, and they got me a free pass. I just walked in, waited for the race to start, spotted a section of empty seats right near the pit road exit, and then sat down and enjoyed the race. I now live in Greenville, SC (as do a LOT of people from the Chicago area now). It would be tough to get it done, but it would be pretty cool if it could happen.

Hey Slap. I’m from Belton Honea Path. I’ve been waiting on this video for 2 years and it didn’t disappoint at all. Your proposed idea is amazing. This needs to happen ASAP. This would be a booming market for NASCAR. How could we bring this to the attention of local leaders even more to maybe get in contact with NASCAR or SMI executives? Maybe petition or something?

Yes you do. That is their largest market for fans. You could put Rockingham and North Wilkesboro (repairs needed) as well and they would sell out. Don’t get me wrong, NASCAR expanding to new markets is a good thing. But they’ve neglected their core audience that paid to go to races that allowed them to expand in the first place. And with the fans dwindling (see New Hampshire, Chicago Land) they need that core fan base more than ever. But to get them back NASCAR has to be able to bend over backwards for them to earn their trust again.

I’m certainly open to the idea of a race in Greenville. In fact, seeing this video gave me some ideas to make this race an even bigger draw: 1. Have a support race for the locals racers. Given the impressive local racing scene in the GSP area, how about a race for them in front of the big league teams? They could either run the full road course or a temporary short track set around the start/finish line. But wait, there’s more: an active driver in each of NASCAR’s top national series filling the following honorary roles: grand marshal, pace car driver and flag waver for the race start. Oh, and bring in a living legend of the sport to present the winner’s trophy! How cool would that be!? 2. As for the potential schedule conflict with that nearby church, obviously I agree that any on-track activity shouldn’t conflict with their schedule, whatever it might be. But I do have an idea for how churchgoers can get in on the action at the races. I’ve taken inspiration for this from what Road America does for their concession stands, which are operated by local civic and church groups. If any of that church’s attendees have some unique recipes to show off at the concession stands, I say, “let them do so”. Thoughts, anyone?

This is super interesting thank you for the video! I grew up here and my grandfather knew Tom and worked for him for over 20 years. My whole dad's side of the family worked at the concession stands getting there at 7am every Saturday morning to prep for the upcoming race. Tom was the past owner of GPS until he passed away a few years ago and it was sold to Kevin Whitaker. Kevin is the owner of some Chevrolet dealerships and now owns the Speedway. I am sure Kevin Whitaker has the money to fix up this track someone needs to show this video to him!

You know what would make a neat (Maybe not _great,_ but definitely neat) exhibition race? Fuji Speedway. It's already used for almost every level of Japanese motorsport, from D1GP to SuperGT, and I think it'd be pretty damn cool to watch the big, burly American Stock Cars scream down the front stretch at Fuji. Just, uh... No stages, please. For the love of all that is holy.

Excellent post! I like the brainstorming of where they could race. But, we already have a road course...it already exists...in Spartanburg County. Why not the BMW test track? While it could be a conflict of interest, all the pieces are there to hold a NASCAR event. Six Lane Highway, Ample Parking, Huge Campus, American Made, and lastly in a perfect location. If memory serves me, Greenville South Carolina was the planned location of "Talladega Speedway"...but Greenville opted out! Maybe if lightning could strike twice they would not opt out a second time???

As a regional manager for PepsiCo, in 1983 I helped put on a race event in downtown Spokane, WA for stock cars and 2nd tier Formula 1 open-wheel plus two other classes. Put up barriers, welded down the manhole covers, and brought in temporary bleachers. 1st-year turnout was fantastic. This died after the second year. The reason was that we choked the downtown area for 10 + days prior to the event and 3 days after for tear-down. As proposed in your video, you would be choking down Greenville's biggest (only?) mall and largest retail areas. In order for this to be successful as a year-to-year event, you will need a comprehensive traffic program and buy-in from the retailers that would lose a week of sales. It's not just about where you can race, but being supported by the retailers whose businesses will be severely impacted. You won't know if you have an event until this issue is handled. Currently, thanks to Covid-19 and other long term factors, mall traffic is down a lot and declining. So timing may be good for a major event of this type as a way of creating a mall/retail event.
