@alexmiller1175

The cross he deserved specifically refers to the requirement that a pilot had to shoot down 2 B-17's (the bomber of this event and shown in the video). Franz Stigler (the german pilot) had already shot one down earlier in the war, and here was this big slow defenseless target. This was ideal as the B-17's moniker of "Flying Fortress" wasn't just a joke from the designers. They were armed to the teeth, with up to 11 .50 and .30 caliber machine guns providing 360° protection for the aircraft, including above and below. Pair that up with an aircraft that could take the damage of several passes from enemy fighters, and you end up with something that's suicidal to take on alone. He showed great integrity, showing mercy when the once in a lifetime opportunity was dangled in front of him (being awarded the Iron Cross came with a few benefits, including a fast track for your career i.e. away from the frontlines in a war they were at this point losing more and more ground.)

@@alexmiller1175 Stigler had 27 ”points” up to this point. You got one point for downing a fighter and three for a bomber. To be considered for the Knight’s Cross you needed 30 points. Taking down that bomber would have earned him those last three points to be considered for the award.

The daughter at the end. She was the daughter of the german pilot. Her father (92 years old in 2008) was the one sparing the life of the bomber crew. The cross is referencing the Knight cross which was the medal the german pilot would get (he was one kill short of it). Also about the glass nose of the plane: it was because of the visibility for the gunners. You need to think about B-17 as about the flying fortresses. Love your reaction anyway. Just wanted to clear that out as you seemed confused a little bit about that.

he was technically 3 kills short of it, but taking down a B-17 was worth 3 aerial victories. Stigler was at 27 out of 30. From what i understand the glass nose was for the bombers, not necessarily the gunners. by bombers, i mean those who actually drop the bomb. I've heard they take control of the bomber from the pilots, maneuver it into position, drop the bombs, and then relinquish control back to the pilots.
@elssir1537

@@stevenzwiesler8085 About the bomber being worth as 3 and him needing those I know. I was referring to one kill in the context of the situation. About the glass nose, your input seems logical and I believe you are right. Might as well be both reasons. After all... the plane is not dropping bombs all the time so for the rest of it, it can benefit others as well. So thanks for the corrections. I didn't want to write an essay in the first place but now in retrospect, I can see my statement seems more like stating facts than discussing the topic so it could give a bad impression.

I’m just gonna copy a comment I made on another reaction to explain “the code of the air”-line a bit, bc I don’t have time to type it out in its entirety rn. Apparently in an interview Stigler said (something along the lines of, I’m paraphrasing here) that earlier in the war when he was serving in north Africa his CO told him “If I ever hear about you shooting at a parachute I will shoot you myself”, and after he saw the shape the bomber was in he said it was basically like shooting someone in a parachute. He ended up escorting them past the Atlantic Wall, which was defended by Germanys best spotters and gunners and was equipped with some of the best anti-aircraft guns in the world. In the European theatre, and especially the western front there was a sort of honor code among pilots, “the code of the air” as Sabaton say in the song, that you don’t shoot down someone who’s bailed out and is parachuting back down to earth. (There’s a similar thing in naval warfare that if you sink an enemy ship, when there’s no threats to your own ship, you pick up as many survivors as you can because the alternative is to leave them to drown.) WW2 pilots are sometimes referred to as “Knights of the Air” and they often held their honor rather highly, and shooting down someone who doesn’t even have a plane, was generally frowned upon and seen as a dishonorable act. It still happened on occasion. This didn’t translate well to the pacific theatre, since the Japanese considered it dishonorable to surrender, and to be captured alive was to surrender. It was a honestly rather tragic case of culture clash where the Japanese considered it a more honorable to not give the enemy the chance to surrender, and the Allies considered it deplorable that they shot at parachutes at any opportunity. That also lead to the only know instance of someone shooting down a plane with a pistol (no Sabaton song about that)

Theres another video that goes into even more detail regarding this story. "The cross he deserved" refers to a medal of honor. Not a gravestone. The German pilot was one kill away from being eligible for the Knights Cross. By not shooting down this American plane he threw away that chance. Apparently the German pilot realized something was amiss as he closed in on the bomber as it wasn't firing back at him. He got in closer and saw just how badly damaged the plane was and decided that there was no honor is killing a wounded enemy. Initially he tried to get the American bomber to land as being a prisoner of war is better than death. Especially since the Bomber would still need to pass over the Atlantic Sea Wall (I think that was the name)which was a coastal defense line of many anti air batteries. With the condition the plane was in, the Bomber had no chance making it out of German airspace alive. So as an act of mercy, the German pilot escorted them out past the coastal defense line because he knew the gunners on the ground wouldn't shoot at them and risk hitting one of their own. The German pilot risked his life initially by taking to the skies to kill the bomber. Normally the tail gunner would have been shooting at him. He risked his life the second time by actually escorting the ENEMY out of danger. If he had been spotted and reported, he would have court martialed and likely executed for treason. This story is beautiful to me because it shows that even in the heat of war, humanity still exists.

