dragonic king That goes back to the Art Of War Quote (which sabaton actually used in the beginning of ‘The Price Of A Mile’), “Throw your soldiers into positions whence there is no escape and they will prefer death to flight, if they face death, there is nothing they may not achieve” Meaning if soldiers actually believe they will die they become encouraged to fight. It’s like playing with a lighter vs being in a burning building; Playing with a lighter you may not fear or care as much about actual fire, being in a burning building you will utilize every muscle fiber you and “fight or flight” mechanism you have to escape...
@blackassasin1756 жыл бұрын
dragonic king also it was pretty heroic because they were offered fair treatment, food and water (which they had no more of) by the Germans under the conditions that they surrender and the Major refused, they basically vowed to fight til they win or til they die despite having salvation as an option...

For those curious: The Pigeon was named Cher Ami (French for "Dear Friend") and suffered much more than a mere puncture wound or lost limb. He was shot down and the very last pigeon the group had. He was so gravely wounded that people actually had to work to save his life and this was his last time in the field. He suffered (if I recall correctly) a body shot, a lost eye, and his leg was hanging on by a tendon (so not totally lost, it had to be removed after he delivered the message). He eared multiple medals while alive and some postmortem (yes, animals can receive war medals). I have like, several books on strictly pigeons in times of warfare, wikipedia has nothing on me, lol. For those of you dont know the story behind this song is amazing. The Lost battalion was the 77th in WWI. They were part of a large joint offensive between U.S. and French Forces in the Argonne. During the Attack the 77th reached their designated position but did not know that the forces on both their left and right flank had been halted miles back. Fearing that losing the 77ths position would result in a devastating counter attack and prolong the war several years led to the men at HQ (the entirety of the 77th being at the front) to lie to the 77th and tell them that both flanks had been secured. By the time Major Whittlesey, commander of the 77th, had found out the truth, they had been cut off and surrounded by German troops. with no support(even being hit by their own artillery in an attempt by friendly forces to help them, only being stopped when a pigeon bearing the message "WE ARE ALONG THE ROAD PARALELL 276.4. OUR ARTILLERY IS DROPPING A BARRAGE DIRECTLY ON US. FOR HEAVENS SAKE STOP IT"). little Food. And only able to communicate by carrier pigeon, they held off almost ending counterattacks for 6 days. Out of 550 men. 197 were killed, and roughly 150 were missing or captured by the time reinforcements were able to make it to them (due to the sheer amount of troops the Germans were diverting from other sections of the line to push them back).

BACKSTORY: On October 2nd, 1918, The United States 77th Battalion comprised mainly of young men who grew up on the streets of New York, many impoverished and used to fighting for food and survival were sent into the Argonne forest to break the German lines as part of the "Hundred Days Offensive" also called the "Meuse-Argonne Offensive". For their part, the young men were told by General Robert Alexander - "It is again impressed upon every officer and man of this command that ground once captured must under no circumstances be given up in the absence of direct, positive, and formal orders to do so emanating from these headquarters. Troops occupying ground must be supported against counterattack and all gains held. It is a favorite trick of the Boche to spread confusion...by calling out "retire" or "fall back." If, in action, any such command is heard officers and men may be sure that it is given by the enemy. Whoever gives such a command is a traitor and it is the duty of any officer or man who is loyal to his country and who hears such an order given to shoot the offender upon the spot. "WE ARE NOT GOING BACK BUT FORWARD!"" - When the french that should have been supporting their flank were stopped, they were trapped in the middle of sighted-in territory, surrounded by the enemy, and told not to retreat upon pain of death. So they did not. They fought starvation, with very low supplies, and little relief in sight. Barbed wire covered an incredible amount of the forest, in rivers and streams, sometimes as tall as a man. The 77th fortified a hill they called the "pocket" and with nearly 500 men tried to hold fast and reestablish contact with their allies to no success. 2 carrier pigeons became the only means of communication until they were lost. Until October 8th they held, taking heavy casualties, but fighting so determined that the Germans could not focus on the counter-initiative that forced the French and American flanks back. Major Charles White Whittlesey received back one captured eighteen year old American with a message "the suffering of your wounded men can be heard over here in German lines, and we are appealing to your humane sentiments to stop....please treat (the messenger) as an honorable man. He is quite a soldier. We envy you." No response was given. They had their orders. Of the 554 soldiers of the Battalion, less than 200 were still whole to be rescued. They were relived of duty, promoted, treated, and/ or shipped home. Their efforts allowed the Allies to punch through the German lines, and succeed.

‘The Lost Battalion’ is the name given to nine companies of the United States’ 77th Division during the battle of the Argonne in 1918. Even though these 550-575 brave men were completely surrounded by the German Army and subjected to friendly artillery fire, they kept on fighting for a week until they were relieved. Of the over 500-plus soldiers who entered the Argonne Forest, only 194 walked out unscathed. The rest were killed, missing, captured, or wounded.

