Brazil, is approximately 20 years looking for a new aircraft rather than 10 years the majority of the media are touting. Strengthening the policy in this case was a strong competitor, and you guys (Swedes) knew very well put their pieces on the board and eventually took a checkmate in North American and French. My congratulation for ausadia and for giving an opportunity of hope and insentivo this super machine for our manufacturing as a whole in BRAZIL.

+Gareth Whittaker It is because president and Defense minister should sign the contract. But the FX program (the name we give to choose our new airplane) started with Fernando Henique Cardoso government (1994-2002) and was made new rules and requirements when Lula became president in 2003 (the FX-2 program). Lula and Worker's Party (wich is in power until today) had preference for Rafale (Gripen is going to substitute Dassault airplanes here) because of political interests between Lula and Sarkosy at that time. Ex-president Lula once came to public and the media and said that Brasil would sign the contract with France, wich cause a huge disappointment with military leaders that were producing report (and other bureaucracy things) for the normal process in FX-2 program. Even the Defense Minister, filiated to Worker's Party and indicated by Lula to the office take place against him. So Lula steped back and the military opinion took more space in this debate. The main reason we choose Gripen is because the Military report was incredible well wrote and gave many arguments in favor of SAAB. The main reason we choose Gripen is "technology transfer" clause to Brazil industries and joint venture between SAAB and Embraer proposed in the negotiations. France would not let Brazil had acess 100% of Rafale and gadgets used in warplane. Brazil will not have acess to the codes of bombs and weapons. The key for us is to have knowledge that could let us produce our own airplane in 20-30 years.
@rafaelrp079 жыл бұрын
+Gareth Whittaker No, US had the policy of almost 0% of joint venture and tech transfer. And they had one of the most expensive cost of a warplane that was already in its mid-life. Actually US was excluded from FX-2 earlier (I think 2 years before final decision) when the terms of tech acess by Brazil became mandatoy. Whe NSA scandal became known this decision had already been made. Only Russia made a negotiation capable to compete with SAAB some months before the dead end. But the costs were higher and PAK-FA project was kind of uncertain for us for how much of our budget will be needed to be put on it since a 5th gen fighter is a big deal and always surpass the initial costs.

Gripen is arguably the most underrated multi-role aircraft in the world. This is the aircraft industry's own little Kalashnikov. Cheap, fast, easy to use, and on top of this, it is one of the best looking airplanes so far. I rather take 2 JAS-jets then 1 Eurofighter. It's AMAZING to see a Saab Gripen w/ almost 20 yr old tech, and it still can handle almost anything the invaders from the East could throw at you! You truly are ahead of your time. I've really gotten to know much about Sweden's Gripen and Saab, I've really come to admire them. Saab ROCKS! I'm thrilled to see the Swedish military and your full suite of ordnance, aircraft and Navy joining NATO! You and the Finns are long over-due and most welcome. The combined synergy you will add to the EU's and NATO's defense from the top of Norway, down to Sicily will be formidable!! Välkommen! Välkommen! Skål! Cheers! Salute! I have to tell you the legend of Swedish submarines are World FAMOUS! You ran circles around the US Aircraft Carrier Group with all our air assets, surface ships and the US Navy fleet of subs had nil victories, and the Swedes had a shut-out! The US Military was scoreless. We cannot be more impressed with Sweden, which is why the US LEASED the Swedish subs AND their crews and hired them to teach the US how to prepare for finding and fighting the quietest subs of today and tomorrow. I heard your crews were treated like Rock Stars! You really put the DoD and the fleet brass back on their heels and back in their places! This is my favorite story of Swedish military might! Well done! Well done!

With the current generations of AD/A2 GBADS that can engage over hundreds of kilometers, I think Gripen - like any other fighter, including F-35 - needs a dedicated SEAD function in my opinion. So far, only the the Boeing EA-18G Growler has a truely dedicated system for that function, yet seems to lack the capability to truely supress systems like S-300 and S-400 from stand off ranges. This is al the more pressing, since an S-300/400 battery can fire missiles well outside their own territory when stationed near a border, disabling or at least disturbing a nation's capability to defend its own airspace. Something I would consider, when I wanted to sell Gripen NG's to Finland for example. I wonder if Saab is developing a (sub)system, that will enable Gripen NG to deal with potential threats like that. Maybe a combination of an RF emitter localisation & classification device, a digital and adaptive stand off jammer and an ARGM-variant of the Meteor missile and/or Storm Shadow/Scalp/Taurus might prove the way forward. I'm not sure wether that is feasible, but if wiring allows it, maybe a podded system might produce a EAS-39F Gripen that could function like a smaller version of a Growler? I would applaude such a development, which would make Gripen all the more versatile and thus attractive for nations with a tight defense budget.

