The irony of Albert Severin Roche dying by way of a car crashing in to him and the "Unkillable Soldier" Lieutenant-General Sir Adrian Paul Ghislain Carton de Wiart dying by falling down the stairs.

If I was a conspiracy theorist, I'd say the lizard illuminati took one look at that ultimate gigachad and decided that having him alive at the same time as Mad Jack Churchill and Alvin York would mean the Germans would be too scared to try for round two. Same story with T.E. Lawrence.

Bit of history for clarification. Fance DID have a spoon type grenade for WWI. It was the Grenade Percuntante Nr.1 (Pear Grenade No.1) which was used successfully but had a habit of prematurely detonating and had to land perfectly on its base once the spoon and pin were pulled. In the trenches of Alsace, Albert was the only man left alive after INTENSE German bombardment. He ran along the trench picking up the rifles of his dead comrades and firing them alternatively to make the enemy believe their barrage had been less effective than it had been. His letter basically says "In an hour, I shall be shot. But I assure you I am innocent."

There are a lot of parallels between Albert Roche and Audi Murphy. Both grew up on farms, both were rejected by their militaries, both were told they were too short and would never make good soldiers, both performed incredible deeds in war, both survived their wars, and both died in accidents in their mid-forties.

The good thing about Audie Murphy, which I don't believe is true of Albert Roche, is that he was able to have a son following the war. Audie Murphy's son was very thankful for the Sabaton version of his father's tale to hell and back.

small note to add regarding what the person in the chat said about Roche 'running on adreniline and anger at that point', the guy was literally on fumes, he had not slept, hadn't eaten, and was relying purely on instinct and the sheer willpower to not die, while it's true that in most cases a massive adreniline rush doesn't last long, depending on the circumstances, and the individual, you can actually prolong the effects for a long time if necessary, it's just not something that should ever be encouraged as it causes severe problems after things settle down.

The Mills-type grenade was developed during World War 1. There were French and German designs that were unique, but all worked more or less the same way...As to fuse length, those were "suggestions" than hard requirements.

It's a treat seeing your reactions to these. Sabaton are a band that I , as a swede, am immensely proud of. They do us all a great service by making sure that these stories and legends remain in living memory. While their collabs with Yarnhub are great, I can't wait to see you react to Sabaton's own music videos. The production quality on music videos like "Fields Of Verdun", "1916", "Livgardet", "Christmas Truce", "The Royal Guard", "Bismarck" and so many others are phenomenal. And the swedish version of "En Livstid I Krig", specifically the live video recorded in Gothenburg is amazing. The crowd makes the video. It's very touching. Just make sure you enable subtitles or have the lyric translation on hand.

