Actually, the 'legend' has it that it was believed that the King could only be killed by something that he wore. With this in mind, the Kings adjutants had all of the kings discarded clothing destroyed. What killed King Charles XII was not a belt buckle, but a lead filled brass button -- just like what the King himself wore on his uniform. Lore says that the king had in the days prior discarded one of his well worn out battle shirts, which was found later on to be missing one of its buttons.

The other day I read an article in "Illustrerad Historia", a History Magazine in Sweden, don't know if it exists in other counties as well. Apparently after years of testing and such they concluded it was a danish-norwegian bullet that killed him. I don't remember the exact details of the article. However I don't think that is the last word about this debate.

Aye, it has​ been a hotly debated topic for quite some years. I read the same article. I believe it has been considered the 'token history' perspective for at least a decade now, as I remember reading much the same in the old FAKTA Magazine (Swedish magazine in the late 80s and 90s).
