Franz Stigler's commander had told them that if anyone ever shot at a man in a parachute, he would shoot them himself. Franz felt that shooting at a plane so badly damaged and couldn't fight back , was akin to that. What this video didn't show was that the band took the time to personally meet the Stigler family at that concert. Yarnhub does a great job with the animation. Night Witches is another with an animated Story video, one of my favorite Sabaton songs.

Another great moment is when Charlie invited Franz to a gathering of friends and family. And when Franz arrived at the party there was the rest of the crew of "Ye Old Pub" and a lot of other people, some younger and some older. Later during the party Franz told Charlie that he felt out of place, but then Charlie told him that all of these people here are the people he saved, their children and grandchildren. And that they are all here at this moment because of his brave actions.

Franz Stigler was trained by men who served as pilots in World War I. From them he not only learned how to fly, but also that the terms "decency, honor, respect" were not empty words for these men, but shaped their lives. When he was transferred to his first command, his commanding officer greeted him with the words: "If I ever see or hear you shooting at a man hanging from a parachute, I will come and kill him personally! You don't do this for the enemy, but for you and your soul. At some point this war will be over and you'll have to live with what you did or didn't do." For Franz Stigler, the badly damaged B-17 was a parachute for its crew. Therefore, he simply could not shoot them down. He's one of those pilots who deserves the title "Knight of the Skies" more than anything!

You should definitely look up photos of the B-17. You'd wonder how it kept flying. They don't call them flying fortresses for nothing- In an interview, when Franz was lining up the shot, he saw the tail gunner bleeding profusely and couldn't do it. Franz tried to get them to land in Germany and surrender, but Charlie refused. He then tried to get them to head towards neutral airspace, but Charlie refused again. So Franz escorted them to safety. He flew close enough to them so they wouldn't be hit by ground weapons. What a guy! After the war, he moved to Canada. When this story was made public in the 80s, Franz was called a traitor by his fellow Germans and a nazi by his fellow Canadians. Upon visiting a WWII party hosted by Charlie, he felt out of place. However Charlie told him "All of these people are here and alive because of you." Because Franz spared them, those men went on to have families and be happy.

My great grandfather's B-17 was shot down in the Netherlands in 1942. I regrettably never got to meet him. One of only 3 survivors, he was taken as a POW and heald throughout the war, we unfortunately lost a book written by a fellow POW written in Dutch about their time in the camps.

I'm a history nerd, veteran (retired) - now THAT is how you teach history, no? I love Sabaton (plus, great music!). May I suggest you try "Night Witches" (again, with Yarnhub the animated longer version) - it's about Russian **female** pilots in WWII?

The sad part of this is, that when the story became public, Franz Stigler received Letters from Germany calling him a traitor, and some of his Canadian Neighbours called him a Nazi...In another interview Franz told the story, when his former Sqadronleader spoke to the pilots and telling them, that he will execute the one himself, if he gets aware that someone was shooting at Parachutes. Maybe this was another reason why Franz was seeing the crippled B17 as a Parachute

If you check for videos of the story there is a 10 min documentary were other crew members of ye old pub also have a word. Also they show Franz Stigler pictures of children and grandchldren that are alive due to his descision. In that short ionterview Charlie said he shot down 3 planes that day and bombed a city and franz had shot down multiple planes as an flying ace anyways. They never talked about that in detail because both said it was their job. No grudges.

This war, might be the last war with honor. WWI was still the last war with honor, but it changed then too. WWII has a few left, usually older soldiers, In the current world, Idk. There are stories that are happenstance, not a Christmas truce. As hard as living on this planet is, I wish we could afford each other a chance to be whole. This story is that. Enemies can talk. Now, we have basically traversed the Rubicon. Point of no return.