Not only did he escort a B17 out of the killzone, he also flew close enough to the plane, so that ground weapons couldn't shoot for fear of hitting him, too. What a guy!! I watched an interview and Franz had said that you only see planes to shoot down. You don't see them as people. However when he flew close enough to see the tail-gunner who was bleeding profusely, he couldn't shoot. He escorted them and once he was sure that they were safe, he turned to go back.

The German pilot Franz Stigler decision to not to fire on the damaged b-17 bomber and help his enemy was inspired by a speech his commander gave him, “If I hear of one of you shooting a man in a parachute, I'll shoot you myself.” According to Stigler the crew of the B-17 were helpless and shooting them down would be no different from shooting a man in a parachute.

Yeah, the cross the song refers to, as seen near the end of the video, was the "Knight's Cross", which he only needed 1 more aerial victory (he would have needed to shoot down that bomber) to receive it. I think you need like 20 aerial victories or enemies killed to receive it, and he was just one away, so he let go of "the cross he deserved". Loved your reaction tho, and keep up all the hard work👍

If you want deep, here you go. At an 8th airforce awards ceremony in the nineties, Sam Blackford's daughter spoke of Franz Stigler. ("Blackie" was the tailgunner.) She said that thanks to Franz escorting the Pub out to sea, some 125 people now live. Franz, took the podium and read their names. Thanks to Franz Stigler's mercy, he gained an extended family who loved him.

Correction: Ekkie was the tailgunner, not Blackie. Franz came up from behind, deciding to shoot only if the tailgunner shot first. When he saw the guns drooping, he looked closer and decided that this '17 was no more than a parachute, trying to save the lives inside.

The cross their talking about, is the germans highest military medal, the knight’s cross with oak leaf’s. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves (Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub) was instituted on 3 June 1940. Like the Knight's Cross to which it was added, the Oak Leaves clasp could be awarded for leadership, distinguished service or personal gallantry.

While the lady at the end of the video was the fighter pilot's daughter, I read an account where at least 3 of the B-17 crew were known to survive the war (there may have been more, but no one knew how to contact them at the time). At the time when the two pilots met, there were 25 children and grandchildren known to be alive because Franz Stigler did not pull the trigger.

There's no honor in shooting down a barely flying plane full of men freezing and too scared or injured to fight back. So Stigler orders them to land or else the German Anti-Air guns would blow them apart (first time he risked his life), when Charlie refused, Stigler escorts them past the AA guns knowing the soldiers on ground had to see him (second time he risked his life).

The reason B-17s had plexiglass noses was for multiple reasons. Remember in WW2, the US was trying to make as many war machines and weapons as possible to fight the Axis powers, and using the cheapest and simplest methods possible to manufacture them. Plexiglass was simple, fast and cheap to produce, as well as lightweight, allowing the bomber to carry more bombs.
@Bubbciss
@Bubbciss 3 жыл бұрын
Plexiglass was used for the exact reason you see here - in case it shattered. The nose was where the navigator (aft), and bombardier were located. The "cross" being referred to is the Knight Cross w/ Oak Leaves - one of the highest awards a German soldier could receive at the time. He "said goodbye" because he refused to shoot down the B-17, which would have been his 25th kill (25 kills are required for Luftwaffe pilots to receive this medal).

No, it is the otherway around! The old woman is the daughter to franz Stigler, the german fighter pilot and the boy, is her son and franz grandson and fan of sabaton. Franz, the German fighter pilot of the Messerschmitt Bf 109-G6 and which protected the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress by flying right behind or beside the Ye Olde Pub. He was doing so to protect her from incoming enemy flak cannon fire of the devastated 88 mm anti aircraft gun batteries. With out this merciful act, the bomber would have been shot down. fighter pilots lived under a code, originated from WW1, is not right to fire on someone who can’t return fire to protect themselves. Not all germans where bad or even Nazis, they fought for their homelands and home country.

Pilots were considered Knights of the Air and were chivalrous towards the enemy. They would never shoot a helpless enemy, ie a enemy pilot that has parachuted out of their damaged plane. Franz Stigler believed the B-17 to be a parachute for the entire crew. That is why he risked his life from being shot down from the crew of Ye Olde Pub, being shot down from his own anti-aircraft artillery, and risking court martial from his superiors should they have found out what he had done.

They have a plexiglas nose, so they could see where to drop the bombs, as the bombardier who dropped the bombs, sat in front of the pilots and behind bow gunners. And glass can shattered in many tiny pieces and would cause serious injuries to crew if the glass got hit. They also had a gunner or two, with mounted 50 or 30 cal browning machine guns in the front. The B17 had two machine turrets, one underneath, one above, two machine gunners at the sides and a tailgunner.

“Fly, Fighting fair.” It’s the code, of the air. This is said because the code of aviation was that if a plane: Bomber or attack ; is too damaged to keep fighting, then its unlawful to shoot it down. Considering planes during WWI and II were so fragile and easy to shoot down. The pilot risked his life for honor, as with his Officer, he says “Honor is everything. And by “Said Goodbye to the cross he deserved”, that pilot was one kill away from the Knights Cross that would make him an ace. He was going to shoot down that B-17, but he chose to spare it as it was too damaged to fight. So damaged that it was a miracle that it was still flying. But after an interview and reunion with the pilot of the B-17, he says he got something greater than the cross.
