It happens in live performances for various reasons. Nerves (especially in bands that haven't toured for decades), recreational substances (Look at Metallica, Lars made most of Metallicas early concerts at 150% speed cause of some Bolivian Marching Powder), no click track like they have in studio. Basically the Drummer dictates the tempo through the kick drum which in 4/4 should be on beats 2 and 4. So if he's drumming inconsistently its going to show as the rest of the band tries to adjust. Most of the time its normally just faster on stage when compared to an album not changing tempo mid song.
