The crazy part about this story is that the war started in Prague over Protestant freedom vs Catholic rule, and by the time the war came back to Prague at the end it had been so long they were Catholic and on the other side of the conflict. 30 years war is literal in more than just numbers.

For a bit of context (as a Czech or a Bohemian), when Joakim sang about "Karlův Most" it is the Czech version of "Charles' Bridge" which was, at the time, the only way to cross the river Vltava into Prague. FUN FACT: The Charles' Bridge is the second oldest bridges in the Czech Republic. It's foundations can be traced back to the 12th century, but it became known as "The Charles' Bridge" in 1402 when it's reconstruction was finished. Also it is said that in order to strenghten the bridge the builders added raw eggs in a mortar.

I believe the egg part. Scrambled eggs are nigh impossible to clean out of a bowl. Damn things have the bonded strength of Hercules.

Whats interesting about the engagement itself is that the defenders of Prague werent proffesional soldiers nor millitia, they had no canons, training or weapons for everyone, yet they manned the barricades with whatever they had and defeated wave after wave of soldiers from one of the most proffesional armies in the world at that time all of that happened because the retreating Swedish army didnt want to go home empty handed, the commander even recieved a word about the truce and peacetalks, but decided to ignore them for what he thought was an easy prey ready for plundering. The Swedes took the smaller part of the city on one side of the river after an extensive barrage that pierced the walls, but the bridges couldnt be shelled so heavily, so it came down to a meat grinder in which the morale of the city dwellers fearing of their lives and families prevailed over those of the soldiers of which some already seen decades of war in a distant land, tired and already on their way home, they left the city with what they could plunder and headed back to Sweden

Interesting thing from behing the scenes of this song (& the 2 different versions english & swedish), is that Joakim is 50% swede 50% czech. His mother was originally from Prague, before moving to Sweden with Joakim's swedish dad. They, as a family, went to Prague and that bridge (Karluv Most / Charles bridge) in the song all the time when he was a child. His mother was the first one to tell Joakim about that battle when he was little. This english version leans more to what the czech did defending and the swedish one is more about what the swedes did attacking.

Dave you are totally correct. Sabaton is the best way to learn history. It's a great way for children to learn it. My wife and I saw Sabaton in Phoenix last month, what a great live band.

Great reaction, as always. Always appreciate Sabaton’s tendency to just not waste a single second when it comes to getting right into the song. Those drums right at the beginning just pull you in instantly!

Hi Dave, I love your reactions from Sabaton, you always get to the point so very well, and it's so interesting to listen to your thoughts every time. 👍 There is one BIG "problem" for me with Sabaton: since the first time I heard them, I've really been "addicted" to them! Every song evokes different feelings, it's so incredible. Also, Sabaton has made me become much more involved with history.

You need to check out the entire Carolus Rex album in Swedish. Most songs on the album have entirely different lyrics and translations when you use closed captioning or watch Piscators lyric videos. The english version of the songs usually tell from Europes point of view. The Swedish versions usually tell the story from Swedens point of view. Also, it helps to watch and listen to the songs in the album order as they tell most of the story of the 30 years (80 years) war. You have to remember, Sweden at the time had a very low population compared to other nations at the time. Sweden managed to hold their own against nations like Russia and the Spanish Empire. The Swedes managed to change the war warfare was fought. Most armies at the time fought in a line. They would march into firing range, both sides would take turns firing into one another for a shot or two then charge with pikes, sabres and bayonets. This was usually done at roughly 100 meters (300 feet or a football field.) The Swedes would march to 50 meters (150 feet) through the enemies first shot at their own line. Then the Caroleans shock attack operated as follows. The two rear ranks of musketeers were ordered to shoot when "you could not miss," a range of roughly 50 meters (150 feet) and then to draw their swords before the battalion resumed their attack. The two foremost ranks then discharged at a range of roughly 20 meters (60 feet) before drawing their swords, and the charge began. At this range, the powerful muskets usually felled many enemy troops and was demoralising to them. Directly after the volley, the Swedes charged the enemy ranks with pikes, bayonets and sabres. Note that the pikes were used as an offensive weapon: in close combat, they had the advantage over their foes weapons thanks to their range. After the bayonet was introduced in the Carolean army (1700-1706), the final volley was delayed until the soldiers were inside bayonet range. Meaning they would shoot right the enmies first row of troops before stabbing the second row of troops

Love your reaction as always! If I am correct you have now only two songs left to complete the album. Long live the King and Ruina Imperii, both excellent songs. I suggest you do Ruina Imperii last, cause that's the end of the empire.

Sweden got away with the silverbible, evangelic text translated into gothic in the 6th century. (just after the fall of Rome) Translating the bible was/(is?) a big wedge between catholicism and protestantism.