As this is the start of WW1 the French had 3 systems, Cavalry, Infantry, and Artillery. Roche would be classified as a infantryman however due to his not completing the training, mainly cause the other soldiers kept trying to bully him into leaving, he was switched from a rear line in training unit to a front-line unit as a reinforcement. Under the infantry you can get sub positions such as Grenadier, Sniper, Machinegunner, Runner, and more. As far as the E.O.D. from the Hurt Locker, embellished is kinda explained because they have rough days at work. Most of the time the bombs you run into is a really crappy yield explosive you can get rid of it. However there are times where they get massive things like old artillery shells or a few times 12 to 16 inch battleship shells have been used. Not to mention E.O.D. are as targeted as Doc in the units. Keep in mind a competent gunner will saw a car in half without question after the first statement call as its no joke and a risk of life. So because its hard to show they tried to show him dealing with the experience manual. It goes small ordinance, multi ordinance, then heavy ordinance. He also covers why the equipment can be questionable, or capturing moments in question of how people in the Middle East have handled things. There are civilians that could give a rats ass less about you doing your job, your an inconvenience and anyone who dies is because of your meddling with the forces you picked a fight with. So if you follow the technical point they didn't really go outside the concept of what E.O.D. has delt with. They often are not equipped with anything more then a handgun and they cant work with locals watching in case they report to the enemy force as an informant. The enemy was dressed as civilians at all times making it hard to identify civilians, friendly natives, and enemy natives. These points were all covered in the movie's short time frame, which makes it hard, and yes handling the explosives was a mixed bag as some of the movie did good some did bad with it, such as the daisy chain of chord lifting the artillery shells and such. France came up as one of the most technology, stabilizing smokeless powder or early "Gun cotton" allowed them to make some of the most impressive fire-arm changes in the late 1800s. Specifically they upgraded there ammunition and the change from Black powder munition to Smokeless was so drastic that whole nations had to change weapon development overnight or start working at it as soon as they could. The first rifle the French Lebel fired this with a change in bullet style. The range of the bolt rifle was 300 meters before and could range higher but gained harder difficulty at range, however this innovation pushed the Lebel past 500 for flat shooting out of a specific twist barrel and made the rifle capable of nearly 4 times the firing compared to the fouling limit. On top of this they changed pistols and updated a grenade concept from the Franco Prussian war where France was throwing a specific grenade and it had a 50/50 detonation rate. Fuses are set by the company lead grenadier. Meaning grenades basically pass threw a armorer who can set the grenade up to a 10 second fuse as short as a 3 second fuse. The spoon basically set the fuse off and w.e it was set at is now what you were told, they still had a specific condition of needing to land bottom down to explode and these were mostly pop grenades not shrapnel intensive meaning these are just highly compact gun cotton ready to pop. they had a better detonation rate however they still didn't detonate at the way we see current grenades. France lead innovation accross the board in infantry and artillery tactics, however they neglected the Navy and instead focused heavily into newer techs again during the war, creating a turreted tank and adding more flexable weapon platforms to planes however it didnt really go anywhere. Almost trippling the range of artillery (They used a mixture of black powder and small bit of smokeless with stabilizing agents to create boosted shell ranges) and the age of the machinegun made the horrors of such changes in weapons tech really showed, thus the fields of death you see from WW1 casualty lists. The soldier in question is noted for combat and this only shows his heroic actions specifically. He was enguaged in fighting up and down the french lines in Alsace as the fighting was brutal. He fought tooth and nail threw some serioustly problematic things. Possessively they thought he was a leader cause of his small frame and tried to interrogate him, the ropes were tied properly to a old chair that was a bit rikkity, so when the person tried to scare him and got too close Roche headbut the guy and broke free snapping the chair with the forcefully forward motion. Attacking head on from there and with 1 well placed punch laid the guy out. Luckily he had the keys to the jail cells and let out his officer and 3 other men while taking 3 prisoners of there own. So as best explained they showcase that as the excape. I'm more or less betting that the fight in the cell had to be tougher then that or the person just got sunk like a clown. The problem is with military action at this time is if the captain or higher rank didnt see it happen it didnt get credited. Thus a lot of shit that people did gets no credit. Its wild though how much shit can go down

Yay another reaction! Once again I will do my best to clarify, give the background and correct chat if necessary :) You are right, Captain America is likely at least in part inspired by Albert Roche. Chasseurs - Its the term for "hunter" and in french army they were light infantry and cavalry - I would compare it to German Jägers. Bascially mainly skirmishers though thats kinda irrelevant in WW1. Chasseurs Alpins were elite french mountain infantry. The units still serve nowadays and are all based in the Alpes. Battle of the Aisne (which is located near the city of Reims about half way between Paris and Belgium) was actually one of the more important battles of WW1 as part of the Race to the Sea (a future video? :D ). Love that you get how useful it is for him to be small :3 Honestly the blue uniform is irrelevant, a minute in that mud and that uniform is dark grey from mud and dirt. France did in fact have these egg shaped modern style grenades. They also sometimes used these sort of "hairbrush" grenades that are just a bomb strapped to a stick but rarely. Pretty sure that the only ones who werent prioritizing this design were the germans since they used the "mace" looking ones which are wooden stick with a grenade on the tip - I am sure you know which ones I mean they are pretty well known. 8 second fuse on grenades was a thing in WW1 - the norm was 5.5-7 but you gotta remember that normally you throw it and it flies for some time. If its too fast it will blow up in the air and not after it lands. These are all nearly point for point exactly what happened as it happened. The soldiers surrendered since they thought much bigger force ambushed them - turns out it was just Albert :D Same with the solo-stand in Sudel. He ran from gun to gun of his fallen comerades and kept shooting. The germans saw unexpected resistance from multiple spots, thought the line is still strong and retreated to safety. I heard that he got inspired from a book about how native americans fought against the US but I dont have sources for that since it was just a throwaway comment by someone. Glad you understood how crazy it is to figure out the effort it must have taken to hold that line. The reason he was such a stamina monster is the fact he was probably really well built from the farmer life - that takes a lot of effort too. They werent perfectly on point with the capture - Albert regularly took recoinnaisance missions - this time he was captured alongside his lieutenant who was wounded. He broke out all on his own - captured 42 people and came back with the lieutenant on his back. The rescue happened during the second Battle of the Aisne. It indeed took him 6 hours to reach the captain but it also took four hours to get back to the line. (It takes longer to get there since you are moving towards the enemy and have to get through the barbed wire and find safe paths. They wrote exactly what it says - In an hour I shall be shot. I assure you I am innocent. Mind you he isnt a war hero yet - he didnt have good track record due to his short temper and the circumstances of why he was sent to the front. He got some credit for the rescue but only really got the recognition at the very end thanks to Foche. Yeah he captured 1180 people during the war, he also fought for the whole 4 years and lived through it. Not only did he get hit by a car, the car used to belong to one of the previous French presidents (not at the time it hit him) - he survived the crash and died in the hospital later. Nowadays his grave is in Vaucluse in Avignon where he was born and can be visited. Its surprisingly unassuming place considering how much of a French hero the guy is. O7 and looking for the next one :)

