SA-250 Lincoln welder trouble shooting

I had a 250 had the Perkins 3 cylinder in it. As anyone that ever had one of those machines will tell you, there is a lot of vibration. Mine done something quite similar to what your experiencing, it was nothing more than a loose connection. It quit welding, I went behind it and started taking wires loose putting them back on. Tried it, it worked for a bit. I finally figured out which wire it was in particular, and took some pliers, crimped the connection so it didn't jiggle as much, fixed the problem. I wish I could tell you which wire it was but I can't. You have the face off, check every connection. Look for one that is loose. Good luck

Same problem video was very help full I'm going to check out the full bridge, and the shunt coils. I didn't know what the Br & BL wires were for. I do now. My machine also sat for a few years and exactly the same probs. Thanks Again!

Best way to test those bridge rectifiers in testing them as a diode, most meters do this. Anything between .300 and .700 should be good to go. Also with the rheostat test with leads disconnected and run an ohm test. You want to isolate whatever you’re testing. Hope this helps someone.

Hi! Great Vid! I have a Red-D-Arc Model RA-250-V1902 Type D300K 3+3. My problem is the brushes are sparking lots and its hard to strike an arc, once i get the rod to heat up the brushes stop sparking and it welds pretty nicely. would the brushes need to be changed? and im also getting power at the 120v plugs.

A word of advice, don't use emery cloth as it can transfer metal particles to the commutator as it usually is a aluminum oxide grit and can cause issues. Use standard sandpaper as the grit has no metal in it. Finish the commutator with a burnishing stick. Also to help seat brushes quicker, make strips of sandpaper and place under the carbon brush and drag out using some pressure on the brushes. This will get the brushes close the contour of the commutator.
