"Sorry" to headphone users: Most of the footage is shot with a GoPro and it seems that this camera picks up a very low tone from the Engine Room. Cannot filter that out. Will look for a solution.
ENGLISH (Nederlands hieronder):
Years ago I lived on a sailing cutter and if the wind was NW 6bft, then that was a fine wind to sail with that ship at sea. The wind pressed her into the water and one board one had a completely different experience of the waves than is the case with a trawler such as Lady Liselot. So with that in mind, I thought it would be no problem to also take Lady Liselot out at sea. Sandbanks all around me, current against, 25 knots of wind and no stabilizers.
Have a look yourself and find out if that was a clever decision.
Be sure to watch to the end for more of this comical sailing guy.
I hope you enjoy this one, leave me a comment (I would love to hear from you) and as always, thank you for your support - much love to you all

I had to smile when you turned back 😊. My boat NORSELA was a Colvic Watson Mortorsailer with a Ketch Rig. Her hull was 34 ft but 11 mts OA the bowsprit. In a force 5-6 I would have had all the sails up and going well however on one occasion I just and only just, made it into Den Helder before a Force 9 hit! That was frightening. Cheers Michael

Yep, when I lived on my Ketch Cutter (see kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYjKgnZ-bs-qeLM) Wind was no problem what so ever. Also the deliveries I did with the racing yacht, We even had special sails for delivery and others for the race, I often went full. But as a liveaboard I do not miss the mono hull sailing boats anymore.

You barely broke your posture and hardly turned your attention away towards the chair and other items sliding items in the cockpit. Also, many people would try to push onwards but a smart captain knows when to throw in the towel. Keep up the great work on these videos. I appreciate the quality content you provide.

Our 34' Mainship is particulary sensitive to boat wakes and get get severely rocked by them, especially when a big sport fishermen gets impatient in a channel and speeds by us, passing close by just as it's making it's maximum wake while climbing up on a plane (and burning as much fuel in the process as we do for our entire trip). So even on a calm day, we secure all loose items on the boat before departing. You never know what waves you might encounter.

I can image. In the 18 month prior to this boat trip I only sailed Lady Liselot through canals and waterways. Even in situation as you describe with 'neighbours' causing some waves, there was not much damage done, but after this trip the 'what to store when heading for sea' has grown. BTW Good to have you 'on board'.!

Thank you for the compliment, Willem. I think I have figured out the 'format' I share in my video's.: Sail along with Henk-Jan whilst enjoying the practice of boating. I am not much into 'showing the environment', so I try to be as authentic as much as possible. The downside is that every video shows the actions one must take before or whilst boating, but as you see on the number of subscribers (I started december '21) many like it.

Just found your channel and subscribed. Really enjoying your videos. I can see from the comments you have learned to 'always' stow everything away securely, even if that means reorganizing and manufacturing new stowage's. I'd seen in your other videos and had been concerned your helmsman's seat wasn't secured down. This is a must, not only to prevent it from harming you or damaging the boat, but also to give you somewhere safe to sit whilst the boat rolls. I hope you have remedied this. As said, great video and kudos for uploading it 🙂

Very interesting video indeed, for which I congratulate the captain. Captain really knows how to handle the boat singlehanded. One may wonder whether it was wise to leave Terschelling going out to sea with prevailing NW/5-6 Bf, knowing the choppy waters in that area. The Dutch-English of the captain is very funny to hear.

I agree Alex, but my former boat was a longkeeler saling ketch cutter and she enjoyed NW6. But that was 20 years ago and I have 'forgotten' some things.
@MVLadyLiselot
@MVLadyLiselot 2 жыл бұрын

I am so sorry to see the contents of your saloon scattered around the floor. I have experienced this several times and the noise it makes is quite distressing. Good decision to turn back and tidy up and prevent further damage. You need a young lady to start making things secure as the disruption starts - apart from the fact that it must be quite lonely cruising on your own. Lady Liselot appears to be a very well appointed vessel Skipper and I was particularly interested to see your extensive use of CCTV around the vessel.

Hi John. The Netherlands is a country bases on regulations (it seems) and one is to have a 360 view. Securing for sea is more demanding and exacting than securing for the sheltered waters and canals? This should give you the opportunity to inspect all movable gear, with a focus on those items that are in machinery spaces where if they break loose can do damage to hydraulic lines or delectate electronics/sensors/data relays etc. I once lost my steering system due to a large paint drum striking the main hydraulic line to my steering motor (this was in a tropical storm in the Bismarck Sea). I almost lost the vessel having to steer on main engines and causing me to increase the speed over the ground. I sacked (dismissed) my Executive Officer the next week!
@MVLadyLiselot
@MVLadyLiselot 2 жыл бұрын
Yes Joseph, you are right. When I step on board the boats that only drive the inland canals, the salon looks like a normal house with all kind of loose stuff everywhere. on Lady Liselot it is already a lot more tidy, largely because as a 'man alone' I don't like all those knick knacks and messes. Most sailors are used to setting up their ship so that everything stays intact. For me this was the first time I encountered rougher water and so I learned that I had to add something to my "waht to stow and store when heading for sea" list. Apart from that... the video is just like in the movies: the editor ultimately determines what you see. It wasn't too bad, because the engine room had been cleaned up, in the sleeping quarters everything was on the bed and rolled up in blankets, in the kitchen the overhang was secured, but only in the wheelhouse there was still too much loose, as you could see. Can imagine that in a precarious (and professional) setting like you describe, you have to be very alert to what can be lying around.

Great Video, and I am relieved to see that you didn't fall or hurt yourself...... and now you can enjoy a dinner of "sailor's self scrambling eggs" :) With regard to the "manoeuvring to Port" message misunderstanding, I can only imagine how difficult it must be changing from speaking English to the camera then speaking Dutch over the radio and then back to English for the video.

NW6 between the Wadden Islands turns out to be a bad sea state. There were no crests on the water, but the space between the sandbanks and the islands makes the sea very choppy. Once back in port, the locals said "yes, we could have told you that." Although I had gone through and checked my checklist 'what to store before I go to sea', the sea still managed to find the loose things. I could have also removed the video material, but it seemed like an instructive journey.

@MVLadyLiselot
@MVLadyLiselot 2 жыл бұрын
