This has been my life along with many women I know. I'm 58 but from decades ago, "hide your crazy" was a regular non-stop belief. The words "I'm fine" become second nature and roll off your tongue without even thinking about it. It's not a great way to grow up. "Never let them see you cry, never let them see you sweat and never let them see you flinch". It's exhausting.

One of the things I love about Miranda Lambert is she has no problem showing in an 8th strength but she also has no problem saying hey this is me this is who I am and you know it doesn't matter what somebody else says I'm not going to hide it. Those of us brought up in the 60s and 70s heard this a lot. It was changing between our parents generation and ours. I read a bunch of letters my mom wrote to my Grammy when she was dating my dad. After I stopped laughing I asked why on earth she married him. I always thought she didn't see who he really was and the letters showed that was not true. Her reasoning was it was what I was supposed to do. If you dated for a while then he proposed you got married. Since I've said no to more than one person she obviously taught me different. But I had serious trouble trying to explain why I was terrorizing my neighbors when I moved to CA for college. People really didn't get it when I said that if I went for a walk and didn't smile or say hi to every person who was out in their yard by the time I got back home my mom had already gotten several calls about me being rude and unfriendly. In CA if I said hi they ran inside like I was threatening them. This song is basically about the next generation from my parents where a breakup was a big deal and people got dramatic instead of keeping it private like they were taught.

Yep, I remember in the 80s I was having a $500 custom hoop skirt dress made for prom and had put down the deposit a few days earlier...then I found out my boyfriend had gotten drunk and slept with someone else. I was so embarrassed to go back and tell the ladies to keep my deposit but I couldn't have the dress made because I had decided not to go to prom. (It wasn't my prom) I will never forget how happy those ladies were. They kept saying "we are so proud of you for not putting up with that" and gave me all my money back. It never even crossed my mind to forgive him. It showed what a difference the two generations were.

I've seen the message passed to some many women. Just keep smiling. Don't give anyone cause to gossip. The church I use to attend, I worked part time for a woman whose husband came home and announced he didn't love her, he was leaving her, and he wanted a divorce. She told me she shared with the woman of the church at the monthly women's dinner (thinking she would get some emotional support) and the assistant preacher's wife told her that under no circumstances could she allow him to leave. The lady explained that it wasn't a matter of what she wanted, he wanted to go but this preacher's wife went on and on about finding a way to force him to stay. Period. Make him stay. Because otherwise people would 'talk' about how the marriage failed and how it was usually the wife's fault. When she related the conversation to me, I nearly died. What make it super crazy as the preacher's wife in question had her own issues, namely her three children who were always running wild and getting into trouble she had to try and coverup. It's a sad fact this song is relatable to so many people.

My momma used to tell me something along the lines of this when I was growing up. It used to infuriate me but as an adult I do see where she was coming from. Often when you want to be taken seriously as a woman you can't be "emotional" or you'll be dismissed out of hand. If you're seen as being too angry or upset you'll get called "crazy" and be told to calm down before you're even listened to. I'm not saying it's right, because it absolutely is not, but it has been my experience.

Miranda grew up in the same area of Texas that I did and that kind of upbringing is very prevalent throughout the area. My grandmother was very this way. Never let anyone see anything but a smile on your face. I would actually hazard a guess from the 2 songs so far that your theme is something along the lines of having to do with public perception

100% the "don't let him see you cry" rule is very common. I was born in '98 and don't consider my parents 'old' so it's pretty astounding when you realize how that old rule has been passed down for so long. I think when I look back at female history, one of the only ways many women had any measure of power is by maintaining face. My own grandmother, born in 1929, was taken away against her own will and "hospitalized" for depression where they straped a mask over her face with a smile on it and forced her to stare at her reflection for 15 minute intrivals "because a proper wife is a happy wife". She had postpartum depression. Yeah. Idk, I just think about that when I listen to this song. How our tears were weaponized against us so the survival strategy of "NO tears infront of men" became so normalized and encouraged as a sign of strength etc. I appreciate that you immediately thought of that little girl.

G'day boys, love this number, but it hits just a smidge close to home... growing up, that was my ol' lady, "what'll the neighbours say/think", my answer was and still is, "f@#k the neighbours, they don't payin my friggin rent"... We were supposed to have Ms Lambert as the headliner at one of our big country music festivals back in March 2020, before the world went to sh1t, and the whole thing was postponed for 2 & a half years... fingers crossed the show goes ahead this year in September...we won't have Miranda, but we are getting Brad Paisley and Kane Brown, so it'll still be off chops ay... :))

@@BourbonCountryReacts that would've been a sight to behold...🤣 we had a neighbour who did weird shit like that too, he was a Vietnam vet and when the moon was right he'd do go on a bit of a ran-tan...one time he was out with a push mower, mowing the bush (heavy scrub) next to his place, in budgies and combat boots with ABC Classical radio blaring,,, he hated classical music but it pissed off one particular bridge troll in the street, so that one was worth it...it was an fun street to live on for the most part, until the day they came with the canvas dinner jacket to take the forward scout away... he was good value most of the time, but when he was on a ran-tan, mate you hunkered down and just let him wear himself out... he's gone to a better place now... he retired to Queensland... 😉

I think the key thing here is, you got out. And that takes strength. It's easy for people outside the cycle to waggle their fingers and say "just leave." While it is that simple, it's simultaneously NOT that simple for the victim. Abusers excel at control through a ton of levers (largely guilt and fear) that make it harder than people realize. I really love this song but I'm the opposite of you guys and I guess quite a few on here. I don't like the line about "my mother came from a softer generation..." She actually came from a tougher generation where you were encouraged to Yes, "save a little face", "line your lips and keep 'em closed"...that is definitely not being soft. While I agree you shouldn't have to hide your true feelings about serious issues, we now have the polar opposite issue IMO where we barf our feelings all over Facebook/Instagram or what have you with no filter whatsoever. It's just weird to me, I guess. But I'm also really private with my personal life so maybe it's just extra foreign to me. I roll my eyes at so much of what my FB/IG friends post about, LOL.

There is a line between being a Steel Magnolia, and being emotionally repressed/repressing others. Luckily this sort of "keep the facade in place" pushing is slowly fading as the "younger" (especially Southern) generation has raised and is raising their children. I say younger, but I'm talking about people in their 40-50's. I think this may be why the setting looks very much like 1960's, because this has become/is becoming an outdated thought process.
