At the end of the day, I went with a new 305 for several reasons, money, time and simplicity. For one, it's the motor the car came with so it stays "true to it's own", With all of the other upgrades I've done to it, it's going to be an incredibly fun cruiser. With some of the more involved builds I have, it's refreshing to do something a little simpler and not have to worry about falling down the rabbit hole with subsequent upgrading to support a more powerful setup. Thanks for watching!

@@saabkyle04 My brother has a 305 tpi in a 88 Camaro. Dad used to have a 305 Caprice wagon 1986ish, I think it had the electronic carb..... or possibly tbi... can't remember. My other brother had a 68 Impala with a basic Edelbrock performer intake and 600 cfm Edelbrock carb + stock th400. This is a family of "must be 350+" and big blocks........... and we all came to love the 305 for decent power, performance, great reliability, and *great* MPG. I've even been considering a boosted 305 TPI for a truck. There's pros and cons to everything, right? I think the biggest offender that made your Monte not that great from the factory is that oem electronic carb. I'm a little familiar with your car. My 1st car was a 78 Cutlass Supreme with the caca 260 cu' in' v8. When I was in jr high I'd spend all my time researching and dreaming about possible swaps. I looked at the 80s Hurst/Olds and Monte Carlo SS, not impressed. I dreamed about a Northstar and Grand National engine, but at the time they were hard to find and too expensive for me. Something alot more realistic to my budget and actually finding one would have been a TPI swap and that's what I was planning. I swapped in a 200-4r when I was 16, best single mod ever. After blowing 2 or 3 260s I swapped in a 403. The 403 was a direct swap and I've been happy with it since 1996ish..... still in the car. I often thought about adapting a TPI onto that Olds block, but I hate to mess with a great running engine. I still think the TPI is viable in 2024.

This build is so perfect. It's like exactly what GM should've done, with just a little more fancy thrown in. I've NEVER understood carbureting the mcss, when turbo Buicks were sfi in the EXACT SAME CHASSIS. Plus, the monte has a gauge cluster that's lightyears ahead of the digital dash in my turbo T, as far as usefulness goes.

Great video! I always thought GM did a disservice to hot rodders by not putting the TPI and a 5 speed in the Monte Carlo SS. That would have been awesome! By the way, I used to have the same American Legends tee shirt. Keep up the great content!

Looks great. Have you gotten to the point of connecting the brake booster hose? I recently bought a 55 Bel Air, which came with a 305 TPI configured engine. I am changing the front brakes from drum to disc. Don’t know options for vacuum hose to the brake booster. Thinking about a “T” off the PCV hose. My 350 had a plug in the intake manifold for this purpose. Can’t see a similar plug in the TPI. Welcome your suggestions.

I literally wanted to keep it "true to it's own" so to speak. The SS was never offered with a 350 or a 383. Depending on how powerful of an engine you put in it, then down the rabbit hole you go. I'd be looking at transmission work, rear end work, bigger brakes, disc brake conversion, additional tuning (via custom chips, bigger injectors, etc. The list goes on and on. I really just wanted to keep it a "simple" build that made a fun and reliable cruiser that will have decent power and drive/handle fantastic.

I know all about TPI conversations. Did it to a '75 Nova SS over 30 years ago. I got a complete L98 system from a wrecked 87 IROC, with harness, ECM and MAF, as well as switched to a T5 transmission from the old 4 speed and did it alone without bringing in others it do the work that you can't. Unlike you, who claims to be on a budget, your throwing stupid money on a full chrome accessory kit and brackets. All I did was change for a March underdrive pully set. Only issues I had was braided steel hoses for the fuel supply and return and modification of the gas tank to except the injection pump and pickup as well as an aftermarket VSS sensor that runs off the speedo cable. My car has frame connectors, 4 wheel disc brakes (rears and front swaybar off a '81 Transam). It cost me a fraction of what you are wasting on your Monte conversation and is mostly stock GM parts and will out perform your car in every way.

My projects are no longer side hobbies. I'm actually starting a shop too. At this time, I am stepping away from keeping reviews a priority. The views and the efforts to produce them are a significant time drain that I can't afford to do at this time. Reviews normally take at least 3-4 days to produce. Please take a moment to watch my recent KZbin Live as I went through it all in great detail.
