S2/E8; Why do so many houses on this Dutch river have boatlifts?

English: (Nederlandse ondertiteling hieronder)
On December 23, 2021 I sailed from the city Krimpen aan den IJssel in The Netherlands via the river called Hollandsche IJssel to the city Gouda. And while I have often sailed this route, I thought it might be nice to name a specific part of this route: The boat lifts of the houses that are located on this river.
Be sure to watch to the end for more of this comical sailing guy.
I hope you enjoy this one, leave me a comment (I would love to hear from you) and as always, thank you for your support - much love to you all
Nederlands:

Welkom!!

Watching these videos always make me realise how incredibly hard work it is to sail (motor/drive - sorry no idea which is it?) a yacht single-handedly, exhausting just to watch, not surprised that you’re tired by the end of the day. Daily laugh check, beautiful countryside check, after all these years learned the correct pronunciation of Gouda check……although when you passed under the first bridge was a bit nerve racking …thank you for another fun video:)

Sweet words, my dear. I must admit that there are tours were I hardly can film addition (b-roll) footage because I have to pay attention to the traffic around me. Especially in places with a VTC (vessel traffic coordination).

@MVLadyLiselot
@MVLadyLiselot 2 жыл бұрын

Henk-Jan, fantastic video as always! The river tour was a spécial treat. I really enjoyed the conversations you had with the bridge operators and am impressed with their accommodating Ladyliselot and allowing her to follow the barge through one of the locks. Everyone was so polite. The scenery along the river banks was interesting too, especially the motor vehicles paralleling the river and the residential homes integrated with the industrial buildings. And of course your lighthearted narration made the trip memorable and entertaining.

I like that there's no "boat tour" video and we get to learn about it bit by bit. I like the slow pace of the shot progression with the intensity of having to observe 360 degrees of safety. And I really like seeing The Netherlands again, I have such nostalgia for that place and people.

In the 90's I made trips from the US to Amsterdam and Apeldoorn for my work. Amsterdam is a beautiful city, even in the rain. I spent lots of hours in bruin cafés just watching people, especially in Cafe Pleinzicht, which seems to still be there. The entire country, everywhere I went, was very organized and livable, with cities friendly to pedestrians. And the Dutch people, who seemed very formal and direct at first, are very warm and very funny when you get to know them, And even though they like to complain about a lot of different things, they seem like a happy and positive people who are genuine and honest. My colleague Rinko and I used to conflict lot about our work, but once we met in person, we became very close friends, and now I miss those conflicts dearly. So if you could ever be homesick for a place you never lived, for me it is Amsterdam, in the spring, in the rain, on foot, half understanding the language, looking in the next shop for beer, cheese, and chocolate.

@@upstairsdave Wow. You nailed it. I lived in Amsterdam for a couple of years as a liveaboard of my sailing cutter and I could not have subscribed it better then you just did. When I moved back to land (the girl won...) I went back to Amsterdam at least once a week. Just cruising in my convertible car from North to South for an hour, just to hear, feel and smell the city. I still often go there. Did not create any footage from that. Feels almost personal to do so. Thank you for your warm words. Welcome abaoard!

"spaced pilings" is also a nice word, and "Fender Board" is simple indeed. In one of my video's I talk about my kitchen and I am looking for the word "gimbal stoove". The funny thing is: I have a gimbal on my camera. LOL

@@MVLadyLiselot Regarding the rails that hold your pan in place - i see the term "fiddles" used to describe a feature used to keep things in place while at sea. Thus, a raised edge on the counter is a "fiddled" counter; you have improvised a "fiddled" hob which may also be gimbaled (as it surely would have been on your sailing vessels). Not sure if this was posted yesterday but if I am repeating myself, apologies. I wondered why I didn't see any Christmas lights in the homes along the river (or in "Lady Liselot"). Is this not a tradition in the Netherlands? In the UK, most people decorate their homes and businesses early in December through to the New Year; some would say some of those are decorated to excess. OH, and in English, a car goin backwards is reversing (re verse ing). Happy sailing.
@MVLadyLiselot
@MVLadyLiselot 2 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh Reverse. So that's why there is an "R" on the shift lever of my car! Do you know how the plank/board is called I talked about? A "fender board". hahaha So simple, but the moment I am recording it sometimes (really?) happens that my brain stops working. I must admit I did not see any X-mas decoration also. Yes it was uploaded yesterday, but it was shot in the 23rd of December. I don't have Christmas decorations because I think it's too much hassle, and it doesn't bring any extra fun as far as I'm concerned. See you next time!

Hello Christoph, thank you for the compliment. Actually it is not that dufficult as you saw. Just practise a lot and one can (easily) drive most boats single handed. You must understand what the boat does, have enough fenders out, and a middle bolard with a line. BUT, boats where the distance between captains chair and outdoors are 'a long walk' (many boats with indoor steering only) are very difficult to drive single handed and one always needs crew. Boats like mine are rare. ;-) But when you search for 'trawler' you will find quite some modells for sale. Please subscribe and you will be informed about new uploads.

Hi Trevor! My Perkins 6.354 are from 1980, and there is no 'Actual Fuel Burn' Gauge added. And (as always) also the fuel gauge is not 100% reliable of 250liter vs 280 liter. ;-) But I do log how often I fill up my 400 liter daytank. So I then know roughfly: so many hours drive, = 200 liters used. That learns me that adding a 2nd engine cost 100% fuel burn (at least 10-15liter in a non-current water way @ € 1.85/liter as I write this) per hour extra, but only giving 25% more speed. So the calculation is simple. I only use two engines for maneuvring near bridges and in port. I run them seperately to keep the running hours in balance.

I have "Velvet" drives and the manual states: Freewheeling: "It has been determent bij tests and practical experience that all Velvet Drive Marine Transmissions can be freewheeled without risking damage in sailing or trolling applications. Caution should be taken to be sure that proper oil level is maintained during freewheeling as well as normal running. @MVLadyLiselot
@MVLadyLiselot 2 жыл бұрын
Hello David, glad to hear that you liked it. Yhe speed limit depends on the area. In the Rotterdam area it is 13 km/h (in the inland we do everything in km/h, at sea we talk about knts)but on the water, a national maximum speed of 20 km/h applies to fast motor boats, unless otherwise indicated locally. There are many places where the speed is different. Small ships are often allowed to sail faster on wide rivers and large lakes. Also opening hours for locks and brudges depend on the area, and the season. In wintertime I often have to request a bridge opening 24h in advance because there is no operator stationed due to lack of traffic. We have an online system in The Netherlands for that.
