I had a 71' Fleetwood Brougham. These cars just floated down the freeways. It was always a pleasure taking long drives in the car since they were so roomy and comfortable. Even though they were so Big they were very easy to drive and park.

@@theq4602 no, its Rear wheel drive. At this time, only the Eldorado was front wheel drive. The regular Fleetwood was down sized and became front wheel in 86 or 87, but the Fleetwood Brougham was always rear wheel drive

This one brings back some memories. As a 17 year old, back in 1982, I purchased a '73 Fleetwood, in great shape, for only $1,300. It was a bargain, luxurious and a very reliable vehicle.

Love these boats. I recently got a 73 Fleetwood it's blue on blue ride so smooth and quiet. It was passed down to me from my great grandfather who took real good care of it. No rust, dents, or rips in the seat. I only bring it out on weekends to cruise a bit.

My parents bought a demo `73 Sedan de Ville in light green with dark green vinyl top. Had about 8,000 miles on it and they paid under $9,000 (car was 6 months old at the time). Had the most beautiful dark green brocade seats. That car was fantastic...so much better looking than the look-a-like ones they are making today with letter names (hate that!). Car had a 472 V8 which got 10 mpg around town. Bought it just before the oil embargo of '73. Had a huge 27 gallon tank that took about $10.00 to fill up at the time. Best road car our family ever owned. Wish I had it now!

I would disagree with 1973 being one of the best years ever, that was the year emissions regulations really took hold and power took a dump all across the board. On top of all the cost cutting which began at Cadillac in the late-sixties. Every new car on the road was choked for power compared to cars of even the year before, a slump that lasted until the 90's... This '73 is still a great car however, but a '72 would have been a little more desirable in most regards.

Love Big Cars and this Caddy brings back fond memories. The 472 cubic-inch GM V-8 was the mainstay from 1969 thru 1974. In 1975 the last year for the Fleetwood Brougham GM re-bored the 472 increasing the displacement to an impressive 500 cubic-inch. I owned a 4-door 1969 Fleetwood Brougham Caddy. The biggest Caddy ever made in shear size was in 1959. These Cadillac's floated down the highway like a dream. Great memories. The Battleship of all luxary automobiles

I used to have a couple of Cadillacs, a 1968, and a 1970. They were large and FAST with the Cadillac powerhouse of an engine. They only got about 8 mpg in the city, but gas was only about $1.29 per gallon when I sold them. This is a beautiful car and very nicely presented. Thanks for sharing.

I enjoy all your reviews, this one was enjoyable as I owned a very similar car in 1976. It was a triple white Fleetwood 60 Special Brougham. I was 22 years old and for $3500 this was quite a bargain. I used to run Goodyear American Eagle Radials with Mobil 1 in the crankcase and could eke out 15 mpg if I drove carefully. The fuel tank held 30 gallons so a fill-up was pricey. This car smooth as silk out on the highway. It had Twilight Sentinel which turned the lights on at dusk and back off again at sunrise. It also had automatic high beams which dimmed down when oncoming traffic was encountered. I bought the car from a broker who brought it up from Pompano Beach FL. It was rumored to have been previously owned the famous Chef Julia Child. I ended up selling it to the singer in a rock band for $3500, the only car I ever owned that I was able to match my purchase price. Thanks for doing this video!

One thing you have to say about the Fleetwood Brougham of that era - it was the smoothest, quietest US car on the road. I rode in a '72 back then, and there was just something special about the road isolation with just a bit more motion control than the Lincolns of the era. Lincolns rode "fluffier", but the Fleetwood was just plain special back in the day.

I had a 1973 Coupe dé Ville - triple white - from 1986 to 1994 and drove over 60K miles in it in Denmark. Even though I went over the border to Germany the first four years to fuel for 60% of the fuel price in Denmark back then (gasoline prices sky rocketed in Germany after the Wall came down), I would spend over $500 on gas every month. But I truly loved that car. It is a strong and reliable car. If you drive it limo like, the milage will always be better than a 351cui Cleveland in a Mustang or Gran Torino from Ford, which a number of my freinds drove back then. My plan is to get a 1973 Fleetwood 75 Limo to replace my 1975 Continental Mark IV, when I reach the age for taking the back seat rather than driving myself.

This vehicle has some issues......my 1974 Coupe Deville is ghost-quiet like all GM B-Bodies of that era. BTW....virtually no-one would ever blip the throttle of the Big-Block Caddy at idle....a car that was meant to get you from Point A to Point B in serenity.

