I think some nuance is in order. As a 15 year old, the church probably saw him as an easy mark (as everyone else did), so when he declared himself king by divine right instead of accepting his crown from the church, he dealt a massive blow to the church's power over governing the nation. Basically separating the state from the church in a time when the church had massive control. Badass :D

It was also a big protestant thing, further separating Sweden from the Catholic Church. Sweden was already considered a Protestant country, however, it's very clear that careless and the Carolinas actually believed the tenants of Calvinism (absolute universal predestination) which is why they acted as if they weren't afraid to die. While most Christians are not predestinationists, while in war, most Christians are 😂.

The Carolus Rex album is just a pure masterpiece about the height of the Swedish Empire. Definitely need to react to more from this album. They have English and Swedish versions and the Swedish versions have different lyrics from a more personal viewpoint of the Swedes. Definitely give The Caroleans Prayer, A Lifetime of War and The Lion from the North a try. Also, they did a cover of Twilight of the Thunder God which is awesome.

He literally showed up to his cronation with the crown already on his head proclaiming that the church had no say in the matter. In his mind he had been chosen by god himself to fight and expand for Sweden. He lead his fighters into war and fought his enemies himself in every battle. He was crowned at 15 years old and never saw any use in getting married. Apparently in his first battle once he heard the gunshots of the enemies approaching it is said that he calmy proclaimed "This shall henceforth become my music". To me he will always be a legend.

well, officially he was Karl XII (although he was not the 12th Charles of Sweden). Latin language is just amazing, f.e. in Hungary we had Mathias Rex (although quite a few years earlier and latin was still the language of law, science etc)

I agree with you that the concept of an absolut ruler who only anwsers to God is horrible and I am very greatfull that democracy is deeply ingraind in Sweden now. But, if there ever was a leader in Swedish histoiry that I would have followed to hell and beyond it would have been him.

Great reaction! Nothing but bangers on this entire album!🤘 And the history of the Swedish Empire. You have a point when you talked about having God to justify crimes against human rights. Religion and politics should be separated! In Sweden the church and the state went separate ways many years ago.

That figure on the horse looks a lot like Hannes the drummer. The actual Carolus wasn't that good looking by today's standards (probably by any time's standard's). The head is WAAY small in the main portrait of him -- unless it actually was softball-sized. That would explain some things, I guess.

The image isn't supposed to be of Karl XII, but of a karolin (Carolean) soldier. If I remember my history correct they first came to be as a part of the Swedish army under Karl XI, but it wasn't until under the leadership of Karl XII that they became one of the best armies in Europe. As for his head, yes, very small head 😝 As they said on some long forgotten TV show; Elongate the face to look Swedish. Our version of the stiff upper lip I think.