Albert Severin Roche was one of the most decorated soldiers in French history, even earning the highest honor in the French military for his actions, the Legion d'honneur. He also earned the Croix de Guerre, the Croix du combanttant volontaire, and the Medaille Militaire and eight other citations for his services. As for why he was never promoted, even during this time officers often came from rich families and first impressions often was how they viewed you for the rest of your military career, so Roche's temperamental nature during training when he ran off the base probably made the higher-ups decide that he was unfit to be anything higher than a private. Nonetheless, when General Ferdinand Foch, the Supreme Allied Commander of WWI, heard of his incredible deeds, he outright exclaimed, "He has done all of this, and he has no rank?!" upon seeing his papers listing him as a second class soldier. After the war and the celebrations ended, he would marry and have two children, Magali and Marie-Pierre, before becoming a firefighter for the city of Sorgues. Roche is a hero to the people of France, even if he isn't as well-known as other heroes of WWI.

3:55 "Chasseurs" means "Hunters". It is the denomination for light infantry trained for rapid action on the battlefield. 5:54 "Chasseurs Alpins" is the same thing, but specifically trained for mountain warfare (Alpins refers to the Alps mountains) 9:55 They didn't look exactly like that, but yes, France used a spoon grenade type in 1915, the "Grenade Modèle 1915 P1" (you can find images of them on google, it was kinda pear-shaped). However those were not timed grenades, they exploded on impact. They also had timed grenades, but not spoon variants AFAIK. The animation is clearly not perfect here. 12:30 Yeah, he one-man armied that german offensive, and made them flee ! Using guns from his fallen comrades all over the trench to make the germans think their artillery strike had been way less effective than it was. 18:10 Yeah, the animation doesn't do justice for the Lieutenant's rescue in no-man's-land... Roche crawled for 6 HOURS to reach that Lieutenant. Then it took him 4 more HOURS to bring the officer back to the french lines, crawling, stopping at times to avoid being discovered and shot, ... Also, it was not just gunfire to avoid, there was also artillery fire in the no-man's-land at the time... It certainly was NOT easy... 19:52 The french later is: "In one hour I will be shot by firing squad. But I assure you that I am innocent. Albert" 21:50 His total of captured enemies during the war was 1.180 prisonners. Most of them he captured by himself. Like for example the first blockhaus, he captured the survivors. He was all alone, but he managed to capture 8 germans, and brought them to the french lines as captives (he even had them carry their machine guns...). Given how succesfull the mission went, he apparently did similar missions on multiple occasions. As for the time he was captured and escaped? He returned back with 42 prisonners (plus the french captives he freed). 24:10 No, no. 2nd class is not Private 1st class. It is just Private, the most basic soldier rank. It is only at the end of the war that he was promoted to Private 1st class. The guy is definitely the most badass french soldier we had in the last century. Sadly his story is not well known at all. I knew about him before the Sabaton song (I even made them a suggestion to use him for a song, glad they did :) ), but most french people have never heard of him...

yeah, adrenalin under two minutes, and fine motor is not even close to normal, that is why disciplined martial artists usually wipe the floor with brawlers, they lack stamina and precision as well as the fact that muscle memory is a HUGE help. it is nain reason why military keep drilling things like gun handling and maneuvering... I have received order and I suddenly had my gun firing, with no memory of the steps between order and first shot, that means it was so highly drilled into my muscle memory that i did it with 0 mental input. 2nd class is private, private first class is a higher level.

If you want a good Yarnhub video that is based on an iconic Sabaton song/historic battle, I highly recommend looking up their video "Fighting the Germans 40 to 1" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bni2cnmZfdSmgJI). One thing I very much enjoyed about this specific video, is that they used dialogue spoken in the native languages on both sides of the conflict. Captain Raginis and his men held out for 3 days, the Battle of Wizna is sometimes referred to as the Polish Thermopylae.