CH67guy1 It doesn't need a tune up. The belt needs tightening. That was a common problem on ALL the cars before the single belt design took over. It was usually the fan belt that loosened on these cars.

cadrolls I can only agree with you in part. At 9:09 when the engine is gunned there is indeed an indication of a loose or glazed belt. Attention to the offending belt will cure this issue. But this has nothing at all to do with the engine generally running poorly throughout this video. At 5:00 you can clearly HEAR the engine not running smoothly. Tightening "the belt", as you call it, won't fix what I'm hearing. And that "single belt design" you refer to is called a serpentine belt. Thank goodness for serpentine belts and automatic belt tensioners! Not only did they cure squealing belt problems, but they also resulted in less frictional power loss at the engine from multiple traditional "V" belts. At 5:50 you can clearly SEE the engine not running smoothly. Look at that those spark plug wires on the passenger side jumping up an down above the valve cover. Again, a problem not remedied by tightening any belt. At 7:08 you can SEE the engine rolling back and forth on the engine mounts. Again, something not remedied by tightening a belt. At 7:55 you can clearly hear the engine has a miss in one or more cylinders. The principle of "flywheel effect", which increases with the number of cylinders of the engine, does tend to smooth out the idle of an engine that's not running at its best. A miss in 1 cylinder of a V-8 is nothing compared to a miss in 1 cylinder of a 4 cylinder engine. Again, as I said 4 months ago, this car needs a proper tune up to get the engine running smoothly and on all cylinders. Plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, points, condenser, and set the timing, among other things. Or perhaps under the distributor cap is electronic ignition which eliminates the points and condenser, but this does not negate the need for periodic replacement of the basic ignition parts I mentioned. Cylinder misfire, like we see here, is a common problem on cars that are not run on a regular basis, especially those that are not brought up to operating temperature and run out on the road for a period of time.

CH67guy1 I have owned cars from this era. Until they were warmed up, they almost always run a little rough. If this car's engine was allowed to warm up, it would have ran much smoother. It wasn't just Cadillac which did this. All cars with a carburetor did this back then. Most people warmed them up for 5 minutes before they drove them. On really cold mornings, even when new, these engines would spit and sputter and sometimes stall if they weren't warmed up first.

cadrolls I couldn't agree with you more about these old cars! Not like the fuel injection cars of today. I recall my aunt's 1972 and 1977 Cadillacs. To start, first press the gas pedal to the floor and release, which sets the choke. Then just turn the key to start the engine. Would run at high idle until you tapped the gas pedal and then it would run at a normal idle. When fuel injection came about, people had to get used to NOT pushing on the gas pedal before or during starting. It simply was not necessary to push the gas pedal for starting. Just turn the key and the car starts and the computer initially sets a high idle for maybe 10 or 15 seconds, then reduces RPM to a normal idle. And off you go! Little or no warm up required! Do any of us really miss carbs? My buddy was a carb rebuild guru. He rebuilt carbs on his bench for all the mechanics from miles around. How many times back in the 80s and 90s I would help a woman get her Oldsmobile or whatever car started. She sat there with a car that she could not get started. I'd open the hood, remove the air cleaner, and fiddle with the choke butterfly valve on the carb while she cranked the engine. It worked every time. And they were always so very appreciative. I miss the old cars for their beauty and style. But the new cars of today are infinitely more dependable and efficient.

Nice video. My dad had a '71 and '75 Sedan DeVille. Great cars! Just a note on your terminology: The door windows are frameless, not pillarless. Frames are what go around the door windows on some cars. Pillars are the beams connecting the roof to the car. A pillar at the windshield, B pillar midway between the front and rear and C pillar at the rear. Also, that brake indicator at the top rear of the inside roof was to let you know if the rear turn signal or the brake lights were working. You could see it in the rear view mirror. it was a very handy feature. The indicator on the front fenders served the same purpose for the front turn signals and headlights. Also, that cruise control switch is an after market one for some reason. Cruise was standard on the Fleetwood and had a separate panel on the dashboard that turned it on or off and then a button integrated into the turn signal to engage it. The little thing on the passenger side floor that you called a storage compartment is a removable trash receptacle.

