Based in Dorset in the UK, Monkey World is the largest monkey and ape rescue centre on the planet. For nearly three decades, the team has saved countless primates - across 20 countries - from lives of cruelty, abuse, and neglect. This safe haven is now home to more than 200 monkeys and apes. The dedicated staff never stop in their quest to save animals from being mistreated by owners, ending up in laboratories or being exploited in the entertainment industry.
Nerves run high as the team attempts a first at the park: a surrogate mum for a new-born baby orang-utan. The orang-utan nursery mob love spending time in their new outside enclosure, and stubborn Hsiao-Ning is even starting to enjoy life! And in Hananya’s group, Patricia is being pursued by the alpha male.

I was so sad to realize that he died from liver cancer in 2007. He was an amazing human being, as is Alison. I'm happy that she's still going strong saving monkeys and apes.

When I was young, my family and I had the good fortune to care for a rescued baby chimp for several years. So I know some of what goes into keeping these amazing creatures happy and healthy and well loved; just one little girl was quite a bit of work, (but oh so very worth it). That beautiful people like the Cronin's and their friends have rescued and cared for so many can't be praised highly enough in my book. Looking back, I wish I'd made that my life's work; the thought of any of these primates and monkeys becoming extinct due to we humans thoughtlessness and greed is unbearable to me. I help a little from the outside, but it doesn't come anywhere near what these sainted people do or need. I honor the memory of Jim Cronin, and deeply thank everyone at Monkey World for their more than meaningful work.

When I was a PhD student in Borneo I volunteered at BOSF (Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation) and we always had surrogates and it worked awesome it's just that initial point is turning over the baby to an orangutan mother and not knowing what she may or may not do to the little.

I would have used the time when the surrogate orangutan mom was sedateted to teach the baby how to latch on and practice nursing. Another idea would be to make a mold of her breast/ nipple to create a very similar one for the bottle top so the baby can learn. (As a mom of many who had difficulty with breast feeding I've learned LOTS of tips and tricks because what is called "nipple confusion" is a very real thing for babies, but all they need is practice and they can drink from ANYTHING)😛🍼

It probably would be pretty darn hard to express milk from a lactating Orangutan to give Dindar an opportunity to get used to the taste. (Or even get a prosthetic Orangutan breast that could have a bladder to contain the milk and a keeper could "wear" it so babies could learn how to latch on and taste the actual milk.

If you start feeding with a floppy nippled and swishy bottle, such as juice sacks they may recognize the teat. Also, can you teach an Orang to express or allow you to express milk so the taste is recognized?

Jeremy and Mike are so awesome!!! What is the criteria used to decide that you guys take babies away from the Mothers? If a baby monkey gets used to humans handling them so soft and gently, I would imagine the Mothers touch might seem a bit rough... but that would be normal for them, right?

Yes and a bottle nipple is nothing like a real one. He also said it spit the milk out and the baby liked formula better.. SMH

@@Ericah81 Well they really didn't have a choice. If the baby isn't feeding it must be taken away or it will quickly weaken and die. These people truly knew what they were doing. This was many years ago. Keep watching and hopefully it all works out for the baby.

I wonder if it might be helpful if you guys had some training or could at least consult with a Lactation RN (Nurse specialized in breast feeding)? There was so much pressure on the baby and the surogate Mom to get it right and quickly! Having a baby too hungry with that 1st try didn't allow for both the patience and extra time required to have a bit of practice!?

I know quite a bit about orangutans, and I have yet to see these people do anything right when it comes to caring for them. Or any of the other monkeys for that matter. Just seems like they just want to take over the parenting immediately. Maybe it's how they edit the shows.

While I do agree that they could use some training,,because they are very quick to just give up n take the babies,I really saw that that the surrogate female they wanted the baby to go to,was however getting irritated at all the crying.I think maybe that they were scared she would unintentionally harm the baby,I hope that's what it was.I also think that the baby was taken away from its Mother so quickly, and bottle fed,that getting use to the smell,taste and the real nipple was gonna take a lil time,and they should have gave it the time it needed,2 hrs was not enough time.

@@llarcher4558 Sometimes I just dont understand why these people in these situations do what they do.Im not a primate specialist nor do I have any kind of training,but I do have common sense.Ever since my first trip to the Zoo when I was very small,orangutans and gorillas were my favorite. I wanted to grow up and work at a zoo with the "monkies and apes,I use to say.I was well on my way,in college,until my Mom was diagnosed with COPD,if your not familiar that is CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE. And it's a very nasty, rapid,life stealing disease. I took time away from college to help care for her, and to spend as much time as I could with her. She told me one day a few weeks before she passed that I'd be a great nurse and that's what she'd love for me to become, so I did. But I still love these animals,and Im so fascinated by them.And even I can see where they are making mistakes.

Of course I am not the monkey expert here, and I appreciate how much love and devotion these folks have for primates! Just observation on my part... How many people needed to be present and participating in the be in that 1st meeting,,, it seemed very stressful when 4 people (and even Allison's current pet project) had to be in there and giving their opinion regarding the smallest next move! Way too many cooks in Kitchen situation! Jeremy needed to have his decisions trusted and they all needed more time! A squeeze and a bump is not abuse, it's an experienced mom trying to correct the only way she can. All moms know if baby's have formula before they get breast milk the baby will resist nursing and will then come around to it with routine, practice, and a hungry baby. Please trust Jeremy! There was Not enough time for any of that to happen guys! I still say there are plenty of opportunities to coach new moms or moms that have no experience and to being better moms to their own babies. Just a few thoughts hoping to encourage. ***Please get Patricia outta there, she must be so afraid 😳

I like the show but it bothers me they say they are the “largest rescue in the world” when there are several that are considerably bigger. Monkey Island in Peru has more than 600 monkeys and at least 2 orangutan rescues in Indonesia and Malaysia are a lot bigger. I don’t understand why they have to say that when I have no doubt they know that is not true. I appreciate what these places do and love watching what they do no mater what size they are so it seems so unnecessary. It makes me wonder what else they are embellishing and detracts from my enjoyment because I wonder if all their “facts” are accurate.

You do realize this started filming in 1996? It was the largest rescue when it was released. The places you mentioned weren't around. Hell Pablo Escobar was killed the same year so I doubt Peru was even a travel destination. Shit they were sending emails 2 episodes ago with dial up.

From what I’ve learned, Jim is dead. He died in 2007, so these videos are pre-2007. I’m sure they’ve learned a lot & have changed a lot in the past 15+ years.

Leave that baby orangutan 🦧 with its mother!!! She’s trying to be a really good mom and she will eventually be able to feed her baby as you think she should. She’s not aggressive and of course your getting on her nerves because your in the cage with her trying to manage everything she is doing!! Let her be the mom she knows how to be . She’ll get it right!! I do appreciate you watching them very close but to take her baby is wrong and your giving her so much more stress! That’s not right you are men and have no ideal what it takes and how long it takes with a lot of patients and trying to cope with her child. Leave them alone please she will show you all something over night…👍

Thats not her baby. They are hoping she will be a surrogate mother to the baby. I think they know more about what to do than you do. She was getting rough with the baby because she wouldn't stop crying. You want them to leave the baby with the mom over night, when it can't find a nipple and is constantly crying because she's hungry, then the hopeful mom is nervous and getting rough with the baby out of frustration???? That doesn't sound like a very good idea.

That’s not the real mom, They instead though it best to try a foster mom without even trying the real mom again.. I think they love the drama and hand rearing them..
