Exciting video Andy and Karl! Picc to Vic (almost) was part of my commute for many a year. And yes, cycling was always quicker (ca 4 mins, downhill towards Vic). The best route only has 1 traffic light set. Tram street running always much slower. Who needs t'other Geoff?

Honestly, I never noticed the red line on the tram stop but defiantly a interesting tip and also a very interesting race. Great Video.

Another Interesting test might be the Metro Shuttle / Freebus (Number 2 Service currently) verse the Metrolink from Piccadilly to Victoria. I would suggest that from the main concorse level at Piccadilly it might be as quick just to head outside and get the freebus over to Victoria as that only an ten minute service between the stations. That only works one way (Piccadilly to Victoria) as the other way the freebus would take over 20 minutes.

City walking is underestimated! People tend to think that underground systems are wormholes taking you from A to B in no time at all and forget the times for waiting at platforms, changing trains and all the stops in between. And these were races from station to station! My rule of thumb is that on average in a big city, a pedestrian usually beats public transport in distances up to 2 km and a cyclist should come out ahead up to 5 kms.
@eldrago192 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of the trouble is that it's a tram system not a metro or light metro. It is painfully inadequate for the needs of that size of city.
@skyblazeeterno2 жыл бұрын
I suspect that most people do not bother simply because you need to know the area and roads well enough, often people are visiting places as tourists, may have luggage etc etc I certainly agree with you that at times its just easier to walk especially if its decent weather. IME the biggest "dead" time in using tubes is simply getting to the platform and getting out

@peeky445 жыл бұрын
I think it's mostly for the tram drivers - so if they're driving a single tram which turns around short of the end of the line (like the Victoria-Airport route) they can stop at the right end of the platform for departure.

I plan do something similar when the virus dies down. I live near the M train here in NYC and it’s the closest thing we have to a loop, the two end points, Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village & 71st/Continental in Forest Hills, are a little over 2 and half miles as the crow flies from each other. Could a person walk faster than ride around through Manhattan.

Edinburgh trams are just as bad, millions of public money wasted on a service that's slower cost more to use, has fewer stops and takes much more space on the roads.

The Metrolink terribly slow in the city centre. It should be underground. I fail to see how a tram is any better than a bus. The Metrolink is expensive, louder than a bus (those wheels!) and requires enormous infrastructure without any of the benefits of an underground system. It's a shame that Manchesters transport system is so inadequate when compared to Londons. Having lived in both cities, you can happily live without a car in London but it's very difficult in Manchester. Tubes in London seem to have much more of a sense of urgency, rushing to and from each station, only waiting on platforms for 10's of seconds. Even the doors open and close open with a rush on the tube! Metrolink on the other hand seems to trawl along at a snails pace with dismal frequency. Once you factor in waiting times, driving is almost always quicker than the Metrolink. Until that changes, I'm afraid that Manchester will always be a heavily car dependent city.

Google puts this at 1 mile even. And “normal” people walk at 20 minute mile pace. 🤔🤔🤔
