Thanks for showing us how good of this pdl 120 kayak battling rough water like that. i also own one I’m glad I did. One year later I’ve decided to upgrade to electric motor Minkota c30 with 100 amp lipo battery. After 7 hours of trolling taking chances battery died and was out 2.5 miles wind pick up 12-15 mph water swell current was against me could not paddle back 😅. I called for help and a couple in their motor boat towed me back. I would of been okay if had my pedal system with me but left in my truck 😬. Think safety first trying to catch a fish is not worth dying for. Be Safe And Good Luck !

Wish they had changeable speeds like a 10 speed bike!That way you could cruise faster and change gears or depending on leg strength be able to change the gear ratio/prop pitch to pick up a little more speed.I know they have to design it for everyone to be able to pedal but to be able to customize it according to your liking for more speed would be great

Applying foot power UNDER WATER is a whole different ball game than rolling wheels on asphalt.

The shape of the haul, and the size of the prop they can fit is the limitation , not the speed of the prop.

LOL that’s exactly what I was thinking myself I have the same Peddle Drive I have the old town 120 PDL and if it had gears could you imagine.

@@howabouthetruth2157 youre prob right, but i think 2-3 speeds would still be a benefit
@howabouthetruth21573 жыл бұрын
@@Alniemi "Probably right"........I KNOW I'm right. Why do ya think power boats only have a single forward gear. And believe me, even a tiny 2 hp motor has tons more power than ANY human. And I guarantee you, someone in the kayak industry has already tried it......quietly, without anyone else knowing. Besides, the ONLY way you could have even "2 speeds" for peddles in a kayak, the other gear besides the normal gear would have to be geared even lower, and you would be peddling your ass off and hardly going anywhere. Trust me kid.........the boating industry in all it's forms has been around for a long long time, and your dream of "2 or 3 speeds" is totally out of the question. Water is NOT like wheels rolling along. There's FAR MORE resistance in water versus rolling on dry land.

I race OC-1 and OC-6 here in Hawaii. We live to race in the open ocean waves. Next time you’re in those conditions try to do a zig-zag route. Surf the waves for a bit at an angle inwards then trek back out in an angle then repeat. You’ll figure out how long you can surf before needing to head back out. You’ll technically travel more distance, but you’ll do it faster and more efficient saving energy. Great videos as always.

This is what people wanna see when doing research to buy a yak . On a flat day you can go out on anything but I wanted to see this thing handle some rough water . Good job bro . I’m convinced … I’m gonna do the 120 for storage space but I’m glad I found your video .

Hey Mark. Relaxing going through some old vids. I'm in my 120 Auto and honestly I don't think it's ever had water in it. I've been in some pretty rough condiition,, 20 mph plus, bay locations. Plenty of water over the front and plenty of splash. Nothing I could find in the hull. Love these kayaks. OldTown is an amazing Kayak. Top of the line.

Great job. Loved seeing it in the chop. I took the PDL out for a demo during a kayak demo. Only issue I had was with the bar on the seat that runs across the lower back area. It was digging into my lower back.

And someone told you in that thread that the seat wasn't attached correctly for the demo. The bar would not have been an issue had it been installed correctly. You were pretty negative for that demo. Seemed you wanted to find things wrong with the Topwater yak.

@@MDLRFishing never use well nuts , they do not hold things firmly , better to put a small 3 inch hole and hatch in the back and install a backing plate. Well nuts require a fairly large hole to be drilled , where as bolts with a backing plate is half that size.

Afternoon Mark, I am studying videos to determine what kayak I want. Today's question concerns the drive mechanism. For a person that has not developed any preference, would you recommend a bicycle type drive or something like the Outback? One note: I am 69 year old retiree if age makes any real difference. Skip....
@MDLRFishing5 жыл бұрын
To me the drive makes no difference unless you’re in shallow water. I’d recommend the Topwater 120 PDL or one of the Hobie Pro Anglers. The seats on all three make transitioning from seating to standing very easy.

Very interesting stuff, going above and beyond for your viewers. I've never tried a pedal-drive kayak, but I have to wonder why you didn't have your paddle in hand out there in the nasty chop. Wouldn't a paddle help keep you upright?
@MDLRFishing6 жыл бұрын
if I had the paddle in hand I wouldn’t have been able to control my rudder.
@jimking22996 жыл бұрын
OK, that makes sense. I forgot that if your feet are providing the propulsion, they can't be doing the steering too. I've never been in a yak with a rudder either. The video just gave me a bit of a queasy feeling because in my experience, the paddle is the whole key to power, stability and control in the rough stuff. Just weird to see yours sitting in the keeper.

Having worked in the Emergency Room for years , Ive seen a lot of unnecessary injuries and you have an obvious accident dangling from your chest . Flip your kayak over , try to haul yourself up on your kayak , and those sharp pointed scissors can EASILY flip around and stab you in the neck . Not a good idea to have anything that sharp flopping around . Be safe .

@howabouthetruth21576 жыл бұрын
I've been fishing Shimano almost exclusively since they got started way back around 1980 or soon after. Today, I am a 100% Lew's man........and not looking back. Best equipment I've ever used. ( Their pricier models from $140 and up, made only at the Korean plant, is where their best quality is......vs the China made. ) I'll put any $180 to $200 Lew's reel up against anything twice its price, both for performance and durability. Also, their customer support & service is hands down the best, barr none. All 8 of my Lew's baitcasters ( 4 Pro-G's, 2 Super Duty's, and 2 BB1 Pro's)...are well over 2 yrs old, and I fish hard, multiple times a week year round here in Florida. They perform as good as the day they were new. The ONLY problem I had was a recent failure of a clutch bearing ( anti-reverse ) in one of my Pro G's. The reel was far OUT of warranty......yet Lew's told me that clutch bearing HAD TO be defective from the start, because a clutch bearing should NOT fail like that within several years. THEY REPLACED IT & COMPLETELY SERVICED THE REEL FOR FREE, INCLUDING RETURN SHIPPING. I had this reel back ON THE WATER FISHING..........WITHIN 8 DAYS from the time I shipped it to them. I kid you not. Amazing. Lew's made a true believer out of me. You would be lucky if a reel even made it to the service dept within 8 days with any other brand.