Nothing but respect for those men. They went through HELL. They could've surrendered. They could've laid their weapons down and gave up, got out of their situation. But you know what? They DIDN'T. These men hung in there and kept fighting until the bitter end. Not only that, but they were such a thorn in the enemy's side that help came in the form of an allied attack on a distracted force, which gave them just enough punch to break through the front line. These men, whether they fell in battle or passed after the war, will always live on in my mind as heroes. As they rightly deserve.

I would suggest that '...will always live on in my mind as heroes.' should read '...will always live on in our minds as heroes.' There are very few real heroes left in this world today, they are all being forgotten. I say, Thank You Sabaton for keeping their memories alive.

" I remember the Argonne, 1918. The sounds of that battle still haunt me to this day. Machinegun fire from enemy lines. The sickening sound of a bayonet tearing through human flesh. The soldier next to me firing his sidearm in desperation. All these sounds still echo in my mind, and as conducted by Death himself it all comes together as music. A rythm of death. This comment has been posted on the 11 of November, 2018, at 8:42 GMT, in honour of the ones who fell during The Great War. Let their souls rest in peace, no matter their nationality. They were all soldiers who fought for their country. It does not matter now from which side were they, for they lie in the ground side by side. Death claims all, no matter where you are coming from. May their souls forever be remembered, for they had shaped the world we live in today.

Pretty much the same in Europe, in fact it's getting lamer and lamer in France, they tend to insist on negative aspects of our history. Before, Louis XIV had over 100 pages of lessons in a Secondary School history book. Now it's four pages explaining how he got the Kingdom broke. How are children supposed to feel proud of our country history. I don't really know about USA, but I guess it's generally American-centered, that would be the reason why it doesn't go back to medieval times. PS: By the way, I only knew the name of the 30 years war before listening "A Lifetime of War" ;) Oh, and Europa Universalis 4 brought me to Sabaton.

My Grandfather fought in this battle. It took a long time for his involvement to be proven, the records are shabby, much lost in a fire. I am so thankful to Sabaton for this wonderful song, that always brings tears to my eyes.

maybe, my new video, which I am editing right now and will be released in a few hours, already has a comment on the division designer and historical accuracy and also a funny reference.
@Epicemissary8 жыл бұрын
What do you think about the fact they removed spies all together? That the AI is utter rubbish? That the division designer is stupidly simplified? And that you can't make planes take place in specific battles? And of course a whole bunch of other shit decisions by paradox.
@MilitaryHistoryVisualized8 жыл бұрын
well, the spy system was always quite lacking. I assume they will figure out a proper system and add it with a patch/dlc as they do with EU IV all the time. I played HOI 1 early on, you could basically declare war on everyone as Italy and the Allies didn't care... untitl it was patched later on. The AI is so far is fine, I am not really happy with the front system too, because 4 armies on the same front and they all will put divisions on the same spot and leave others, also the front should be able to be put up without an enemy border. The garrison mission also fails in preventing invasions. The air force, well, the losses are WAY TOO HIGH, about the battles, not enough experience, but the allocation system is extremely counter-intuitive. I think the direction is the correct one, I didn't like HOI3 at first but with Black Ice I loved it, the problem is HOI 4 is in the complete other direction, hence it feels way more off. But sometimes it felt like a little slaugtherfest similar to a War Thunder furball in arcade. Hence, I am not really happy, but it is way too early to tell.

It's harder to believe that in roughly 21 years from the end of ww1 that another world war would again plunge the world into darkness its also rather hard to believe that many of the same weapons from ww1 would be used again in ww2 a few great examples are the Browning Automatic Rifle originally created in 1918 would later return with only a improvement to the shipping iron sights and a increase of fire rate from 330 rounds per minute to 550 though the then termed 1918A2 had the option through selective fire for the slower rate of fire the BAR was one of the most feared weapons by the german army at the end of the first war because of its distinctive sound another three great examples are. The Springfield 1903 one of the greatest cases of American plagiarism that i can find used the Krieg bolt the same bolt system used by the Gewer 98 and later the Karabiner 98 Kurz. The colt 1911 a handgun that has repeatedly been upgraded throughout the years because of its .45 caliber rounds and ease of use and is still used even today over 2 centuries later many avid shooters and gunsmiths myself included prefer the colt 1911 over many handguns that fire a similar caliber because of its at least for me unparalleled accuracy even at distances up to 300 meters. The Lee-Enfield SMLE MK1 which was produced and adopted as the commonwealth rifle in 1895 and saw action across the globe up to 1960 through repeated upgrades finally being fazed out with the invention of the L1A1 even then the SMlE MK5 saw action as a sniper preferred weapon until 1990 and along with the Springfield 1903, and Colt 1911 are still some of the most sought after weapons for collectors.

Canadian Tanker 777 it was the nazis last ditch effort, time travel. But when they were about to send a battalion back to 1918, the allies attacked and only a few soldiers and armoured vehicles and a few of the allies managed to go back in time. This is the lost battalion the song is referencing, you really need to read up on your history books dude.
