When I did my submarine training at HMS Dolphin our class had a Canadian and an Australian rating. We used to call the Aussie 'The Bronze God' as he was a first class sportsman and had a suntan that made us British look like we had just spent a year in a cave, as we were so pale compared to him. But I do remember how pale he looked on the day we did our SETT (submarine escape tank training) as the thought of 100 feet of water above him that he had to survive had his face looking whiter than a sheet. Of course we all survived the experience, including him. A great guy and a laugh a minute. I went on to serve on Oracle and later on Ocelot, which is now dry docked in Chatham dockyard as a museum exhibit.

I did my submarine training in 1965 at HMS Dolphin and there were both Australians and Canadians in our class, probably others too. I've always maintained that Australia, New Zealand and Canada are our true friends and allies.

I was an ETS in the mid eighties. I did the 1002 radar course at Platypus. the 1002 was common to the Oberon's and the Fremantle class Patrol boats. I'm not sure if there was an update in there as well.

I got accepted into the Navy in 1983 as a writer, I had to wait 8 months before a job came up. Didn't join as writers aren't needed on submarines. Had no idea once ' in ' you can change. Still remember coming out of Defence recruiting in Flinders Lane feeling 7ft tall and so proud.

I know that it's a long, long way to travel from Australia but Canada has preserved two of her O Boats as museum ships ... HMCS Ojibwa and Onondaga. ... for those of you who are interested.

An interesting show revealing that Australia has included Submarines in the RAN for around one hundred years. An early adapter of undersea defence.

One of them launched a successful simulated attack against the USN Independence Aircraft carrier in 1992. I think. Up near the the Great Barrier Reef. It was talked about on a series on Submarines on the ABC in the 1990’s.

Thank you for this. Lets hope the new nuclear submarines can be delivered on time and on budget and become as significant as the Oberon was to our maritime and national history.

I trained at Plats and then went to sea as a part 3. All I can remember is being sworn by at spotty kids with 'two dads' surnames and Toorak accents.

One of the highlights of my childhood, going to Station Pier to visit the RAN ships also these U-boats. What a pity visits are curtailed. It would help recuritment to bring back these visits. Great memories.

I'm looking for a book that covers the secret operations of the RAN in the Cold War like the operations in Shanghai (1993) and Saigon (1967 I think, Vietnam anyways) as well as the Kirov and the Russian SSN stuff.

There is not one. The exploits of the Oberon Class Submarines (2 in particular) and a number of surface ships will take at LEAST another decade before they can be written about in any detail. The operations still have too much potential to compromise Australia’s national interests.

A piece of advice for your audio technician, they should be muting mics of non-speakers, the underlying latent nasal breathing sound throughout was extremely off putting. This ruined what was an otherwise interesting and engaging video.
