In 1983, when I was six years old, my teenage sisters gave my twin brother and me Petra's More Power To Ya album. It was our introduction to Petra and Christian Rock Music, and we were hooked. It's a credit to my sisters for setting us on a path to be influenced by the music we listened to, and to this day in adulthood, I can honestly say the overwhelming majority of music I listen to is still Christian Contemporary. We were super fans and every birthday or Christmas one of the presents we got was Petra's new album (first in LPs, then cassettes, then CDs.) I definitely will say, Petra influenced me to accept Christ at eight years old and throughout my teen years as I grew in my faith and walk with Christ. I thought it was ironic y’all mentioned the guitar solo in “Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows,” because my favorite guitar solo Bob ever did was in the very next track “Run For The Prize.” This interview brings back so many great times in my youth singing along/praising God with Petra in my bedroom, and later my car. Thank you Bob Hartman, and members of Petra, for ministering to me, and thank you Lord for using Petra to do your work!

This is such a wonderful story! Thank you so much for sharing! That was so very cool for your older sisters to introduce you to Petra - and the "More Power To Ya" album, no less! I was twelve in 1983 and vividly recall picking up "Not of This World" that year. Yes, "Rose Colored..." is my favorite Bob solo of all-time, and it is a bit ironic that the song was not included on the 50th box set! LOL! But Bob curated the set and he had reasons for including the songs he did. "Rose..." still made the cut in this interview! 😉 I had MPTY on cassette back in the day, and I recall "Rose..." finishing out side one, prompting me to flip over the tape to side two. But I became too lazy to rewind the tape every time, so it was seldom that I heard the intro and the complete first verse to "Run For the Prize". No doubt, however, that "Run..." contained a brilliant solo - I can hear it in my head this very moment as I type! Thank you for watching and for commenting; my co-host and I are grateful! Wishing you The Lord's blessings! -Kent

Fantastic and fun filled interesting interview! A trip down memory lane. Petra was the first for me at 9 or ten years old. My personal favorite was Judas Kiss. Also loved the song It is Finished. I spent hundreds of hours listening to this band in the early 80’s. These guys opened up the doors for thousands of next generation Christian rock and metal bands. Swaggert and Gothard lost the battle. 😂

Judas Kiss was certainly a "Whoa!" moment from the backmasking to that instantly catchy guitar riff and solo. I remember the outro also being mesmerizing with that synthesized finish. It Is Finished also shined brightly on Beat the System. Bands such as Petra and Rez may not have been the first Christian rock/metal bands, but they certainly were pivotal in kicking down the barricades against modern expression under Christendom's umbrella. I don't see them falling below #4 or #5. Petra along with Daniel Band, Jerusalem, Rez and Stryper were my introduction to the wonderful world of Christian Oriented Rock, Hard Rock and Metal in 1985. They proved over and over that you can like Rock Music and love Jesus and have a great message. Sometimes when I would be doing other things there would be a Petra song going through my mind, either an old one or a newer one or several songs. Thanks for this interview guys. Enlightening and informative. Really liked the way you took it down the road year by year, album by album. It was a fun journey. Wow, still on the road. Good for them. I have quite a number of very definite (and pleasant) memories attached to Petra records starting with MPTA, which was the latest record out when I was introduced to them. I'm surely in the minority, but Jekyll and Hyde is my favorite Petra record. The production is stellar and some of those tracks just "next-level" stomp. Nicely down-tuned and no keyboards (yay!) Yes it lacks lead guitar breaks, and that's a crime really because Bob is a great lead player and should have continued to be highlighted, no matter what the current musical climate may have been back then. Also a loud shout-out to "On Fire" which genuinely surprised me when I listened in the store. I had sampled the previous couple of releases but they hadn't inspired me to drop the coin. But I bit on "On Fire" and brought it home, and was really impressed at how they had ramped up their power and energy on that one. That sense of trepidation and "safeness" on display previously was replaced by a much more confident record. Then Beyond Belief followed closely in it's footsteps and Petra was back on the menu for me. Bob is like your cool uncle who also happens to be a rock star 😆.

@@AREA312RockMetalVodcast The cool thing about the solo on RCSGW besides Bob's composition of the solo is the way JDB tracked it. The b-section of the gtr solo matches the way the ld vox was tracked in the 4 bars transitioning into the solo section with the counter-point & over-dubs. This was my fav. BH solo also but it also highlights what a really good producer Brown was. I'm aware he had some issues but he was a phenomenal producer.
