I used to do something with stereo class AB amps way back in the late 80s that worked fairly well. 2 Alpine 3514s, RCA y-connectors and a "noise isolator", basically a stereo pair of isolation transformers. Reverse the inputs of one of the transformers and voila, same signal, 180° apart.

I used to do this with my old Specialty Sony amps. And I would use the Crossfire rca bridging modules. Worked like a champ. The bridging modules were for the old cfa amps.

I remember back in the day (well early 2000s) I had bought a Maxxsonics Maxx-link 100 or something like that, it was a little box that basically changed phase for non bridgeable amps to strap them together. It allowed you to do 5 pairs of amps, gave you 1 centralized crossover network to use instead of using each amps own, and a remote bassknob with clipping indicators, as well as a built in 40hz test/tune switch for dialing in the amps. iirc you could even link multiple maxxlinks together.. I think that was really the only good product I remember them offering that wasn't just run of the mill product.

Hey BiG T my homie that I never met😃 I just wanted to shake your hand from afar and say thank you for making an amp that blew my expectations away brother! The E400.4 four channel amplifier is the first amp out of the 6 I’ve purchased and returned this fall to winter season in search of a quiet amp, in terms of noise interference being my focus here. A little back story here, I got tired of seeing my surf board jl jx360/4 class ab amp floating around my trunk, it never was mounted in this car because it was never meant to be my permanent solution for obvious reasons and it’s a couple sports car so I wanted it to remain light as possible and also class ab gets super hot especially in the summer months. Fast forward to present day, about 5 months ago I began searching for a replacement amplifier to take place of that jl once and for all, and my goal was to find something that has a much smaller compact form factor. I had to find out the hard way, that fortunately that surf board jl amp that I purchased new unknowingly over a decade ago is by far the best sounding and quietest amplifier I’ve owned so far till date!!! It’s sad that it ain’t even anything that special lol but what I discovered by now is that all these class D amplifiers I’m tried are big disappointments. I’ve tried 6 different major popular brands and all of them left me with either wanting more to be desired and they all had crazy amounts of alternator engine whine? And they are all louder idling. The hissing noise of when the stereo is just powered on but the music isn’t being played is noticeably louder on all the class d amps I tried so far including yours. To put into perspective my jl idles at 33db using a handlheld sound meter on my system and yours was the closest in all of my testing actually at 35db. At full volume the jl was 41dv and yours 43to44! The loudest of the bunch was a popular amp brand whos big in car audio and anodized blue lol I won’t throw names out but it was by far the worst sounding and loudest noise floor starting at 41db and maxing out at 50db. That’s like nearly twice as audible it was hiss City with that jalopy. Also in this line up included a well known brand Steg made in Italy, I also did some testing with a few other contenders but all of them picked up a whine that wasn’t present before when I had the jl amp connected on my system so I was using it as my control during my testing of all these new amps basically I came down to the final conclusion it’s something to do with my source unit but I was like wtf something’s gotta give I’ll surely have I find an amp that’s not going to whine right ? YES INEEEDD DAMORE ENGINEERING FOR THE WIN DUDEEEE😊 SORRY FOR THE LENGTHY AND SEEEINLY ENDLESS STORY TONY AND KZbinRS! But if you happen to read this and any of it makes any sense to y’all then give yourself a Pat on the back because you saved my cars audio system. Ii was going down a rabbit hole man😂 my choices were to keep spending money hopelessly or just using the jl amp and then if that dies then what ? I would have been back to square one. I’m so happy the e400.4 is small and has a good defensive system against my cars bloody signal interference thank you for this gem keep them coming bro 💪🏼

Awsome stuff man, I’ve been installing these amplifiers alot on underseat truck systems and they have this dynamic punch that I love about them.. I recently installed 2 of them and Y split left rca to one amplifier and right rca to second amplifier, and gain matched each amplifier independently. If I were to use the hlc2 to full bridge them, what will be the difference going full bridge? The Subs now are driven at 1 ohm. New subs will be driven at 2 ohm.

Two amplifiers driven at 1 ohm vs two amplifiers bridged into 2 ohms will be the same total power. Its really only a useful thing to do if someone needed all of the power of the amplifier pair onto one voice coil. i.e. running 4 amplifiers on one dual voice coil subwoofer

I bought two 400.4's and two 1500.1's back on May 1, 24. Is there a huge difference in total power output by running the amps bridged to 2 ohms versus separate @ 1ohm each? Or is it more of a flexibility of installation thing? I was planning on running them separately to one Sundown SA-12 D2 Classic each. If you're sending out already modded HLC-2's, then I'd like to give it a try. I appreciate the lesson. You make it way easier to comprehend with the lab setup.

Is the LOC acting purely as a line driver? Wouldnt this work by inverting the phase of one amp without the LOC?

It would if there were a way to invert the phase of the input on these amplifiers. The only other way would be to use the high level inputs on both amplifiers and 180 one of the amps there.

@@kyleamorristhat’s what I wondered too. If making an RCA cable with an inverted polarity on one channel would work. I assume input voltage will be halved from normal (by only using one channel input and not being pair summed) but was wondering if this would work as well.

