This is the fascinating story of France’s Albert Severin Roche who inspired our single, “The First Soldier”. Roche was named “The First Soldier of France” for his bravery while fighting for the French army in WWI. Despite his small stature and his peers’ skepticism, he proved that he was a hero.

======== The First Soldier LYRICS ==========
Before the war, he wanted more
And ran away from home
The War to End All Wars had called his name
Outcast, an unlikely soldier
Barely worth his uniform
Emerging as a devil dressed in blue
Being the lone survivor
At the trenches in Alsace
One man holds the line
From the south to the front to the battlefield
From a farm to a hero of France
Served his country courageous and fearless
As he halts the Kaiser’s advance
From the south to the front into no man’s land
From a farm to the end of the road
Son of France he is the first on the frontline
Coming home
Coming home, let his story be known
Glorious, victorious
Protector of the tomb
Memories of his deeds, the cross of war
He’s a decorated soldier, he’s the pride of the uniform
Echoes from the past his story told
Lined up for execution
Saved his captain’s life
One man holds the line

As a retired Marine, I choked on my breath, feeling he had been done so wrongly. Its a shame heros like him havent lived long enough to see that after so many decades,he is once again celebrated..in tale and song. I also love the fact that he was small, not necessarily very strong, but fightsy and spirited. Really fits the theme of France as the only Democratic Republic (in the original meaning of the term, notthe twisted communist version) of WW1

@@Cancoillotteman I can appreciate the struggle and tests of being small. I was 5'7" tall and 114 pounds when I joined the Marines and went to Parris Island during Vietnam. Seems I had to prove myself at every unit I was detatched to.But,after a couple years,my attitude and willingness to apply my ability to fight preceeded me and I found it a bit easier to fit in. Now,at 70 years old,Ive had 5 motorcycle club patches on my back, and found my way into the outlaw circle to attain the 1%er status. So yeah, small people struggle. But,with a bit of guts, and determination, and busting a few heads, the bumps in the road to personal progress smooth out a bit. But this soldier in the story...damn...thats a medal of honor man thru n thru in my opinion.

@@CoolManCoolMan123 Depending on the regiments specifications, body types can be more usefull than others. For instance, in the french army, they talk about "chats maigres" (skinny cats) which may not be the best soldier to wear ballistic plates, machinegun and heavy equipments, but are quick, mobile, can easely conceal, climb etc. And some of them are in the SF. In his book, an ex french SF from the commando marines, talks about how the US spec op were generally larger compared to its team. Big guys are great for carying tons of stuff and deliver more fire power, and you don't want to be fight them hand to hand, but skinny cat have more endurance, and can progress over larger piece of ground if needed, without being exhausted. Each (healthy) body type has its pro and cons, and if used proprely, can make a difference where it is needed !

I think it's become a sort of custom to begin including the band members in the animated history videos for Sabaton's songs. I spotted Joakim in the trench at 3:08, I'm pretty sure that it was supposed to be Pär cleaning his rifle at 3:29, Chris and Hannes are standing side by side at 10:47, and as the camera pans on, Tommy is revealed to be standing next to Hannes, roughly at the 10:50 mark.

Imagine if he had lived long enough to participate in the Greater War; there's a German officer sitting in his bunker, older but not yet withered, looking at an inteligence list of positions lost and men captured. He asks "how many crack companies have the French been keeping in reserve?" His inteligence department reports most if not all the credit goes to one man. The officer scoffs outwardly, though internally he is begining to have flashbacks, and desperately pours over the reports, hoping he's wrong. Then he sees a name, a very FAMILIAR name, and suddenly he's scrambling for the door, the nearest alcohol cabinet, or both, screaming "not zis glorious bastard again!"
