+prithvi singh H in a compound with a metal has an oxidation state of -1, otherwise it is +1 (unless it is as an element). This leave the oxidation state of C as a fraction - which feels weird.

Nascent oxygen or any other atom of a polyatomic molecule also has an oxidation state of 0, right?

Nascant O is zero, but atoms in polyatomics are probably not zero.