No Abba music ? (The winner takes it all.. ?) Quote: Gripen is arguably the most underrated multi-role aircraft in the world. This is the aircraft industry's own little Kalashnikov. Cheap, fast, easy to use, and on top of this, it is one of the best looking airplanes so far. I rather take 2 JAS-jets then 1 Eurofighter. 1) define "cheap": I think you mean "cheaper" 2) Will it be able to carry the planned follow up for the B 61 nuclear bomb (I understand that the Gripen is marketed as a fighter, attack and recce plane, not really as a fighter-bomber ? (can carry two clusterbombs, but not sure these are still seen as politically correct in Belgium) 3) OK, "she's got the looks", but it is not a beauty contest, is it ? There's really too much money involved. As Belgium seems to be thinking about close cooperation with the Dutch AF, since the latter has chosen the JSF and since I suspect the USA to design the follow up of the B 61 in such a way it will only be "carry-able" by the JSF, my money is on the F 35. (The US was "not amused" when Belgium bought a european successor for the C 130, which was translated into nasty bitching whenever Belgium needs spareparts for their C 130 still in service. Wonder if "brave little Belgium" can say twice "no" to our friends from across the big pond) Well, I admit, the F 35 looks like an odd duck, or a Turkey: quite plump and with short wings. I'm also betting that the maintenance of the F 35 will be sold as being far less expensive as the reality will prove it to be. So, after some cheers about reducing costs because of better integration with the Dutch AF, after some slap on the back of the Americans because of our 'wise" "choice", I'm predicting lots of "unforeseen" extra maintenance costs.

cheap???? what is your idea of cheap?The JAS 39E will be able to engage stealth targets with a fused, multispectral sensor suite (see article below), according to program officials. It will be able to cruise at Mach 1.25 without using afterburner, and will enter service in 2018 with a full suite of weapons including the MBDA Meteor ramjet-powered air-to-air missile (which enters service next year on the JAS 39C/D). The Swedish air force's fixed-price contract for 60 complete aircraft, converted from JAS 39Cs but with new engine, avionics and primary structure, equates to a flyaway price of $43 million.

Stealth sabotages the entire aircraft. The F-35 has the same payload as the gripen, with less range and less top speed. At twice the size. Because it has internal bays that slows it down and prevents fuel tanks and additional weapons. On top of that it costs twice as much and takes so much effort in maintenance because of the stealth coatings. Gripen is most likely also as good or better when it comes to networking and sensor fusion. F-35 is expensive because of stealth, not because it is great.

I don't know if this plane can be as a fifth generation jet but indeed has very good electronic communicators infrastructure. My question for SAAB is is it really suitable price in money value and second i feel that Sukoi Russians helped to integrate eng. as long as i know Gripen got hard time with it for long .

Sorry Josef, but I´m feeling difficulties in understand what you says. You have Great "Birds" like SU-27/30/35, MIG-31/35... (My favorite Aircraft is a MIG-21 Fishbad!!! a fighter in which the pilot needed a lot of courage to enter in his cockpit...) But the Gripen NG is "Swing-Role", his can make missions where they would be some Fighters of differents Types, imagine a Doppler and Datalink of MIG-31, with a maneuverability Of a SU-27 or MIG-29, STOL capacities like a SU-33S and Power and "Supercruise" like a MIG-25 in a single plane??? You know the EUROFIGHTER, RAFALE, GRIPEN NG, etc... are "Swing-Role"... Is Better but, in my opinion ends the romanticism just be fighter pilot... I whem was young enter in FAB (Brasilian Air Force), my dream was a MIRAGE III, I was study so much the cockpit, systens, controls, etc... Of MIRAGE IIIE but, I´m musiciam today and after FAB, I studied Business at university. Today I´ll not try again, cause be a Fighter pilot is easy today, the machine, the systens make all, and you are only a "computer operator", had to be same pilot for enter in a Mirage 3...
