If the rotors armature is shorted will the commutator show a short on any area you touch on commutator or are some planes on commutator ok and some are bad? In other words if you move the wire clockwise directionally around the commutator will the lightbulb turn on and off, Turning on where there are shorts, Or do all areas on the commentator light up once there is a single short in armature? Sorry if this is a confusing question just trying to understand if the short spans across the entire amateur once you have a single short. Thanks

Yes usually if there is a short it will be on all com bars I have yet to see only one or random bars only short. But it is always best to run your test lead all the way around just in case. Hope that answers your question.

Hello, so when you test the exciter armature it includes the larger copper surface inside the stater. In other words, just testing the end of the armature should tell you the condition of the entire unit?? or is there a separate test for the larger copper surface that seats inside the Stator.

In your opinion, if you had to buy a gas welder, switch brand would you buy

It really just depends on what your doing with it and what your budget is. SA200 if you dont have much to spend but need a high duty cycle and that is pretty simple to work on (you will work on it) or maybe just something smaller like a ranger or trailblazer might suit you better if you're just doing jobs here and there on the farm. Many like the SA200s because they are good bang for your buck and like I said simple to work on, no computer boards and inverters to go bad. Only real downfall of the older 200s is no AC power. Hope this helps

Greetings ! I did enjoy the video on troubleshooting an armature. It lead me to ask: I have a Lincoln 300 amp SAE welder, all apart. I am having a six cylinder continental engine, which has little wear, rebuilt. Now that I have the armature out-I tested it with a 12 VDC battery and light. It behaves like there is a shorted shaft to the armature- all the commutator bars light up ! What are my options at this point ???

You get to the bottom of that? I have a wobble on a classic 3, bad bearing I replaced but am wondering if it's the way it's connected engine side.

Have you ever heard of a " growler " being used to check armatures ?

Yes I have, I’m sure you can use one but I just use the methods the motor shops around me use. They usually either use the light bulb method or a megger.

I hear so.e people saying g rolling the rack is no good, what your opinion on that?

I personally don’t see a problem with bumping the rack a little if you know what you’re doing and have already set your ocvs. It becomes an issue when someone has other problems and think adjusting the rack back and forth will fix it. Just don’t go over 1/8” or so in either direction