Ive owned three 73s. One was the 4dr Fleetwood and the other two were the sedan deville 4drs, basically the same other than the Fleetwood had the center post between the doors and foot rest in the rear, they all had the 472 V8. That 472 and 500 V8 was better than any of the rolls Royce engines ever made and was a better engine than the car actually needed, and shortly afterwards GM bought RR. Other Cadillacs I have owned are a 75 Cadillac 4dr deville that is actually bigger than the 73 in the video and had the 500 V8. A 69 Eldorado with the 500 V8 and two 1978 devilles with the 425 and one 1979 deville with the 425 and now I have the 89 Cadillac brougham 4dr with the 307. I drove these cars back when americans bought those little cars starting in the early 80s after the gas shortage because people let them go cheap and whats funny about it is that I spent less money than these other people with all those car payments and their compact American 4 cylinder engines screwing up all the time. A person that lived as an adult in the 80s decade in a larger area would know what I'm mentioning here. Out of all of them I liked the 75 deville the best

Great video! Its interesting to see how this compares to the 1991 Brougham you did recently. This one looks bigger and bulkier, and unsurprisingly the gas mileage on this makes the gas mileage on the '91 look like that of a Honda CRX! Great in depth and informative video. I love the 1971 to 1976 GM C Bodies. I will have to say in my opinion that the best looking GM C body is the 1976 Buick Electra 4-door hardtop cars. The Buick 455 cubic inch V8 in 1976 actually had more horsepower than the same year Cadillac 500 cubic inch V8. Not only that but the Buick is a 4-door hardtop (no post) and is actually 2.5 inches LONGER than the Cadillacs. The 1975 Buick Electra was the longest (.1 inch longer than the 1976) 4 door hardtop car that General Motors ever produced. Talk about road presence!!!

Your use of the term "aluminum" is inaccurate. These cars were made with extensive use of stainless steel trim. I know this because we owned this exact model from new! Use of aluminum garnishing/trim pieces could be found on foreign or import cars of the era, not domestic models.

Mom had one just like this except it was in black. She was a private nurse for a rich elderly couple in Bel Air, CA. She was in the old man's will that she continue to take care of his wife after he passed away. He gave her their black 1973 Fleetwood with 15K original miles in 1978. They already owned a 1977 Sedan De Ville in metallic blue. They had already given her a brand-new Pontiac Grand Prix for her birthday in 1976. Until I bought my own car in July 1976, I got to drive the Fleetwood. Great CAR!

FYI-the lights located at the rear of the headliner were powered through fiber optic cable from the tail/brake lights. So if a light was out, you could see as much on the indicator lights.

the foot rest for the back seat, one of the things that came standard on this Fleetwood Brougham. They were set up so they could be used with a Driver while you sat in the back seat.

That Net horsepower included all accessories attached and the transmission. I believe that turbo 400 used about 40 horse by itself.

Thanks for the Vid! Beautiful Example of what a car should be even today. a true Classic. Low HP yes but they counted more on Torque than HP back then to move a Car like this you needed it. Great Car!!

Absolutely awesome car!!! More like the Cadillac Fleetwood Tank if you ask me. Lol. This has to be the most massive car I've ever seen and I thought the 90's D body Fleetwoods were huge!! It's pretty nicely equipped for a '73 too.

nowitsabadtime No, except for the front end and taillights, it had the same body as the 1971 & 1972's. Prior to 1980, Caddy always changed their cars every 2 or 3 years, with a yearly update as to front end or taillights or both. The only year Caddy only made 1 year only design, that I can think of off the top of my head, was 1958.

EbonyBunny1 What I'm saying was the front end was unique for the year (I didn't say anything about the body) ;) '69 and '70 look very similar, as do '71-'72. '75-'76 also look very similar. I guess it could be said '74 was a unique year also.

nowitsabadtime Oh. The way you said "Gorgeous one year only design" I thought you meant the body. Pre 1980 that's what Caddy did, make a body for 2 or 3 years, but every year change the front end or taillights or both. The 1971 & 1972 have different front ends also. The 1969 & 70 had different front ends and different taillights, as well as the 1970's having more wood tone on the dash. The 1975 & 1976 had a similar front end to the 1974, but in 1975 GM changed the head lights from round to rectangular for all C body cars (Cadillac Calais, Cadillac DeVille, Buick Electra, Olds 98) & the D body (Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham), but even the 1975 & 76 had different front end. I do not know why they would go through the expense of always changing front ends & taillights, it would seem it was very expensive to do that.

EbonyBunny1 They changed them every year to 'encourage' people to buy a new one and keep up with the joneses. With all the competition, car companies can't afford to do that as much today.

This Fleetwood has an aftermarket Cruise Control unit. The Factory unit utilizes the set switch next to the climate control settings and the set button in the turn signal stalk. The headlights in the Fleetwood are automatic dusk sensing as well as the optional automatic dimming feature. The Lamp monitor in the rear window tells you when ever a rear brake lamp, running light or turn signal is operated
