@Christhorpe Junction the grounds were saturated with blood from those slain. I think most people would pick up something that would cause them to reflect. For some it may be the tomb of an unknown soldier, or perhaps a wall on which the deads names are written. For me it was at a war Memorial in Melbourne Australia. Down in what from memory they called " The Crypt". It had a whole heap of standards and flags from different regiments etc. And something down there was a very real presence. I don't think I even brought my camera to my eye while there. Up top I took heaps of photos but down there. It almost felt wrong to even consider it.

I read Sebastian Barry's novel A long, long way couple years ago. It's about a young Irish private in WW1. The book is sometimes very poetic and sometimes very naturalistic. It was the first time when I really was thinking about how much suffering those soldiers had to endure in the trenches. WW1 was the first I think that showed clearer than anything before that there's nothing heroic or glorious about war.

For many in Australia in highschool english there is a book in the required reading "A Fortunate Life" by A.B Facey. And while it covers so much more than his experience of war its definitely worth looking at for a glimpse of life in those times. From his time growing up, to war, to a scary encounter with a broody hen. Actually it's quite humorous to read but yeah. Definitely look it up if only to read about the bite to the nether regions in an outdoor dunny

We got a kinda similar book here, it's called "im Westen nichts neues" and shows the war from the perspective of a young German soldier (almost a kid) It showed the cruelty of the trenches and what the life on the front was like.

Sometimes I forget how serious their topic of choice is, with the hype anthemic songs and Sabaton being funny on stage and so on, but some of the songs are chilling and a quick reminder we're dealing with war, this one, price of a mile, cliffs of gallipoli and into the fire come to mind when I was like "oh shit" it's good to remember the outliers, the special people and stories, but it's just as important to remember that unfortunate boy who drowned in mud and died a pointless death, the unknown soldier. I love these songs from Sabaton. Thank you for this video, and this beautiful song.

The story of the men in the trenches of the First World War is so tragic. Just imagining it gives me chills. My friend and former roomate had a great grandfather who served with the French infantry as a machine gunner, and he found pictures of him online, in just about each of them with a different assistant gunner. It's very sad to think about.

Stories like these are what drive me to European battlefield archaeology. It is so important to respectfully and truthfully tell the stories of as many of the men as possible. My roomate's great grandfather served from 1914-1918, survived the entire war from it's outbreak to the signing of the treaty. I think he was stationed at Verdun, if I recall correctly- although it is likely that was only one of many places he saw during the war. They say you are never truly dead until people quit remembering you. These men do not deserve to die twice.

Totally get what Joakim says about the feeling at Verdun. I haven't been there myself but there are certain places or things that almost seem to tap into something like a memory that causes a flood of emotions. I get it watching WW2 era fighter planes. There's just something about the sound that chokes me up. It's almost like its pride touched with absolute sorrow if that makes any sense. A sense of dread is definitely not part of the experience. But a field such as Verdun would have, if you believe in it, so many energies attached to it. Almost like you're feeling how those men felt in what for many was their last moments. Definitely a sobering feeling.
@SabatonHistory5 жыл бұрын
It is absolutely sickening to be there. The energy of all the destruction, death and suffering is still very much present. It made me realise that, already feeling this way 100 years after the fact, having to live through the actual battle must have been terrible beyond any imagination.. I can recommend anyone to go there themselves. It's a feeling you just can't get anywhere else and it puts history and war in a whole new perspective.

I know Indy already covered this over at The Great War Channel, but for those who don't know. The American Civil War, especially from Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign to the fall of Petersburg saw trench warfare used effectively again and again by the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee until his army was pinned down at Petersburg and the resulting siege starved the Confederate Army to death. And Grant, despite attempts such as Emory Upton's column at The Mule Shoe of the battle of Spotsylvania, the battle of the Crater at Petersburg, and especially Cold Harbor, never found a way to effectively counter Trench Warfare to which, especially after Cold Harbor he stopped head on attacks that only wasted lives and instead changed his strategy to keep extending the siege line while trying to envelope Petersburg because he had the man power to do so whereas Lee had to stretch out his army further and further until there were practically no reserves left. It does make you wonder if perhaps one of the reasons why none of the European generals learned nothing from either the American Civil War nor the Russo-Japanese War is because well....to Britain, France, Germany....Russia, Japan, and The United States were to them knuckle dragging bumpkins who weren't worth studying.
@ethank50595 жыл бұрын
There were a lot of changes in technology between the 1860s and 1914 so most direct tactical lessons from the Civil War wouldn't have been very useful. Moltke the Elder (the competent Moltke) did actually study the US Civil War and the innovations he took away helped Prussia defeat France in the Franco-Prussian War. The big lesson that the European powers should have taken away was that total war escalates quickly and can kill millions. In 1914 most leaders had no idea how high the stakes were which lead to rash calculations. If they would have seen the damage from the US Civil War and internalized that they may have been more cautious before going to war in 1914.