Just this year i had an epiphany when i realized that all mono blocks are Mono because they are half bridge and all full bridge are essentially 2 channel bridged internally or "strapped" internally. Which also means all mono half bridged can be strapped but you need a way to flip and sync the AC waveform on the output. It also explains why full bridge amps have power issues, it's because you're essentially using 1 supply for two amps internally.

Can you show how to bridge a 700.4 and a 400.4? It's not in the manual. Do I need to use all 4 rca inputs or just 2 of them? Which ones?

Can you tell me what exactly the "strapping cables" that you see on amps actually do? Sometimes it's an rca cable and sometimes RJ12, etc... As an example, I've got two Rockford T10001BD from 2006. I plan to use a bd Sync cable to connect them. Supposedly it allows the independent frequency carrier generators to be synchronized. Is that not needed in this example your showing? Maybe the sync cable is what allows the master amp's crossover, gain and bass knob to work for both amps?

On those amplifiers the RCAs used with the preamp output of the master amp into the input of the slave amp, plus the appropriate switch settings lets the master crossover, gain, and bass knob to work for both amps. The sync cable synchronizes the switching of the supplies for the most stable operation. Some amps need it, some don't care.

There is an amplifier that I have drooled over for ages. The Steg K2.04 It is a 2ch, there is a class AB and a class D version. It is very powerful (330x2 @ 4 ohm, 1,400 wrms x2 @ 1 ohm) 2,800 wrms BTL 2 ohm. This 2 channel has a feature called "serialpower" and you can use 2 of these 2 channel amps together, 4 channels into a single 5000 wrms 4 ohm channel. HOW?? Do you think they actually run all of the channels in series, like a battery? If so, what about phase? Would each channel be in phase? I don't get it. I completely understand how 2 channels bridge with the voltage potential difference, but I desperately want to know how they do 4 channels... Maybe it is 2 amps BTL then both in parallel together, but I always thought parallel didn't increase power, only same power at higher ohm load, like that would make it 2800w at 4 ohm

There are some amplifiers that have been designed so that the outputs can be run in parallel or series. So 2 outputs in series forms a differential amplifier AKA: H-Bridge, Full Bridge, BTL. 2 outputs in parallel is the same as one output with twice as many transistors for improved current output capabilities. While some others, like this Texas Instruments IC Amplifier can do both. So it can be run as 4 channels "single ended aka 1/2 bridge", 2 channels as BTL, or 1 channel as PBTL they call it. I thought this type of connection, in this video, was referred to as strapping. Where you have two amps on the same voice coil, one amp out of phase, etc... Then bridging, when using two amps, involves each amp driving it's own voice coil or group of subs. Then the amps are carefully gain matched. In this scenario there is no change of phase and the amp outputs are not connected. Is my terminology wrong?

Bridging and strapping involve connecting the amp outputs together. Running two amps to individual voice coils is running two amps to individual voice coils and doesn’t have a name. 😂 A third and uncommon method is parallel connection. This is really only done properly at the circuit level as you basically need an engineering degree to understand the reasons for doing so and how to implement.

Actually.. the car audio world may find this as shocking as when I told them (including Rockford Fosgate when I went to work there in 2000) that *Subsonic Filter* isn't a thing. Here goes, Strapping amplifiers is technically incorrect. 99.9% of car audio amplifiers are NOT STRAPPABLE. A fair amount of them are BRIDGEABLE though. No Rockford amp that I am aware of is "Strappable" Bridging amplifiers is putting 2 amplifiers' outputs in series. Speaker connects to one output from each amplifier and the 2 amplifiers are out of phase with each other, as I showed here in this video. The result is double the voltage to the speaker which results in 4x the power at the same impedance. Strapping amplifiers is something that very few amplifiers are capable of. Some McIntosh home amps and some pro audio amps can do this. Strapping is when 2 amplifiers are connected in parallel and are fed the same signal. The result is the same voltage, and thus the same power output. The advantage is they can drive a load that is 1/2 the impedance that they would normally be able to do on their own. What would be the practical application in as far as a setup you couldn't accomplish with the amps separate? You've not increased wattage over the two amps...but, you have increased control such as the damping factor at the sacrifice of lower impedance usability. The only practical use I can see for this setup is if a person already has a particular amp, but requires/wants twice the output power, i.e., more boom. That person could then purchase another identical amp and use this setup. Sorry, it's the engineer in me...always asking what's the practical application. Of course, I build things all the time and then realize those things are of no use. LoL!! But..that's just me. 😊

I dont even get how theres 100 volts when like im at 14 volts. Man electric stuff never makes sense to me. Somehow I always end up with massive stereos and I can do some of that. Doesnt mean i get this amp stuff here. I just get expensive amps and decent subs and fuckin install that shyt or have it installed. Usually a mix of both.

Be cool if you developed a line of amps and external power supplies for home 2 channel hifi. Not sure why no one does. It appears that most of the new tech in hifi comes from car audio anyway. lol. They want thousands for a class D ICE module amp that makes 100-200 watts. Its a fing joke!
