The lyrical progression in this song is so clever. First he establishes that he is above all other men, then claims that he was crowned by God Himself, not the Church, then the prayer "Thy (God's) will be done" is corrupted into "MY will be done" as though Carolus were now putting himself on equal footing with God. that is BONKERS, brilliantly done as ever Sabaton.

He was a great soldier king, but otherwise? He wasn't diplomatically inclined. He ruined the economy in years of war, he destroyed Finland in the latter parts of the war. @@kekkoinen Not really, the peace deal that Russia wanted was to gain access to the baltic sea. Destroyed Finland? Kind of, i mean he got defeated at Poltava and then chilled down in bender and didn't care too much what happened up north when the russians were on a rampage. He's the second best swedish military king for sure and a military genius. And yea he wasn't a great diplomat. Charles XII had his faults, but he was a great king and general. I think many people don't understand him. They say that he was a bad politician. He wasn't a politician. He was a statesman. Namely, he didn't play the political game where you pretend to friends and lie and cheat your way to the top. He was willing to go the extra mile for the good of the country for the long term, not just the short term. Charles was unwilling to make a peace deal unless he received ALL of Sweden's land back. He knew his history how Sweden was almost crushed by coalitions in the past. Charles' goal was to crush his enemies so hard that they would never be a threat to Sweden again. By giving Peter what he wanted, Charles was dooming his country to another war in the future when Russia was stronger. Charles was an idealist. Denmark, Poland/Saxony, and Russia were all friendly to him when he became king, and he assumed that that meant that they acknowledged his sovereignty over the lands he ruled. He didn't understand that your average king/queen of the era was duplicitous, crafty, and willing to betray any ally if it meant a stronger position. Charles was unfortunate in the timing of the war. Charles wanted to knock out Saxony as soon as possible so that he could turn to Russia and do the same to them. Unfortunately, because of the War of Spanish Succession, he was restrained by the Allies because they needed all the German troops they could get, and they wouldn't get them if Charles threatened Germany. Because of this delay, Peter was given the precious time he needed to reform his armies. In hindsight, one mistake Charles did was to march to Moscow and not St. Petersburg. Charles' strategy was based on knockout punches. He dashed across to Denmark at the beginning of the war and was able to knock them out, and when he was able to enter Saxony, he did the same to them,. Charles didn't realize that Peter would do ANYTHING to protect his city of St. Petersburg, even to risk a battle. The very thing Charles wanted. If there was one thing that Charles was superb at, and something that I want to emulate, is his leadership skills. Even though he was an absolute king, he never elevated himself over his men. He lived roughly just like them, and he would never ask his men to do something he wouldn't do himself. And that earned respect and love from his men.

@@plasmakitten4261 Someone who learned WW@ more or less, the basics I mean, should know what defeated Germany. No, it was not winter, it was not USSR which fed the beast that attacked it when it grew strong enough. Simplest answer would be the united force of nations that were not friends, or in case with Britain and USSR--hated each other with fervor. I highly recommend to read about first year of German assault on USSR, preferably from someone who studied USSR, their history and military. Did you know 4 million soviet soldiers gave up in the first year of the war? Did you know that Germans captured so much ammo and resources that USSR would be fighting with shovels and sticks if someone did not send them first grade gun powder and metals? USSR was on the brink of extinction. A good proof of that was that Stalin? who counted his people just a bit better than filth, made an announcement to them calling them brothers and sisters. Did you know that USSR that made itself a purpose to eradicate religions freed a lot of priests when thew war started. They also brought back traditions of Tsar's army, ranks and a lot more. USSR was going to lose. If they made every man woman and boy attack Germans in that year, they would only delay the inevitable. I know, Russians like to think they defeated Germans. That is stupid. Stupid people ignited that war with Germans, and stupid people paid dear price for their stupidity. Winter did not defeat Germans and neither did USSR. It was like a rusty spear that hits the enemy, loses sharpness, but still has enough strength to finish him. The 3 nations defeated German army. And perhaps the one that lost the most men, deserved that the most. Then there is the story of how the world came to WW2 which is also amazingly interesting. But that is another story.

Love the story of Charles the Great. A shockingly good military commander for such a young boy. The ExtraCredits history series on him is great. I loved their description of when Sweden was attacked by Russia and Poland-Lithuania, when he said 'they intended to trap Charles between the anvil of Augustus' forces from the West and the hammer of the Russian forces from the East...and soon the iron was beating up both the hammer and the anvil'
