My initial thought... Holy cow! Jimbo is going DEEP into the science behind every aspect of this project. Thats what makes this channel so special. No hidden secrets, and you explain it perfectly for the average person to follow along. One question though... that intercooler is.... a little on the large side don't ya think? I bet you'll probably do a ton of testing to prove it isn't. If you wanted any OEM application air to air intercoolers, I might know a guy :). Great video!

@@TheOneAndOnlyRandy if you do good work, explain what you are doing, what you are looking for, and have a calm metered tone, tons will watch. As a few examples, I'm a system administrator, I work with computers, but if you look at my youtube subscriptions, I watch people who use heavy equipment to build ponds, clear forests, and just generally dig and haul dirt. I watch people who trim cow hooves. Others who build pole barn buildings. Also a guy who does hvac repairs on commercial buildings. Now none of these skills are ones I need, or have any real interest in, but they all have a similar sort of tone (meaning just talking to the audience, not crazy yelling with funny voices and over the top jokes) and they are all clearly experts at what they do. They take time out of what they are doing to explain what they are looking at and what it means to them. It is super interesting to watch people who know what they are doing, even if it is something you have no experience with it. So if you think you can do something similar with gold carts, then I say go for it. get a camera, maybe a tripod or 2, and just set the camera up to watch what you are doing. Go back in later and put in commentary for what you were doing, what you were seeing, and explain any decisions you made along the way at any forks where you had multiple options and chose one over the other. Good chance you will have a subscriber base in not much time as long as you are consistent with videos.

So with methanol, it's got a couple of things going for it; 1.) it's an alcohol so its a fuel. As for tuning, you need to take out fuel because you're adding fuel with the methanol. 2.) It lowers intake air temperature by evaporating which allows you to increase timing since it's combatting detonation/preignition with the lower temperatures. Additional timing allows for an increase in power. THe only issue with vaporization is that it take linear distance for the vaporization to occur which equals the cooling effect. A lot of methanol induction kits include a spacer plate with a nozzle to inject meth at the throttle plate. This in theory "works" but that's way too close to the combustion chamber for maximum cooling. You'd need a long intake tract to allow the atomized meth to vaporize into a gas to make it worth something. Plus you'd want it to be after an intercooler so you'd get the benefit of the intercooler and then the meth. I saw a youtube channel of a guy who has an RX8 (a long time ago) with no intercooler and I don't remember if hes running a radiator or not (it's been a while) it does run didn't blow up. I do hope you see this and I hope it helps...
@azxuts7832 жыл бұрын
What you need to bypass the supercharger is the diverter valve off your choice of any old VW/Audi 1.8t/2.7t engine, the rumor online is the so called "710N" unit is the best, can't vouch for that but they hold up fine to 26 psi on my car. You give it vacuum and it opens, you give it boost pressure and it pushes the diaphragm even harder closed, and best of all, if you remove the vacuum/boost reference, the internal spring will allow the valve to open around 4 PSI as a sort of failsafe boost limiter. While you're at it you might as well also pull the intercooler off the same donor car as they are relatively small and easy to remove.

In a twist of Irony, I have seen cars overheat merely because the hood was removed and return to normal operating temperatures once the hood was replaced. Most specifically a mid 90's Honda Prelude we built in our younger days. The original engineers thought of a lot more than you might think when they designed the car, and they designed the cooling solution to work best with all of the original equipment in place, mainly the hood.
@robotcantina89572 жыл бұрын
True, but keep in mind this car is far from being original. Last summer in Michigan when we did a lot of development work, we ran with the hood off and it makes a big difference. Actually, for this car the best way to keep the engine cool is to remove the aluminum belly pan. I normally don't like taking that off because it keeps all the dirt and road grime from getting into the chain drive.

Air to water would actually have been trivial. Simple electric water pump. The air-to-air intercooler could package better. And then to exchange the heat to the atmosphere you just use the original radiator for the car.

