I love this song, many speak about Sabaton glorifying war and try to show war as something cool and epic, but it’s totally the opposite and not just in this song, most of their songs sing about how horrible war is and all the horrible things that happens, but not to the level that this song does, truly a masterpiece
@EskChan1929 күн бұрын
Yeah. Sabaton often celebrates heroes, from any side of the conflict, or just human and heroic deeds, but sometimes they also make warning songs that warn people of the bad parts of history. Sabaton celebrates humans and heroes, but never war.

This was one of the songs that I just had on repeat for weeks. This song resonated with me so much, it's message is so damn valuable. Having been in combat for the first 20 years of my life, the idea of a lifetime of war makes too much sense. The music theory side is too great too, I like how, as you said, it is slower, simpler, with less arpeggios and progressions, but I also would describe it as carried. As a soldier, the sign carries forward constantly. The song didn't end, the ending wasn't some big final beat, it was just fade to black, for all we know, the song of endless war has not ended.

I knew when that chorus hit, you were gonna lose your MIND. And I was not disappointed. I think you reacted to the Swedish version of this song, "En Livstid I Krig" when they did it live. So you have heard the Swedish version that comes from a more personal perspective of the common soldier while the English version has a more pulled back look at the overall effect of the war and the futility of it all. But both versions slap though the Swedish version is the fan favorite. Good job, Dave!

According to Wikipedia “The Thirty Years' War[l] was one of the longest and most destructive conflicts in European history, lasting from 1618 to 1648. Fought primarily in Central Europe, an estimated 4.5 to 8 million soldiers and civilians died as a result of battle, famine, and disease, while some areas of what is now modern Germany experienced population declines of over 50%.”

The 30 years war was also an escalation of the Dutch rebellion against Spanish rule, that had been going on for 50 years of bloody combat when both sides escalated by bringing in allies it became an all out war between protestant and catholic Europe that lasted a further 30 years. To the rest of Europe it's known as the 30 years war. To the Dutch and Spaniards it is known as the 80 years war. It was one of the bloodiest and deadliest wars in human history, with only the two world wars having a higher estimated casualty count. Percentage wise it is the deadliest war in human history

I don't think it will be possible to establish how many that died during that 30 years long war. Numbers vary enormously. How to count? Died on the Battlefield? Died in camp by sicknesses, wounds, famine etc? Count only soldiers? All the civilians living in those war-ridden countries killed by famine and diseases as well or by violence both on or outside battlefield in beleaguered towns or devastated countrysides? There are historians who talk about several millions and generations wiped out.

Might be a controversial take, but while I think Carolus Rex is their best album, it’s not one I’d recommend necessarily to everyone. Mostly because the Swedish versions are overall better, but UNDERSTANDING them might be an issue to most people who don’t speak or understand the language and can’t read the translation while listening. Of course, one can just listen, but then you’d miss the context, which would make the emotions hit that much harder.

A Lifetime of war or En Livstid I Krig in swedish. Has two different lyrics. The english version talks about soldiers and the 30 years war in a whole.
