Pam Stenzel spoke twice at my high school while I was there. She was very screamy and so over the top that literally dozens of kids pretended to be sick so they could leave the auditorium. She definitely made it sound like having any kind of sexual contact would leave you covered with syphilitic lesions while dying of AIDS. It's been like 25 years and I'm still pissed that my school district paid for that while I sat all day in a classroom full of asbestos.

The sad thing is that since this episode came out, more research has revealed that, more than anything else, sexual education protects kids. An accurate knowledge of the parts of the body, even at ages as young as 5 or 6, helps kids to identify if they're being abused and to tell a trusted adult. Parents who deny their children good sex education want their kids to be susceptible to abuse and assault.
@historianKelly6 ай бұрын
When I was 8yo, my parents bought us a 4 volume set of booklets (plus a "parents' answer guide" that I was the only person in our family to read) called, "The Life Cycle Library." It was 100% factual information for children on approaching & getting through puberty - for both sexes - navigating the world around you mentally, physically, and emotionally. My parents were 31 & 32 when I was 8, so I think they felt ill-equipped to handle these conversations with my then-11yo brother, let alone me & my younger sister. I read all 5 volumes, cover to cover. The end result is, at 59 now & post-menopausal, I was never pregnant, I contracted one treatable STD in college while in a long-term relationship, and otherwise had no sexual health concerns my entire life. I understood birth control, sexuality, what was fair & not fair in dealing with the opposite sex, and that there may be no such thing as "normal," but there's plenty of, "that's definitely NOT normal!" I also learned that I had agency as a young woman, and that saying No was my right, because my body is MY body. The most stupendously, ridiculously stupid reason the abstinence only crowd gives for not teaching this is they don't want to give kids, "ideas " No one needs to teach ANY mammal on this planet about sex. It's a 100% completely natural act. Mankind knew how to have sex before we knew how to create language! We knew how to have sex before we could start fires! We knew how to have sex before we stopped living in trees! It's not a taught subject! What does need to be taught is sexual health & the emotional literacy that should accompany it. I'm firmly convinced that it's the suppression of all this that creates sexual dysfunction. We might have less sex crimes if they *did* teach more sexual health.

I remember a story where a young girl had been taught alternative names for her body parts by her parents. She was sexually assaulted and told her friend when she was at school (she was too young to understand what had happened). A teacher overheard but because the girl was using different names, the teacher didn't realise what she was talking about and so didn't report it. That's why I'll always advocate for teaching children the proper names for body parts.

I'm a historian. I began to study History before I even entered kindergarten - no lie, my mom was such a history buff, she taught me to read on my own by age 3, and I knew I wanted to be historian by age 5 because I saw the power in controlling a nation's narrative. I would NEVER teach History on a K-12 level, because it's sheer propaganda. I want to make it clear that this isn't limited to the USA, every nation does this. They use their compulsory education History courses as government-sponsored patriotism-building classes with slightly factual information. Secondly, American teachers are required to Major in EDUCATION and only Minor in the discipline in which they'll teach. A Minor is about 6 courses. Contrast that with my undergraduate course load as a History Major: I was required to take a total of 34 courses to graduate. Of those 34, 32 counted towards my History Major (my college didn't have a core curriculum the year I started, so I was able to load up on courses in my Major). My Masters degree is in History, not Education, and my PhD courses were all History except one, which was my corollary course, Sociology, because I'm a Social Historian (the only reason I'm not a working professor is that I became disabled while working on my dissertation & was forced to stop). Your History teachers were bad because they aren't required to be good, because they aren't required to be historians, because real historians aren't willing to teach government-sponsored propaganda. Also, let me guess, your History teacher was also either 1) the P.E. teacher, or 2) the football coach? Many schools advertise for Social Studies/History teachers who are also Football coaches, or Football coaches who can also teach SS/History -- the teaching being the less important part of the job. As a typical historian, I'm not terribly interested in conspiracy theories, but I do believe in this one: no one in the US government wants children to actually learn US history. They're scared that you'll suddenly ask for stuff, like rights you already possess, or perhaps progress, if you know truths. That's why your History teachers sucked & will continue to suck. My niece's 6th grade History teacher actually told her that I, her mother's sister, who was actively pursuing my doctorate in US History at the time, was teaching her, "irrelevant history," as if he was the sole arbiter of relevance, and his little BA was equivalent of my education & knowledge. I told her to tell him I was willing to tutor him any time he wanted to learn US history. I don't think she delivered my message & my sister was afraid I'd jeopardize my niece's grades if I went to the school & confronted him, or I would have. If you learn anything worthwhile in K-12 History class, count yourself lucky, because it was dumb luck.

What I've always loved SO MUCH about "abstinence only" education is the ASSUMPTION that the preferred state of adulthood MUST BE MARRIAGE. I am 59 years old. My mom told me that I announced to her when I was *8* that I never wanted to get married, and 51 years later, I want to go back in time and ask 8yo me for more words of wisdom! I do not even use the term, "pre-marital sex." IT'S JUST SEX. Unless at least one of the people involved is already married, then it's marital sex, extra-marital sex, or a migraine. I've been happily single all my life & definitely not a virgin, and couldn't care less how people judge me. I've also never been divorced, never cheated on a spouse or even a boyfriend, and I took birth control seriously because I knew my limitations. I do not believe in double-standards, and I refuse to feel badly about my path in life just because it didn't meet some imaginary & arbitrary standard used to shame people for doing human things. The same people who shame others over sex also glorify: state-sponsored murder; guerilla warfare against the ob/gyn profession; hatred of non-conformists; persecution of self-expression; independence of more than half the population. Why would they matter to me????

I rarely comment, but I had to say something here. Two condom demonstrations in the sex ed videos, the one with the sock and yours, have made a BIG mistake. When you put on a condom, you have to grab the tip and keep holding it while you unroll the condom. Not doing it (you) or letting go of the tip (sock guy) increases the chances that sperm would spill out of the condom or the contom would break. Also, one should always check the expiration date on the package and properly take the condom out. Please consult a sex ed instructor if you make another video :)