An air to air intercooler works better than I thought they would when I first started playing with them. An air to water cooler enjoys longer use under heavy boost without heat soaking, but isn't all that much more effective than an air to air system for a lower power application.

I think the easiest solution would be an electric solenoid which would turn on when the throttle is closed and allow atmospheric air to get in to brake the vacuum. There could be a switch on the throttle body which will be triggered anytime the throttle is perfectly closed. A more advanced method would be a 2 wire idle valve solenoid driven by a variable frequency driver with position input from the throttle position sensor calculated with an arduino, that way it can control the vacuum electronically at any time, or even get the same microcontroller set up to bleed pressure when needed and control boost at your will at any rpm.

Make sure the intercooler you use has a weep hole if you're planning to do WMI before it since puddling will be unavoidable. By the way, WMI into a piping elbow will keep it from collecting as a wash on the walls of the pipe. Would make it easier to run between the SC and TB. Though, everything must be taken with a grain of salt given the low CFMs you have moving through those pipes. It might even be possible that a choke point at the WMI point would help as it would increase air speed. Everything will be a bit different to some degree because of the oddball application. I'm confident in your thorough testing though. Keep it up!

Dump the twin t-body's and use a vacuum operated by-pass valve. Or program one of the t-body's to perform this function. Look at pics of the roots blowers (M62/M90) from the GM 3800 engines. They have the by-pass valve built into them. You'd likely need a couple T fittings on either side of the blower with the t-body plumbed in to by-pass the blower under vacuum. Dig?

Just in case it’s useful, the Speeduino board you’re using can function as the Water/Meth controller, including doing open/closed loop PWM and ignition control b based on a few different variables. Did you know you can use defrosting windshield washer fluid? Has just about as much alcohol, and it's much cheaper. Motor trend, Engine Masters tested it on the dyno. Just a few hp less than boost juice.
@JaredConnell2 жыл бұрын
Does that have extra stuff though that might gunk things up?
@boosted00792 жыл бұрын
@@JaredConnell it's not quite a 50/50 mix. So long as you use just the windshield "de-icer" and not bug wash, it's generally just water and methanol. -30⁰ deicer has closer to 25-30% methanol to 75-80% water. But it can easily be tuned for. Or some guys even add methanol to windshield de-icer with bottles of "heat" that are sold as a water remover for fuel systems. It's nearly pure methanol. Windshield fluid is commonly used though.

Why not ditch the first throttle body and instead fit a blow off valve between the output of the super charger and the throttle body on the intake manifold. Then hook the blow off valve to manifold vacuum so it stays open when the throttle is shut but once you have enough throttle opening to hit atmosphere pressure in the intake manifold it shuts and gives you full boost.
@robertwood95722 жыл бұрын
Hey there! I’ve been following along with the series off an on for a bit, and I’ve finally got something to mention. If you’re running fuel injection, you really don’t need to use your TB in a “draw through” configuration. I’d understand if space was an issue but if you were to pressurize the front of the TB in a “blow through” setup you’d have vacuum under the TB at idle where you want it and the supercharger would never see a vacuum, and would render the whole bypass valve problem moot. Drawing oil through blower seals was a common problem a long time ago when running a turbocharger in a similar configuration (having the carburetor in front of the turbo) and the way around it for Buick at least was to use special carbon seals, or use aircraft stuff like a RayJay turbine that already had the seals from the factory. The benefit to running draw through was a sort of natural intercooler from the atomized fuel absorbing the heat from the compressed air before it made it to the engine. Those benefits really didn’t outweigh the negatives of sucking oil into the engine when coming off the throttle. If you’re set on using a roots style supercharger in a draw through, Nissans eaton supercharger (off of the xterras) has a vacuum operated bypass valve. Can probably snag it from a scrapyard for cheap. Also, I think there’s another size of AMR style supercharger you could use if you find the 300 to be too small (I think it’s the amr-500). It has the same mounting brackets so it ought to be a straightforward swap if it came to it. Cool project, btw.
