A very well written and acted comedy. Perhaps one of the best British comedies that can be enjoyed by all ages.

My family watched the second series (but had missed the first a few months earlier) on Sunday evenings Autumn 1984. We had some family friends round a few days before this Xmas episode, and they had never seen EDC before. We had that awkward pregnant pause when we were not sure if they'd actually like it. Within minutes they thought it one of the funniest shows ever written. I am one of life's Martin's rather its Paul's. This show demonstrated to subtle comic effect there is room for both types in this world. One of the greatest sitcoms ever written, and even better acting to boot.👍

Indeed. Penelope Wilton and Peter Egan weren't really known in those days but as we know they went on to be very famous film actors, quite rightly.

I thought this was the biggest pile of old tommyrot when it came out, now I have the time to actually understand the thought behind it, lessons to be learned from the characters it is really funny. Strange how you change with time. Good writers, brilliant casting, superb entertainment. All six characters feed each other and the storyline superbly.

Martin, Anne, Paul, Howard, Hilda... who is the sixth? 🧐

I think as you go through life, you discover that there actually are real Martins, Pauls, Howards and Hildas in this world, which makes the send-up even funnier. I was in my late twenties when it was running; I thought it was brilliant from the get-go, and Richard Briers absolutely nailed it with his portrayal of Martin.

It was an incredible comedy. I can see now that the comedy was in the characters, mainly Martin and Paul. In other words , Paul would metaphorically cast a line, and Martin would bite. In hindsight, it was brilliant. Of only I'd had the benefit of this, during testing times throughout my life.

yeah because the comedy actors are shit these days & the writers are even worse, it's all canned laughter & stupid slap-stick but people seem to love it?! we will never ever again see the likes of ever decreasing circles , Steptoe & son, rising damp, porridge, only fools & horses, black adder, The young one's, I'm Alan partridge, dads army, faulty towers, just good friends, it aint half hot mum, open all hours, some mothers do av em, the likely lads & the good life.

I love this sitcom. It is the best and Richard Briers was the best. Our world is missing him. Penelopy Wilton was gorgeous.

I had such a crush on Ann back then, even though I was only about 7 at the time and I could sense the sexual tension between Ann and Paul.

Just realised that the dynamic between Martin and Paul owes a lot to the film 'The Odd Couple' with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon.

Arw...that was a really great moment between Howard, Martin and Paul around the 5:00 to 5:45 mark...if I was in the same sort situation I think I would do it just the same way Paul did! Lovely to include Martin in that way...its the difference between this era of sitcom and ours in that they make something of the more tragic 'dark' side of Martins character...but they don't need to over-emphasise it like a lot of modern era sitcoms and they can make room to breathe for lighter, more human, moments...even for the likes of Martin!

I love this episode and have seen it many times, it's the first time I have noticed that Howard, Hilda and Paul had coats, hats and scarfs on to go out and play football in whereas Ann had some very short shorts........
