I think Sabaton explained, that the tempo/sound of the guitar reminds of the sound of a train on the tracks. In my opinion that's pretty accurate. Emotional but important song. Thanks for your reaction! 🙌🏼

This is a song that I struggle with. For the longest time I never listened to this Sabaton song. My grandparents survived the Holocaust, my grandfather Auschwitz, my grandmother Bergen-Belsen. In total I have 70 relatives enter the camps. Only 9 survived. I know it was the Nazis, and they still affect my family today. My grandparents didn’t meet until after they emigrated to the US. Because of the malnutrition, torture, and experimentation that the Nazis did, they were told that they wouldn’t be able to have kids. So they took a fertility drug and had my Aunt and Mom. Mom died last year due to the various side effects of that drug. My sister, was nearly beaten to death in middle school by the granddaughters of a H*tler Youth guard at Bergen-Belsen, where my grandmother was. I first listened to this song in a reaction to another reactor (No hard feelings David!). I didn’t want to listen this song on it’s own. I still haven’t. Only listened to this song through reactions. That being David, first off, I thank you for breaking down the song, love hearing the the music theory and the explanation behind it. Second, thank you for acknowledging what the song is about. I was afraid that you weren’t going to for a moment there.

I usually listen to Sabaton 6+ hours every day and every time I listen to this song it hits me right in the feels, man. It is completely mad what mankind can do to one another.

Sabaton choosed to do this song acoustic live, it hits even harder. Acoustic, it turn into a haunting and very emotional song. The lyrics is so dark, it doesn't feels right to headbanging to this. I suggest you to listen to live from Krakow, it might have the best audio

For me, the slower tempo represents the sound of the wheels of the trains carrying people to the extermination camps. Very sad but powerful song. Thanks for the reaction!

14 years of school & 4 years of college and I never learned some of the important WWII dates. A few listens to Sabaton songs and they're locked in. Sabaton seems to be the better history teacher.

Rings on a tree is a better history teacher. Need a primer on schools watch "Don't stay in school by BoyInABand" 7 years ago. Relevant for 50 years. Still bloody relevant now. Would request it but Dave has said many times lyrics arent his thing

Very dark topic but the music, guitar solo that goes into the keyboard solo and such. If you listen to drums at ~1:54 in the music video, i totally missed those beats the first times i watched the video.

they tried to emulate the sound of a running train with the instruments

There is a reason for the slower pace, and I’m sure that if you know what the song is about, you will understand that a faster pace would not have been appropriate for the subject. As far as I’m concerned it is a great song, very atmospheric and it perfectly fits to the subject. Even the ‘long’ keyboard solo.

If you like their more high tempo songs and you haven't already done it I'd recommend their song "lion from the north" from the "carolus rex" album preferably with the intro part for best experience

The song was a Durge. And who ever heard of a "fast-paced" durge? Also, I believe they used an electric chello behind the g solo. Gives that haunting/whinning sound.

As a whole I really like the song, especially sped up to 1.75x speed (that's true for most songs for me though) as it had a good feel, good instrumentation (which if you listen carefully the guitar playing sounds like a train on train tracks) and good vocals and harmonies. Thinking about it now since you brought it up I can see how some might feel the keyboard solo went on for too long, but like you said at least they were changing it up and not just sticking with the same notes for the whole time. Overall a solid song with a somber message (which you're right when you say the Nazi's share the bulk of the blame for the Holocaust). Speaking of which this is one song they rarely play live and when they do it's a more stripped down acoustic version of it. In case someone's curious here you go: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHS7h5yMrNeYkMk

I know some other reactors have had luck requesting the label not block Sabaton songs. The band is actually REALLY supportive of reactions. Also, the picking got to you because it sounds like a train... A train that keeps going until the chorus when the song lyrically arrives at Auschwitz. I didn't catch it the first couple times I listened, but it still had the emotional effect even if I was unaware. This song is just moment after moment of impending dread, and it's that constant picking that's taking us there

Nice reaction Dave, thanks! It would be great to see your reaction and get to know your thoughts on their very fast pace song: "Stormtroopers" .

Not many reactors touch this song. Probably they're afraid of the subject of the song. There is a live recordning of this where they do it acoustic which actually gets pretty powerful. It's not one of their best songs but I like it very much. It just...the subject makes it hard to "like" it.

One can like a song for the music and artistry....the subject matter can be put aside for the sake of just enjoying the instrumentation and vocal performance. I agree, the subject matter is rough, so I chose not to even discuss it at all.

Interesting reaction. I got a kind of love-hate relation with that one. On one hand, this is a very important song, unfortunately still to this day. On the other hand, the chorus sounds kind of epic and glorifying to me, even if that not at all the intent of the band. In the studio version, I guess it's still ok, but I've seen the band perform the song live and the crowd singing alon the chorus with their beer in their hand is kind of weird to me. I guess it was weird to the band too, as they no longer play the song live. But I love the guitar solo and the verses.

They play it acoustic now, which gives the song a very different vibe. And people use the light of their cellphones or lighters to create atmosphere. Even if the audience sing along, it still feels different now,

Completely agree with you when it comes to the keyboard solo, it’s way too long, besides that, the song is great, even thou the subject is the worst possible!!

Sabaton said themself, this was no song to make uptempo, as its one of the heaviest subjects they wrote about.. it just wouldnt be right to them.. Yes the German people was not to blame, they could chose to denie follow orders, and die, or do as expected, well do you want to live or die..
