@@Figleaf-Bicarbonate There are a few foundational Ayat and Hadeeth which, if applied consistently, allows one to both adhere to sound scholarly rulings and, in the absence of which, allows one to apply ones mind to the best of one's capacity. The first, of course would be, "The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1). As long as an individual's fitra (innate disposition towards goodness i.e. towards Allah and what pleases him) has not become clouded due to repeated purposeful wrongdoing, then it (the fitra) would be enough, as an initial point of reference, to guide one towards what is right and away from what is wrong. But let's presume the uncertainty remains then one should be cognizant of the following "Both legal and illegal things are evident but in between them there are doubtful (suspicious) things and most of the people have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from these suspicious things saves his religion and his honor. And whoever indulges in these suspicious things is like a shepherd who grazes (his animals) near the Hima (private pasture) of someone else and at any moment he is liable to get in it" (Sahih al-Bukhari 52). Therefore as long as the matter is not one of necessity and one remains uncertain then it is best to avoid. And in avoidance one is further rewarded for following the Sunnah. However, there will of course be times when necessary uncertainty is involved. I.e. the matter cannot be avoided and one is forced to make a decision or choose an action. The following may then be applied: "Whenever Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was given the choice of one of two matters, he would choose the easier of the two, as long as it was not sinful to do so..." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3560). The "easiest" in such instances however, should not simply be misconstrued as simply selecting haphazardly that which one presumes requires the least effort but instead be understood as that which, once again, aligns with one's fitra and provides the believer with the best peace of mind. And in the end if one follows these steps and yet still ends up making the "incorrect" decision then it is important to remember "When the judge passes a judgement in which he strived and was correct, then he receives two rewards. And when he judges and is mistaken, then he receives one reward." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1326). We are of course not perfect, nor is our knowledge, however this does not excuse us from applying out minds to the extent required by the gravity of a given situation. And finally, "And never say of anything, `I am going to do it tomorrow,´ Except [when adding], "If Allah wills." And remember your Lord when you forget [it] and say, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct." (Al-Kahf verse 23-24). Neither be hasty nor procrastinate in making decisions nor be be disappointed or, (we seek refuge in Allah from this) depressed, when we exert ourselves and things do not go our way. Islam provides logical, rational and satisfying processes and examples for all facets of life. It is up to us to take hold of this knowledge and use it to attain success

This is innovation, the prophet (peace be upon him) didn't have the manhaj of criticism that you're talking about. The Salaf never did as well, so you're not leading anyone in their path, you're leading them astray from them. This sort of criticism is exactly the type of thing that leads to Atheism to begin with, what do you think happens when you start being skepticial about every little thing without any evidence and just base your critiques off off your subjective opinions? You start doubting your own existence, you start doubting Allah exists or not, you start doubting the Quran. Doubting scholarship is the least of your worries with this type of zandaqah. There is certain parts of logic and rationalism within Islam that prevents that sort of thing. The way we know that we exist is through our Fitrah or in other words, our logical minds, the way we know we can trust it is due to its self-evidence that we take from rationalism. The manhaj your talking about completely contradicts that.

Dr. Yasir Qadhi's way of thinking is something that I have generally observed amongst muslim scholars who are educated and raised on a diet of Western Secular Liberalism. I have observed this not just in the West but also in my own country. They study the Islamic sciences through a Secular and Liberal lens. The Western mind believes that we should allow those who disagree to do as they see fit even if what they do is harmful to society.

@Renkai Holyphrase no he hasn’t. He believes in Yajuj and majuj but that Hadith which says they claw. That Hadith is questionable regarding its authenticity. And many classical scholars has rejected this Hadith and the idea that they are still alive today clawing away. If the hadith was clearly authentic, of course YQ would believe it. His claim that our scholars had no scientific and critical thinking is an utter allegation that kills his credibility with the KO in a second. The Imams of the four main madhab's were opposing to each other in lots of matters even if one was the student of the other. Imam Al-Shafii was the student of Imam Malik and the Sheikh of Imam Ahmed. This didn't prevent one another from giving raise to different madhab's.

It looks like Yasir Qadhi is almost worshipping his Yale degree and is afraid of doing Kufr to Yale-ism and is trying hard to prove to himself that Yale-ism is worth it. May Allah guide him back and add strength to our faith.

I think other religious educations have the same problems. For example katholic priests can only study their religion in katholic seminaries. If they would go to a protestant university, they would tell him, how bad and wrong catholics are. He maybe would loose his faith in catholicism. On the other hand, if protestants really want to know what catholics believe, they should learn from katholic scholars and not from protestant scholars. I think this is a reason, why there so many misunderstandings between the different religions. We don't know, what the other people really believe. We often only repeat half true meanings. So every one should learn about it's own religion from it's own experts and learn about other religions from the experts from the other religions.

Dear o dear, this "Dr." has absolutely no shame in belittling the traditional Islamic scholars while elevating his beloved western "scholars". After these evidences there is no doubt that he is a just a liar and hypocrite who constantly tries to cast doubt in the minds of Muslims as he has already done that in the past. If this dude was preaching these views in a country with Islamic government, he would have been publicly lashed for his heretical beliefs. Please remember that this guy has attained some king of ijazah to refute and lie against any scholar of Islam under the veil of "critical thinking" but anyone who tries to refute him is a Neo-Khariji and blah blah.

One thing I struggle to understand is why Yasir Qadhi was so affected after studying in Medina for 10 years. Could it be an inferiority complex that many of us south Asians have with the West? Muhammad Mustafa Al Azmi studied in the West and became a respected academic with refutations of Western polemics against traditional Islamic scholarship such as criticism of Hadith. I think Yasir Qadhi is a very 'good' student who listens to his teachers and it seems like this is why he seems like he was so influenced by his teachers both in Medina and Yale.
