One of my first experiences with cold start was in the mid eighties. I was living in Dawson Creek B.C. and the morning was -30C. The vehicle was a 1978 Chev Silverado 5.7 l 4 barrel 650 cfm Carter carberator V8 engine using 5W-30 Mobil 1 engine oil with manual trans. The vehicle would not turn over at all so I got a ride to work. When talking to my mechanic he told me to push in the clutch. When I got back home I tried it, the engine turned over and fired. The gear oil is incredibly thick at this temp, and being new to this experience, I never even thought about the gear lube, and the fact I was turning over the engine and the transmission if I didn't push in the clutch.
