Pressure canning my deer meat is the best thing I have ever done! It makes it so tender, gives it great taste, and makes for an easy dinner.

I love wild game. On the island of Molokai, where I was raised, we hunted deer, wild hog, goat, turkeys etc. of course we fished too. You girls are doing a great thing by letting other women know other ways to feed their families. Thank you.

This is great. I am now following Stacey! We are homesteaders who raise some meat, but hunting is an important part of our way of life and eating. Great conversation!

I was just watching an Alaska channel and they had moose meatballs and moose, gravey, and biscuits. I tried to get into bow hunting years ago and I really liked it but had to quit bc it hurt my shoulder and later in life had frozen shoulders in both my shoulders. And that it is it was when I was shooting bow.

One of the advantages of the fishing pond and hunting woods on the homestead over normal animal husbandry is that if you need to leave for a week or two or if you are not feeling well they are basically self tending. I have often wondered if it is possible and legal to release guinea fowl on one's land and treat them as wild game that would also keep the ticks down.

Crockpot uses water. Can pour that same amount into pan after the meat comes out, boil all the good bits off and pour it into the crockpot. And then don't have to scrub the pan either. Sometimes I do this just to clean my baking pan. Let it cool a bit and freeze in icecube trays for a quick meat-base to throw in a recipe like bullion. But there are a couple tricks with that one. If pan is cold need to use boiling water (electric kettle 😄) And found the hard way the pan needs to be on a flat surface to keep it from warping.

The main source of our meat in our freezer is deer and hog that we hunt. Also different types of fish that we catch. Some bird ( dove ) but mostly deer and hog. I don’t buy a whole lot at the store as far as meat goes. We raise chickens for egg production and any roosters that get hatched or bad layers move on to freezer camp or the canner society. Learning to track, hunt, and trap are great skills as well as proper processing of the meat once obtained.

Hunting, real hunting, is simply another method of food collection. It’s as natural as gardening or farming. When you talk about properly cooking and processing the meat you hit the key. The skills are critical, the time spent with friends and family is irreplaceable and seeing and feeling nature is something else. Fishing is the same. There are many methods to use to actually collect larger amounts.

My husband is a hunter and while I never grew up with that, I have come to love deer meat. We have wild hogs that show up on our 40 acres. We trapped some last year and kept two of the female piglets and grew them out and my husband butchered them in the Fall. We now have a freezer full of meat. Wild hogs are so destructive to the environment, they can tear up your yard or field over night.

Add bicarbonate of soda to the boiling water with your eggs in. Shells will come off easily when the eggs are ready.

In Washington State you have to draw a tag, pay for a license, and then drive to the hunt. How is it possible in Alabama.

Once you eat home grown or wild meats you develop a taste for it and when you get store bought meats they taste like cardboard.

One more reason to move out of CA, lol. The cost of license and tags coupled with possession limits prohibits hunting from being as valuable in providing meat for the most part.
