+MrEgofreak Not really, only in 1600-1700 when they were one of the Great powers of Europe, and still most remembered people from that time are Finnish soldiers called Hakkapeliittas, so not really too many "war heroes" or anything from Sweden, most of the time they just surrendered and let the Finns suffers and fight their own wars, because the main sweden wasn't even attacked too many times, it was always Finland (Then part of Sweden) which had to suffer all the time.
@oobee123
@oobee123 9 жыл бұрын
+Ojanen There was no such thing as Finns or Finland as an independent nation. Finland simply was an eastern part of Sweden and it's people Swedish.
@1931Tre
@1931Tre 9 жыл бұрын
@1931Tre
@1931Tre 9 жыл бұрын

About Karl XII. Considering this young man, 18 years of age, had virtually ALL odds stacked against him on a political level - firstly the secret alliance between Denmark, Russia, Poland-Lithuania and Saxony to invade simultanously (which for the most part they did). In addition, Denmark controlled the entrance to the Baltic (thus tolls) and the British issued a blockade well into the Northern War. Sweden was broke. Completely and utterly broke. We managed to keep things going by HUGE, MASSIVE stipends (donations and loans) from France, whom in turn had strategical reasons for the Swedish Empire not to crumble and rock the delicate balance in the Baltic Sea. Despite who we was as a political leader, he was also an absolutely, unqestionably astounding campaign leader and inspirer of men. Like his father, he was a military man through and through. I read a biography on Karl XI (Karl XII's father) and it's very apparent how he was instilled the same soldiery, but also general military doctrine. Despite his youth pranks, at the age of 18 he had muster and had his REAL trial by fire against Russia at the Battle of Narva. Of course, like any decent leader, he was surrounded with the very best generals imaginable advising and helping him in both the tent and in battle. To sum up: He had the absolute loyalty of his men, and that's saying something considering the battles and general field conditions they all had to endure following the many years of campaigning in Ppoland. Take his Russian campaign. The cold and starvation, and still you don't see masses of desertion. At Poltava, the Russians were still afraid of meeting them in a head-on battle (that's smart, pragmatic battlefield tactics, so no judgement there) and resorted to scorched earth and building a massive fortress and series of redoubts. The desperate, starving, equipment-lacking carolean army - with Karl XII severly wounded, none the less - decided on a bold, but all things considered - well executed night operation. They succeeded in the first goal in taking the targeted redoubts. What happened later as the main carolean army moved into position - with a major portion of the swedish cavalry chasing off from the battlefield, and some of the more numerical strong foot regiments getting lost in the darkness and forests... For you swedish readers out there I can warlmy suggest a book: "Poltava" by Peter Englund. Absolute stellar book about the entire battle. www.adlibris.com/se/bok/poltava-9788202421472 Have a good day/night folk!

Poland-Lithuania wasn't in the alliance against him. Althought "our" king was a king of Saxony and a Russian puppet, the nobility said clearly that they don't want a war. Despite it the war took place in Poland.

Karl is often overlookt by other leader such as Napoleon, Fredrick and Hannibal and more( don't get me wrong they where among the best of the best) I think that many overlook that the cards were stacked against him and that he even came as close as he did to a favorably peace that alone makes him a legend in my book, yes he did fail in the end but few have ever managed to pull off such impressive military campaigns even in defeat while having the odds against them. For anybody that wants to read about Karl XII i recommend the book: "Carolus Rex -hans liv i sanning återberättat" by Ernst Brunner. warning it is a slow read. Ps i have read poltava by Peter Englund, it is good

Something my father told us about Karl XII has stuck with me for years. (I was fortunate to have a family deeply interested in history, especially military history.) Charles's "weakness" was not lack of courage, or brains, but one simple fact: His father did not live long enough to teach him how to win wars at the dinner table. The other heads of Europe were steeped in generations of diplomatic machinations.

As a Serb, I myself strongly respect Karl XII as one of the biggest and yet greatest leaders of all time. Let anybody say what they want, but the fact that he himself won against Russia, Denmark-Norway and Poland-Lithuania must tell something. Swedish is a germanic language, and sweden and germany have had extensive trading for thousand(s?) years. So the languages are strongly influenced by each other (Probably more german influensing swedish than reversed, considering The Hansa and all that), and Visby on Gotland being an anarchocapitalistic trade town owned and ruled by german tradesmen (and fucked over the natives big time).

When Denmark attacked Gotland 1361 (landed about 30km from Visby, don't remember exactly), the Gotland people went to The Wall to join Visby to defend the town from inside the wall as agreed, to double the forces and maximizing win chance. The Visby Hansa didn't let them in, and from the behind the Danish forces soon came and massacred them, squeezed in between Danish forces and the wall. When the Gotland "forces" (more farmers with their rag-tag weaponry and leather as protection really vs. Denmarks military standardized weapons, professional soldiers, and metal armor). When the Gotland people where slaughtered, Visby opened the gates and surrendered.

