Before I was born my mother was told she would never have another child, my father told me she had cried for weeks after that revelation. After the news had sunk in they decided to adopt a child, everything was drawn up and ready but during one of the mandatory physicals to adopt the doctor found my mom was by a miracle pregnant with me. When I first saw this film in theaters with my mom I never knew why she hugged me so hard in that scene but now I understand and it makes it hit all the harder.

Im very loyal to my grandfather, he used to make wooden toys for a living. I once recieved all the old toys he made before he retired. When I accidentally break one of the toys, he wouldn't mind to fix it. One day, I broke my wooden duck. My grandfather that time was weak and quiet, but I still asked him if he could fix the duck. "Of course my boy, anything for you." He said that as he smiled. The next day, I was very excited to get my duck back. I found my grandfather lying on his bed with my duck fixed and newly painted. It was in that moment, I realized, the smile he gave me last night was his last smile. I cried for 3 continuous weeks since the time he was known dead... my grandfather, he was already ready to perish. But he still fixed my broken toy one last time before he leaves.

I remember being 6 years old and watching this at school. I pretty much cried at every movie I saw back then, no exaggeration, so you can see how this turns out. I couldn't understand why the other kids were fine and just kept watching it. I kept thinking about the scene for the rest of the day and tbh didn't even pay attention to the rest of the movie. The tennis ball walking stick hitting head thing made me cry even more. I think I might have gone out the room, or at least did some coloring for the rest of the film. It still really hurts today and I haven't watched the full movie since.

My grandmother and my grandfather both look so much like Carl and Ellie, down to the hair and faces. I can't help but think of them both when the movie plays their scene together. My grandmother reminds me of Ellie, being full of life and happiness, and traveled a lot (she was an immigrant from England and moved to America). They went on a fishing trip once and I think somewhere in Europe after saving up enough money. Carl reminds me of my grandfather, not only because they look alike but because he was so happy to be with her all the time. They even had chairs that LOOKED like the ones in the movie. He would sit in a small square one while my grandmother would sit in a tall red one. What breaks my heart is that she passed away in 2012, a few years after Up was released. We miss her so much, and my grandfather hates living in a big house without anyone by his side except for our annual visits. He recently had to put down his dog Rusty, who had been living for longer than he had and had joint problems. Now he has another dog we gave him when we moved out, and I'm not sure if she'll live another two or so years. My grandfather is grateful to have all these wonderful things in his life, just like how Carl does.

I've been in this depressive state for the past two years and I can't make myself feel anything. My grandfather died of old age this year and my aunt that took care of us for as long as I could remember passed away from lung cancer today. I resent myself because I want to cry so bad but I can't seem to care a whole lot. I don't know how to put it, of course, I care a lot but something seems out of place. I searched for this piece specifically and I bawled my eyes out listening to this. It cleared the fog in my head and made me remember the times I had with her. Music is a powerful thing, it's the wind that guides our sail when the waves are rough.