I appreciate the Swedish version of the song. Certain changes are, IMHO, rather good, such as the "Sing Carolus's song", which reminds us of the great heroes of Antiquity and the various epic poems where their exploits are still sung, thus comparing Carolus to a legendary hero. The " All that is yours shall be mine" adds to the impression of Carolus's ruthlessness. My biggest criticism however, is the lack of the line "I was chosen by heaven" we got in the English version, where it created an impression of unquestionable, holy authority - a very fine illustration of the concept of absolute monarchy by divine right as it was in use back in Carolus's time. The omission of this line here, at least to me, merely makes the Swedish king a tyrant, a ruthless, powerful ruler, but not as "holy" as the English version made him appear. At least, that's my 2 cents. The song is still an epic masterpiece. :)

David Sundholm The exact circumstances of his death is unknown. There are theories about him getting assassinated by his own men. For example, they found a button from his coat (yes I'm dead-serious) which was just big enough to fit the hole in his head. If you know Swedish you can search for Herman's Historia: Karl XII. I've never seen so much discussion about who's best and who's not. It's really sickning sometimes, and annoying as well. I am a Dane, and I love Sweden, it has great history and glories battles fought. I just don't understand, why some has to criticise other countries. Every country has it's own story and respect. All countries should be respected - with honor. Peace out.

There's an error in the translation "Knä om knä" should be translated as "knee behind/by knee" instead of "on your knees". Contrary to the rest of Europe-which during the time would form up knee to knee-the Swedish cavalry would form up in slight wedge formations in two or three ranks, knee behind knee to successfully achieve the most clustered cavalry formation possible.

Being a Swede, I decided to make a refined version of the English lyrics based on the Swedish ones (Keep in mind this is my opinion and if you disagree you can make your own. Also, don't be too harsh about the grammar): Carolus Rex - Sabaton (Refined Lyrics) (Quiet) ~ I have decided/Vowed not to start an unjust war, but to never end an honest/legitimate/true war, except by defeating the enemy ~ ~ King Charles XII (12:th) of Sweden My time begins This era is at its end All of Stockholm sees my coronation Cannons fire salute No oath accepted nor any I shall give My crown comes not from the church But directly from god himself Proved my strength through battle Born to rule, to fight (fight wars) Side by side! My time is now/here Over the Northern Countries I shall rule with the heritage I was given Time upon/after time Sing Carolus song The art of war, I have mastered Let my name spread fear Time upon/after time Sing Carolus song Once/yet again Sing Carolus song Born to lead/rule To lead (with) my soldiers/men in battle No one has command over me I answer only to the lord/God Hear/Follow my order/word Do not question me Know that it is my will and it shall be done Side by side towards battle With the Caroleans I go to war Side by side Over the Northern Countries I shall rule with the heritage I was given Time upon/after time Sing Carolus song The art of war, I have mastered Let my name spread fear Time upon/after time Sing Carolus song Once/yet again Sing Carolus song [Muffled in the background]: Forward Caroleans! The enemy is here. We shall defeat them. Throw them in through the gates of Hell! All I can see, I want more Who could stop me? All of Europe shall bow before my army All that is yours, shall be mine When I defeat/kill you My will, shall be done Proved my strength through battle Born to rule, to fight (fight wars) Side by side! My will shall be done! Over the Northern Countries I shall rule with the heritage I was given Time upon/after time Sing Carolus song Once/yet again- The art of war, I have mastered Let my name spread fear Time upon/after time Sing Carolus song Once/yet again Sing Carolus song

Many great meetings between historical leaders. Hannibal and Scipio, Wellington and Nelson, and even here Charles XII and the Duke of Marlborough. He was keen to keep the Swedish King's (described by the Duke's ancestor and biographer, Winston Churchill) "athletic and disciplined army" out of the war of Spanish Succession. He succeeded in doing so.

He slaughtered an entire squad of Stormtroopers in the video game "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed" just because they were about to kill the son of a jedi. He didn't give them any indication that he wished to spare the boy. There's a reason why he was pitted against Hitler in an epic rap battle: both men are the epitome of evil. A better example would be Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect games.

@itatane
@itatane 2 жыл бұрын
Not so much fucked up in the mind, more a product of what happened to him growing up. See, his father taught him everything about being king, EXCEPT FOR DIPLOMACY. I had a professor who said Carolus never learned that some problems are best solved with a dinner knife, not a bayonet. Essentially, he was only able to understand one way of doing things. One of the great "what if?" questions among alternate history theorists is, "What if Charles XI had lived long enough to teach his son diplomacy and advise him?" We look back with modern eyes, but he was a product of his era. (After all, Peter the Great had his own son whipped to death, the Spanish Hapsburgs were inbred and suffering from progressive genetic problems, and Louis XIV wanted nothing less than hegemony over western Europe.)
